What we learned? Jose’s first defeat in the League

WWL
Jose Mourinho suffered his first defeat in the league after the 2nd home coming. The game started with promise for Chelsea with Mata starting behind the debutant Samuel Eto’o. We created chances but couldn’t convert them which really came to haunt us later in the game.
Everton gave a good account of themselves as they managed to hang on to a lead they took at the stroke of half time thanks to Steven Naismith header in injury time of the first half.
Chelsea had the bulk of Chances but failed to put the ball in the back of the net. Chelsea had a total of 22 shots on goal, out of which only 6 were on target, compared to Everton’s 5 out of their 11.
Untitled
In the 2nd Half Chelsea really went for it. Jose brought in Oscar and Lampard in search for that elusive goal but Everton defended resolutely. Everton too had a couple of chances of their own in the 2nd half. The Baines free kick that kissed the post on its way out and Mirallas too came close. The game ended in disappointment for Chelsea as we slipped to 6th spot.
What we learned today?
You don’t take your chances? You Don’t Win.
Chelsea today paid a heavy price for not taking their chances. We can blame the manager and the team selection if we weren’t creating enough. But if we create and still we don’t manage to score I think it’s down to the players and their abilities.
Jose after the match pointed out:

“I don’t know if I have to say we didn’t deserve to lose, or if I should say we deserved to lose.
“We didn’t deserve it (to lose) because we were the best team, because we play the best football, because we dominate the whole game, because we had 21 shots, because we risk everything we could… In that sense it is fair to say we deserved to win the game.”
“But the other way, a team that has 21 shots, some of them easy shots and easy situations to score and we don’t score and we have a mistake in the last minute of the first half…
“Maybe with that I should say we deserve to lose.”

We for most parts dominated the game, but still didn’t take our chances. At the end of the day it’s about who scored more. Not about possession or who had more chances, a bitter reality.
Simply, It was one of those days really.
Samuel Eto’o needs time to fit in.
Eto’o looked far from match fit for most part of the game. He lacked pace and his finishing was pretty awful too. That chance when he was picked by Schurrle but a fine tackle from Barry denied the striker on his Chelsea debut would have been converted by a fully fit Eto’o.
Still he looked a trade up from Ba and Torres and linked up well with the midfield. We can hope he will get better with every passing game. If Chelsea is to have an exceptional season we’ll need better performances from our strikers.
Eto’o needs time, go easy on him people.
Ashley Cole was poor: Do we have cover?
Cole didn’t have a great game. Infact he was pretty awful today. Not the best left back in the league anymore? He had a nightmare today to put it nicely. Surely Bertrand needs to be tested since this is the position we are getting exposed quite badly.
Today wasn’t a good day at the office, certainly not one worth remembering. Chelsea need to give Ryan a chance just to take the air of invincibility away from Cole. No one should be a sure starter.
4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3 to 3-5-2: Jose went for it!
Chelsea had a Plan, once it didn’t work we switched to plan B. Chelsea introduced Oscar and Lampard for Mata and Schurrle in the 57th minute. When nothing changed in the next 12 minutes, Chelsea made their final substitution as Torres was thrown on for Ashley Cole.
Jose was courageous. Chelsea switched to a more of a 3-5-2 formation in order to get that equalizer. We went for it, Jose was courageous. I really liked it. Although it didn’t result in goals for us which is a real shame but the intent was there.
Mikel needs to be appreciated a bit more:
Always slated by the fans for breaking the tempo and slowing down play but today Mikel had a brilliant game. Today Mikel completed 97% passes in the first half and 57% of them were going forward. (EPL Statman)
Mikel: 97% passing accuracy, 35 passes in 41 touches, 2 interceptions, 2 tackles, 3/3 long balls and 3 aerial duels won. Not bad, Eh?
When Cole was taken off he dropped deep and shielded the defense remarkably well. He was my Chelsea MoTM today.
Just hope he starts more games in the Pivot, certainly in the big matches as he is an assuring factor giving license to the likes of Ramires to bomb forward.
Hope we get back to winning ways in Europe. Up The Chels!

