What we learned: Chelsea vs Southampton

cahill_3044927

Chelsea recovered from an insanely early goal by Southampton to win 3-1. The error from Essien, making his first BPL start since May 2012 gifted an opportunity to Jay Rodriguez that put the Saints ahead as early as 13 seconds. Like I said earlier, Insanely early. But a very strong 2nd half showing by Chelsea granted us a very well deserved victory.

Southampton a team that boasted the best defense in the league got 3 put passed them, a massive achievement for the team and there could have been more really. The spirits went quite high before the kick off with Juan Mata finally starting a game as he was one of the four changes to the side with Torres, Hazard and Essien also back in the starting lineup.

After going a goal down the team didn’t panic or lose focus and in the 2nd Half the team really came out to win it. Jose after the match said:

“We knew that in the second half we could change things and I think the second-half performance was very good. We showed emotion and heart, and quality too.”

“I think we gave Southampton something in the second half they were not expecting and they couldn’t cope with it.”

When asked what his half-time team talk, Mourinho said: “I told them it’s easy to play when you’re winning, but now we have to show character.

“But we knew what to do. Mata was like a fake winger, playing inside all the time – and that gave them problems. Ramires and Lampard pressed them high, and it was a deserved result.”

Ramires was once again fantastic:

Ramires was clearly the MOTM today, the way he carried the team forward in the 2nd half was vital for changing the game in favor of Chelsea.

Tight defense following the gift goal:

Chelsea conceded really early but after that the defense didn’t allow even a single shot on target to Southampton this after the Saints tried to take the game to Chelsea but a rock solid defense did the job today, as both of our Center backs scored today. Captain John Terry celebrated his 400th BPL appearance in a fine way. After the match Terry said:

“It’s very significant for me. It’s a huge achievement to maintain it at a top club like I have,”

“I’m very proud of that. I’m thankful for the fans as well for sticking by me and the club as well. Hopefully there’s many more to come this season and maybe next.”

Torres threatens on the pitch:

Torres does seem like scoring when he is on the pitch. Even today he pulled out one fantastic save from Boruc with a fine header. Just needs to get his finishing right as everything else has fallen in place for the Chelsea no.9.

Work to do for Bison:

Essien has lacked first team football and it clearly showed today. Gifted a goal and then got booked, apart from that he was okay. It was his rustiness more than anything else as we call know the class he possesses. A few more games and he might be ready as for now clearly there is work to do.

Speaking about his performance today Jose said:

“Everybody makes a mistake,”

“Strikers they miss goals, goalkeepers they make mistakes, midfield players, they lose balls, especially when they try to play. And he tried to play. It was a back pass and they scored the goal.”

“He had a very normal performance. He played a part in the stability the team had in the first half, but one yellow card for 45 minutes is a long time.”

“I had to take one off and it was a very normal decision. Essien is Essien, he’s my man, he’s a Chelsea man and no problem, because other guys they make mistakes.”

2nd and very much In the title race:

Chelsea are now 4 points behind Arsenal and 2 points ahead of City. With Liverpool 4th after losing today to Hull the league table is starting to take shape. Chelsea are very much in the mix unlike last few seasons. With matches between Arsenal and City and Chelsea coming up this month we will very much come to know the contenders and the pretenders.

United languishing at the 8th spot 9 points behind Arsenal and 5 behind Chelsea is a very pretty sight i must admit!

But Jose played down the title talks as for now. he said.

“They must feel the responsibility to play for Chelsea,”

“Feeling that Chelsea cannot be in December – like it happened in a few seasons – completely out of the title race.”

“I can’t establish targets. I can’t say ‘now I want to win five consecutive matches, now I want to be top of the league.”

“One of the things these boys have to learn is to cope with the responsibility of being there. We cannot be 15 points behind by December, we have to be there.”

Good win. Mou must stop to be stubborn with Oscar. He is tired. mou, do you hear me?

  2. u must be drunk or somethng,u tok of ramires as motm? he was playing shit and being outmuscled,an you fail to mention the man who was puling the strings and gave us the victory juan mata? admin stop being ludicrous an be a analyst.

