ANALYZING CHELSEA’s PRE-Season form

Hazard vs Real Madrid

Chelsea finished their preseason with a win over AS Roma in the US.  In the past couple of years we haven’t really enjoyed the best of preseasons but this was quite a good one apart from the blip vs Real Madrid where a certain Cristiano Ronaldo stole the show.
Chelsea’s preseason stats are as follows:
7 matches
3 trophies
20 goals scored
6 goals conceded
6 matches won
1 match lost
Might seem flattering since we played weaker sides in the far-east but Chelsea had good games vs AC and Inter Milan, looked solid at the back and ferocious going forward. The real test however was the Madrid game, a test this team should have passed. Chelsea conceded goals due to poor defensive errors and were run ragged for best part of the game. But we can put it down to the brilliance of CR too who is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world right now.
Preseason is not the barometer to judge a team chances but where do we stand after all this? Are we the contenders or mere pretenders? I think we need to look at quite a few things here before we reach a conclusion.
Chelsea are in the market for a striker and have been linked with Wayne Rooney ever since Jose’s arrival. Jose seems to like Rooney and has not hidden his desire to have him at Chelsea. Our current first team strikers are Lukaku, Ba and Torres.
Lukaku has had a brilliant loan spell at Brom and had a good preseason with Chelsea, a very Mourinho type striker, has strength, Strong aerial ability, Good dribbler and the determination Jose demands from his players. He is currently our No.1 striker without a shadow of the doubt.
But is he one to steer Chelsea to a league title? I think not. We need a striker who is excellent with the link up play and can score for fun. Cavani fell into that category but all our flirting (although De Laurentiis denied any bid from CFC) with the player came to nothing and he eventually signed for PSG, A BRILLIANT SIGNING we have missed out on.
Next in line are Luis Suarez and Wayne Rooney as potential targets. Suarez has temperamental issues and therefore Chelsea have thus far stood aloof and not considered him. Putting all eggs in one basket Chelsea have made 2 bids for Rooney and both have been rejected. United don’t want to sell, Not to a title rival atleast. But Rooney provides the answer to a lot of Chelsea’s problems. A proven goalscorer in the BPL, A player who is excellent in the linkup play (Ba’s problem), Brilliant at holding the ball, all in all a complete Center Forward who can play almost anywhere on the pitch. Gifted.
Signing Wayne Rooney might as well assure a strong title challenge for Chelsea, Yes City have a great squad, yes they have match winners but what they don’t have is the Mourinho factor. The special one is back and the special one has identified Wayne as the Batman for Chelsea. With around 20 days to go, this is going to be one of the biggest transfer sagas in England for sure.
Expecting some fireworks before the window ends! Can’t wait for the season to begin!