    Nice analysis.keep it up.

  2. Imao, I think Mou. should keep quite a bit and try to work than to be talking every time he has the chance to think about the team. * People of experience don not talk* The team’s play today was awful. Even the Benitez that Chelsea fans hate that much would played a very fluid and a beautiful soccer with these array of talented youngsters at Chelsea’s disposal. In fact Chelsea played beautifully under Benitez than what I am seeing now. * Coming even casts off their shadows# We live to see.*# KTBFFH.

    • You are right bro. I miss the beautiful soccer we played under Benitez

    • Kevin Macaringue

Yeaaah, Benitez’s team played terrific football, which is why we were getting run over by sooooo many teams last season, which is why we were heavily dependent on Mata and Hazard to do something every game, and its the main reaosn behind our failure to do anything of note apart from win the Europa League. If you miss that disgusting footbal, run off to Napoli, because Jose Mourinho is Chelsea FC manager now, and its this team that he’ll lead to a glorious end-of-season. And even if he doesn’t, he’ll at least give it a real shot, and we will play a man’s game, as we clearly saw tonight. And if “people of experience don’t talk”, you might be surprised to find out that Ferguson is the most successful manager in history, as well as the foulest-mouthed one, so go watch some football before talking so much.
Only a plastic fan would doubt a proven winner AT HIS OWN CLUB after a couple of games. I’m a True Blue, and I say JOOOOSSSSEEEE MOOOUUURRRRIIINNNHHHOOO!!!!!

      • I would have love to reply you and make a few corrections to ur bias comment but It’s obvious ur very obstinate and has ur mind made up, so it will be a waste of breath. so my dear brother, perish in ur ignorance since you are so dumb to label anyone who speaks the truth and air his opinion plastic fan… we see u Mr. metallic fan… I missed the fluidity in our game also.

      • Ahmad Dundere

Of course kevin,we have’nt gone anywhere and some plastic fans are already judging him badly, wether they like it or not it is an established fact that mourinho is a born WINNER!!

  3. it appears that RB is more suitable manager than JM for the current crop of players Chelsea has. JM is advised to come up very quickly with a system that pays dividend before his “JM” second spell becomes a failure. To make Mata a scapegoat where he has to play deep is manager’s fault. Today’s performance was a disgrace. JM instead of using his skills and tactical ability, panicked which was detriment to today’s Chelsea performance!

we need not to blame anyone of this result.
Mou is just getting used to this players you knw, and as u’ve said concerning Benitez, I totally disagree with you. Let’s start castigating the big Mou. It’s too early for that.
      Okay!!

    • Kevin Macaringue

So if Eto’o and Schurrle find a way to miss multiple open goals, you blame the manager? Sometimes I think you people have never ever played football. In the 1st half we were slicing Everton open even as they kept super-tight at the back, If we’d put away only a quarter of our EASIEST chances, we’d have won this game. Everton locked Hazard and Mata down and they had no way into the game, so Eto’o and Schurrle were often left open enough to net simple goals, but they construed to miss them. Which tactic can stop that?
If you think Mourinho could change that, I’m sure you must blame him for both of those unstoppable Bayern Munich goals, or for Lukaku missing that penalty? Don’t be silly. At the end of the day, tactics don’t matter much if the players don’t perform. We’re a new team with a new manager and a new style of play, and so far, no team has downright outclassed us. These are little things in a game that need to be changed. If you wanted to see bad tactics, you should’ve been watching Real Madrid VS Villareal, then you’ll appreciate Mourinho’s. (No offence to Ancelotti, that teams has the most stubborn players!)

  4. king imitor

i can but say we did well bt luck was against us, chelsea tried all they could do to slot in the much needed goal bt it was all to no avail.
Andrea schurllre shouldn’t have started the second half in my opinion cos he look so dried up coming back from the international break.
No one is to blame for yesterday’s gameI.
Kudos to J.O Mikel for the great display he had in that game. I wish he will be given more time to play and make our midfield more solid for the opponent to penetrate.
Win or loss blues for life.

