Chelsea has Three strikers , and they have Zero goals.

Etoo-Torres-Ba-620x330As the title suggests, we have huge striking problems. Mourinho or no Mourinho, things havent changed ever since i have started following Chelsea FC. The only major exception was the great Drogba who toyed with defenders on his own as a Chelsea striker but there are more failure cases than in any other club. Crespo, Gudjohnsen, Shevchenko. You name it. And mind you these are world class finishers we are talking about, problem is with Chelsea , not the player itself. At present, we have a decent trio of strikers at our disposal but the baffling part is they have failed to score a single goal over the course of the 7 matches in the league this season. We are missing some very crucial goals and it might hurt us. Let us now analyze the potential and the problems of our three front-men.
Fernando Torres:

Fernando Torres has failed to make himself the number one striker at Chelsea after 3 years at the Club
Fernando Torres has failed to make himself the number one striker at Chelsea after 3 years at the Club

He is a crowd favorite, make no mistake about that and the most likely one to score than his other strike partners. With a huge 50 million price tag slapped on his back with his move from Liverpool, Torres has worked hard ever since to be the number one choice in the number 9 position for the Blues. Sadly, it hasn’t worked out yet with the Spaniard not being anywhere close to what he was during his time at Anfield and has struggled for goals specially in the Premier League. Having said that, i personally like his work ethic and desire to score as he has done all his career. Torres played a crucial part in Chelsea’s Europa League success last season and it looked like things might change for good but it has been an uphill struggle in the new season as well. So what is wrong with Torres? Not much in my opinion. As much as our midfield is brilliant, they don’t rely at all on getting through balls in for strikers to run into channels. That accounted for almost half of his goals at Liverpool . He was not that good in the air as Drogba was and hence struggled to cope with this new style of play he had to adapt to. But credit must be given to Fernando for sticking around and training harder and harder . I still rate him very highly and would pick him as first choice on any day any match. One thing is for sure, he can give you goals out of nowhere and is the most experienced forward we have as well. El Nino is number one.
Samuel Eto’o:
Jose and Eto'o love affair will not last much longer if things remain the same
Jose and Eto’o love affair will not last much longer if things remain the same

Having being drafted in the squad in the summer transfer window, Eto’o has so far failed to impress his critics upon his arrival. From being the best player in Africa to a two-time Champions League winner for Barcelona, Eto’o has seen it all and was once regarded as a goal scoring machine, But age has taken its toll on the mighty Striker that once was. Losing a yard or two and not the most killer eye in front of goal anymore , he has failed to score in the Premier League so far. He will get goals eventually that is for sure, but this is not the kind of investment Chelsea needs in a top class striker. We need a 25-30 goal a season striker and lets be honest Eto’o cannot match that at this stage of his career. Jose Mourinho is a big admirer of the Cameroon International’s credentials and Eto’o himself made it clear that a big reason for joining Chelsea was to work with Jose but i dont think this relationship would last much longer. Said it before and saying it again, Eto’o will not be offered a new contract unless things change drastically for him in front of Goal, which given the historical evidence is unlikely.. Number 2 Mr Eto’o. Good Luck.
Demba Ba:
Demba Ba's goal against Manchester United. His finest moment as a Blue.
Demba Ba’s goal against Manchester United. His finest moment as a Blue.