    • I agree J.O. Mikel was MOTm for me.

      • Mikel z what we nid in the games not Lampard. With Lampard the midfield z porous. Its high time Mou started pickng Van Ginkel as well

  5. I didn’t like what I saw at all. Mourinho’s decision to start with Eto’o was poor in my opinion. Goodison Park is a hostile ground and playing Everton there is always a difficult task,no matter who you are in the EPL. If he really wanted to save Torres for the UCL,then I think Ba should have been the obvious choice not only because he has EPL experience,he can deal with Distin and Jagielka with his poaching abilities in the air and strength.
Chelsea never looked like they played the 4-2-3-1 at all! It was more like a 4-1-4-1 or 4-1-3-2. Why? Ramires was more often than not in advanced positions, mainly down the right wing delivering crosses. Yes Chelsea played 4-3-3 with him on the right in midfield but that was in the second half when Lampard and Oscar was introduced.
The removal of Mata came as a suprise for me aswell. Schurrle made good runs but wasn’t in the game and Mourinho made the correct choice to remove him but Mata should have stayed and Oscar on. Eto’o should have gone off for Torres. There was absolutely no need to play two strikers because Chelsea already dominated possession and if he played the established trio behind Torres, better chances could have been created. Please don’t tell me about 21 chances created,a whole lot of those weren’t even threatening or clear cut so it was just a waste. Playing two strikers means you will basically do long balls and rely on crosses which was again unneccessary because we DOMINATED THE BALL IN MIDFIELD.
What I’m trying to say is that I feel Mourinho messed this one up. His decision making was below par and he knows it. You simply cannot allow players like Mirallas,Naismith and Barkley to have room to operate through the middle and wide. 4-1-4-1,they exploited the open flanks and hole in the middle.
All in all,it was a disorganised all round mess from Chelsea and I really feel we should have taken the three points.

    • Hey Mate, you seem to be the only one with courage here. Jose messed this one up, and it hurt pretty badly, Torres or even Ba should have started, and I tell you, we would have had a goal in the first half. Eto shoulda come in when we were winning the game already somewhere in the 70th Min, not start. Mata should have stayed on, and Eto should have gone off. I don’t know why Ba wasn’t included in this one, but I’m pretty sure he would have had a decent game. I hope Jose wakes up!

  6. Martin, Norway.

Mikel was outstanding. We should have won the game hands down hope we come back strongly next match.

  7. Ishola Benjamin Kunle

Mourinho is courageous but need to have maintain last year team and gradually through the season inject new players. Now he does not have his regular 11,pleasing everyone in the team may be his failure, for now the forward and midfield position is changed regularly which i feel may create confusion among players who do not have time to know their playmate well enough. Mr Jose must know chelsea 1st,11 for premier league and champions league and stick with them, then 2nd, 11 for f.a cup and capita one cup. Goodluck chelsea

The tactic of mou was really good. We create chance after chance, Chance after chance, we cannot score. We already play 4 matches in the league and so far non of our striker has score. Mou already play with all 3 strikers and non has score. Unbelievable!! How we are going to win a match if our strikers cannot score?? The midfield cannot always score to save Chelsea.

    • Kevin Macaringue

As good as Schurrle is at positioning himself to receive diagonal balls and leaving his full-backs trailing, he should start watching out for his first-team berth…Mourinho will get fed up with all of these ridiculous misses. Against United, Munich and Everton, he had several clear chances to put us firmly in the lead but he either skies them or sends them so far wide he looks like a magician. Eto’o was terrific but he also missed some pretty simple shots. Mikel too had a good game, but that one moment he couldn’t control the ball in the box was comical. Even the goal we conceded was played like a volleyball match, nobody could’ve reached the ball. How can Mourinho change that?? Not his fault!

  9. mikel was fantastic, andre was a disappoinment, mata very promising, many of d players weren’t good enough- up d blues…

  10. Everton deserved their win, they defended well, caused alot of problem for us and took their chances. Am not gonna blame anyone but the team needs to finish chances created, we wasted so many goal scoring opportunities.