The Senegal Man was signed by Chelsea in January 2013 after some stunning displays for Newcastle United. Ba started his Chelsea career with a brace in his first game but it has all been down-hill from then on and he has been relegated to being our third choice striker and for the right reasons most probably. He is a more than decent striker with a great finishing touch, the goal against Manchester United in the FA Cup is some proof of that , but that sadly is not enough at Chelsea. You have to take your chances consistently as they come your way and there aren’t too many for Demba Ba now. His biggest problem is his slow pace on the ball and little or no dribbling ability. He can win the aerial battles but cannot go through on his own to score like the one and only Drogba. So more often than not , we see Ba isolated up the pitch and barely touching the ball at all for a big part of the match. Life has not been kind for Demba Ba at the Bridge and it is not going to change anytime soon. Take your chance as it comes your way son. No 3 but you deserve better.
Solution (if any) :
As much as our midfielders save the day for us with their goals , we need to realize that we are having world class strikers and we need to take advantage of that. Drogba was the best striker for Chelsea in the last decade and he was pure class but you have to admit he scored a considerable amount of goals from Lampard through balls as well when Chelsea’s tactics were not midfield dominated. Its much harder for the forwards now and they need to adapt to it quickly otherwise we wil have a striker turnover every transfer season which is not a positive sign for any team. Another thing is that we need to bring Lukaku back to our first team as quickly as possible because he is our new Drogba in my opinion and should get more and more games under his belt.
Drogba was the best striker Chelsea had in the last decade - By a mile.

  1. You can’t really call Gudjohnsen a failure before Drogba it was him and Hassilbank as our best strikers and he still played well troughout afterwards as well, he’s scored lots of important goals for us

Yes the exact sentiments. Gudjhonsen was a great striker until mourinho decided to deploy him in midfield, which he didnt do too badly either. Makes me wonder how long this writer has supported Chelsea football club by saying that.

  2. Torres is our main striker he has scored goals for us just not in the league this season. Eto’o looks more threatening than Ba, If Ba doesn’t score at all he will be gong in January. Eto’o won’t get a contract extention so next season I can see it being Lukaku and Torres rotating as our strikers.

  3. Rightly said we need LUKAKU in our first team hopefully next season he will be considered by jose as our first choice CF…………

For your information, Gudjonsen once scored 23 goals a season, when he was partnering Hasselbaink.

  5. Torres is the man !!

Look at torres’s shorts! He is horny lol

  7. I thing the problem in chelsea is not from the strikers, but from the midfield and defends.yes’ because

  8. I’d keep on saying this, until the team is fine tuned to create for the strikers. They’ll hardly score for fun, every Chelsea player wants to score from the defenders up to the striker. It shouldn’t be that way, Falcao, Cavani, Ibramovic all would have struggled for goals here too.

  9. It seems d writer of dis epistle does nt understand or appreciate eto’s contributn nd work-rate so far 4 chelsea.d problem here is dat chelsea’s type of play does nt help d striker 2 score.a striker wil always need d ball in front of goal 2 score but at chelsea our strikers reary get d chances 2 score.pls stop blamin eto’s’ performance.

  10. One tin i want 2 tel all chelsea supporters is dat all d best strikers in d world wuld struggle 2 score goals at chelsea bcos of our style of play.even ronaldo nd messi wuld struggle 2 score goals.chelsea’s style of play does nt create d chances dt help strikers 2 score on consistent basis.chelsea is stil playin “kick nd follow” football which is very outdated.nd mourihno is nt helpin matters by makin our flear nd creative players more defensive minded dan attackin.

    • Right Victor. Just have a look at the top scorers till now. Sturridge 6 in 7 matches and Lukaku 4 in 5 matches…

  11. When you call Hernan Crespo and Eidur Gudjohnsen Chelsea flops, you clearly show us you know nothing about football. And if you think its all the midfield’s fault, you should ask yourself why our strikers keep drifting into channels. As slow and technically limited as Ba might be, he at least holds his position, unlike Torres and Eto’o who keep drifitng out wide.

  12. The problem is not our striker but mostly come from our midfielder… do they pass the ball that will make our striker score the goal, not really… our striker has been as pawn for the midfield to keep the ball for them to score, see what happened to Ba when he assist to Oscar… Ba provide the ball to Oscar, did Oscar provide back the ball to Ba, not really… same happened to Torres and Eto, never get a good pass from midfield to score the ball… look what happened to Lukaku, he get ball from his midfield to score at WBA and Everton, but when he come back to Chelsea, no ball and no goal… enough saying, our midfield do not help our striker to score but instead score for themselves….