  11. Where was Willian? He was the reason why i wanted to watch the game so much. Van Ginkel as well. Mou should start picking good players not Lampard coz he damages the whole picture of the game. Under Benitez we played beautiful soccer not what we are watching this seasoo. This is rags

  12. pretty analysis, mikel was my motm yesterday too and with a couple of matches am very sure eto’o is gonna be the best better than torres and ba. I don’t think schurle deserve a starter in the position where we have kdb Oscar Willian and Mata. Ur blues!

  13. Mulunda mabonga

We need not to win all matches but give the team time epl is ours

  14. AbdulWasiu

Let me start by saying that the team is still new and players have not gotten used to each other. The coach is also new, trying to test run players to determine who can play with who, who understand who better, and who can get the tricks of who. This is why we need to give both the team and manager some time to work out things for better performance.
Jose needs to continue with fisrt team of last season and gradually start integrating the new players. Mata, Hazard and Oscar (MAZARCAR) can break any defence in the world and Torres understand their tricks very well, am not saying that Eto’o should not start but in a difficult game like this at the beginning of the season, regular and familiar players should be given the nod.
Sidelining Mikel and much trust for Lampard is ruining our games. Lampard is great with no objection but age is already treating him badly. Van Ginken should have been allowed in while mikel sheild the defence. Is no more news that fans haul abuse on Mikel but he doesn’t deserve it. He played very well yetserday and should be appreciated.
All in all, let’s keep supporting the team during this transition and we are going to laugh best at the end.
    Blues for LIFE.

  15. To read some comment as the team is a new team and the coach is a new coach is utterly disgusting! Taking RB as an example, he was brought in half in the course of the season. Mind you, he had no preason, he had no time to know the players, but he was always pressured to deliver. And he did it by givig us the Europa League. Although not all his decisions were okay but Chelsea were a joy to watch. Eventhough we were conceding, we were also scoring sumptuous goals. Yet he was criticized every now and then. Let be Frank and call spade a spade, Mou. is stucked in the stone age. When the game is changing you have got to change as well.# If the team is new, why don’t you continue with last years team and gradually inject the new players to have a complete squad. If RB had this squad he would have done a wonderful job for CFC.

    • very correct brother.. I am so glad to know that we still have some reasonable cfc fan here not those mou fan boiz who act like they know do much about the game by calling everyone and anyone who try to criticize mou constructively a plastic fan… once again, I missed the fluidity under RB not this scrappy games .. whe boast of the best pack of AMF enough to scare any team in the world yet Mr mou is still trying to play physical.. why not let these lads play their slick game.. smh…

Eto’o is fit.. I like his game.. Only not lucky.

  18. Chelsea faithful are hypocrites under benitez, manu 0:1 chelsea, everton1:2 chelsea and under mourinho, manu 0:0 chelsea, everton1:0 chelses frankly, i prefer chelsea under benitez. You can kill me for all i care

    • I am with you Ken. Some CDC fans are hypocrite and think Mou is always right and is never wrong. If you give me one option I would tell point blank that I would like RB to be charge of this squad than Mou.

    • I am with you Ken. Some Cfc fans are hypocrite and think Mou is always right and is never wrong. If you give me one option I would tell point blank that I would like RB to be charge of this squad than Mou.

    • I have never been a fan of the home coming and i will not hesitate to criticize at any give opportunity. Who do we have on the bench last season? But Rafa was able to Manage this players to achieve his target. I will say this without iota of doubt that if mou was the manager last season we will not finish in the champion league spot cos he will come up with his theory of eggs and omelettes.

      • AbdulWasiu

I don’t know why some people are comparing Benitez and MOU just cos we lost to Everton. I can remember vividly well that Rafa did lose some matches and drew some in his first four games or have we forgotten Chelsea’s lost to the relegation threatened QPR and so on. Let’s flash back a bit to the Super Cup against Bayern, we all commended the Coach and the players even though we lost at end.
That by the way, football is a game wherein you win some and lose some and this what happened yesterday. Let’s continue supporting the Caoch and the team and stop criticism that are uncalled for. Blues till I die.

      • That’s absolutely it. Mou would have been giving flimsy excuses if he were to be in RB’s shoes last season.

” eto’o needs time” that’s exactly what we said about Torres. Why can’t we just buy a
Good young striker instead of a 32 year old who hasn’t played real football in 2 years.
I know mourinho is a genius, but sometimes it’s hard for me to understand why he does certain things…

    • Be real and say he is now behind the game. He should have taken a leave as well to charge his batteries.

  20. my fellow fans please we should lay the match to bed, we played good but dint make use of our chances as we should have, maybe we weren’t as determined as everton or maybe everton din’t have half their squad on international duty…..
I don’t feel bad on bit cos I know we are a work in progress.

The game: Great match, wrong approach by players. was it MOU’s fault for nonchalance & lack of precision before the goal post ? no is the ans. So CFc’s players; new or old will not blame the manager in future when they start spending more time on the bench. opportunity may come but once for some of em. Faults: I see a lack of tactics in finishing. On Saturday all who tried, where in a hurry. No composure.too bad. MUO vs RAF: for those of u who are making ridiculous comparisons, I think it is completely unacceptable. Besides their individual achievements, I think the season’s to early for such bickering. At least we lost four important games with Rafa from a lead in the games. ( miserable). Ashley Cole: yeah, he had a bad game.. players decline with age. Betrand must prove himself first on the training ground. Everton: Ewood park, difficult place to play. Really a resilient team. physical & focus they were, esp when they play a top side like Chelsea. that’s the more reason why these boys need to be 100% if anything good is gonna come to Stamford Bridge this season. Céch: Still on top of his game but he’s also prone to mistakes like the rest. He helped Everton in the buildup to the 18 yard box domination leading to the goal we conceded. Thanks to Ashley Cole’s porous dept. Cech nonchalantly threw the ball in front of him ( an unsafe pass) in which a mistake was capitalized right under his nose, instead of initiating a counter-attack probably with Ivanovic. Now that’s bygone … we need to be quite careful in our half. Mikel: you just can’t change perpetually ungrateful fans.. They happen to have what most teams don’t have in Epl. Mikel.. still a great player. I quite agree with those who see the vision to plant him predominantly in the midfield. Eto’o and the Future: He was just half fit for the startup.. but I think he did well; had an obvious hunger to score with a reasonable work rate for a half fit debutant. But I feel he should have been a sub for Torres. He’ll be good in the coming weeks. CFC’s will be in the front foot when we start converting half chances… Godbless you all folks.

It’s like u fans have forgotten the manager who introduced beautiful games;it’s not Rafa but my hero RDM!RDM’s the manager who created MAZARCAR!In my own opinion,i won’t blame lay blames on anyone but some players like Schurrle isn’t ready to start our games, everybody knows what the trio of MAZARCAR can do.As for Eto’o,he’ll surely deliver while Mikel is priceless and awesome in our midfield!

    • you pple side mikel only to forget dt he is always given credit wen he performes in loosing matches

  28. Calm down guys. Mou knows how to overcome this. A loss means nothing even though it makes everybody sad & disappointed.
About last match, I think Mou may make some mistakes:
    – He should start Torres instead of Etoo. Torres is rested within two-week international break. So, he is much fresher than Etoo.
    – Ramires should be rested as well. He just returned from US and maybe a bit tired. Van Ginkel is a better option at the pivot (his passing is much better than Ramires). I don’t know why Mou does not trust him.
    – Schurrle should be not substituted. At that time, we were dominating Everton and had obvious chances to score. Lampard was tired (after two matches for England). He is not really game changer. I don’t know why Mou trusted him unconditionally like that. We have a lot of wingers but Mou pushed Ramires for right winger (that ‘s questionable!). Why not considering using Keven De Bruyne or Willian (not even in the bench)?
    – David Luiz? This guy is hard to say. He can be great in attack but not so great in defense.