    • Mveh wtf is wrong with man? BPL gives him the award too! I bet you are one of the guys who watch the highlights only. Everyone knows Ramires was the man of the match. Stop being so bias. Mata was great too but Rami robbed the show

  3. Nice win! Couldn’t have asked for a better performance and result… but Mou, pls keep playing our best creative midfielder Juan, we all saw what he did today with d second goal!!! he outrightly changed the game! Blue is the sky!

  4. playing Juan Mata was one of the best things that happened yesterday. He created much problems for them, holding balls to cool their tempo, passes, dribbled. Mata should start against Arsenal and other vital matches. He should not be allowed to go. J Terry is fantastic, i know England FA will be kicking themselves for allowing him to retire. For me, he is up there with Vincent Company, he never get tired. Ba should be given a chance, he is far better than that Chelsea parrot at Everton Lukaku who scores cheap goals. Please where is Schurl? In all, Chelsea is great, great players in a great Club. Keep the blue flag flying.

Peeps that keeps calling us plastic fans bcos for advocating that Mata starts shd bite their tongues.
Mata kept delivering great passes and crosses.
His corner created a goalmouth scramble for the first goal.
His prefect delivery to JT’s head brought about the second.
Did u see dt volley esque pass to Hazard? Wish Hazard scored that goal, it would v bin a great highlight to watch.

    • I dont call plastic fan to nobody, but it sometimes feel like some of them support mata fc. I love mata but he has to do what his manager tells him in order to play, period. Some of them even attack legends as Super Frankie to defend Mata. Mata has to work hard and speak on the pitch and if he’s not willing to fight for an hard earned place in the team, then Chelsea is bigger than Mata or anybody else. I like some players more than others but I support the team that plays without condition. Since the blues are winning, and playing together as a team, Mou could play Schwarzer as n 10 that I couldnt care less 🙂

lets be realistic Ramires was clearly the MOTM he won so many tackles he was shielding that back 4 nicely he was working his socks of. i luv Mata but 4 me Ramires was clearly the motm.:-:-PPRINZ

  7. Vaakmeisster

What I learnt: Mata clearly showed his importance to Chelsea’s cause with his assist an all round play. He must start all games. Oscar may be dropped deep as this is almost where he plays in his national team

    • Cfc_obsessed

Ve u ever watch oscar play in national team? He never played in a position u pointed out (deep). Wot re u smokin? Oscar favourite move is short passes. He is not pirlo, modric, alonso, lampard. Oscar is an attackin midfielder. Just leave mazarca alone pls. I dont care u plays in the hole. All i knw is they re d best trio in the world

      • Vaakmeisster

@Cfc_Obsessed : Read man, read. I said “almost”. He plays CM for Brazil, not as advanced as he plays for Chelsea. And maybe you are smoking something for thinking his fave move is the short pass. Remember that glorious long ball to Hazard against Newcastle or so, would have been a goal if Hazard could sort himself out. He has all range of passing and has the vision to match. Mata is better in the hole as he has better Attacking instincts and a better through ball.Oscar is more of a playmaker, dictating tempo and spreading the ball everywhere. He may be more influential if he is played deep beside an enforcer. And you comparing Lampard with Pirlo & Alonso is laughable.

      • @ vaak lampard is a legend.he is the highest scoring midfielder in england.pirlo is great in orchestrating play in the midle of the park.hazard is not a mata or oscar kind of player, but is in the class of robben, ribery, very soon he will get 2 cr7 & messi class if he can add goals 2 his game.

  8. i learnt that
    1) essien should be used 2 sub mikel/rami when we are winning matches 2 restore his match fitnes.
    2) mata was great & oscar must rest b/4 fatigue spoils the good work he has done this season.
    3) hazard is a real driver.2 me his ability 2 attract 2 or more players 2 himself creates space 4 others.

  9. Good win. Mou should always rotate his squad frequently as Essien’s rustiness almost caused us the game. As for Lamps, he should be used sparingly n should mainly come on in the 2nd half as that’s when he’s more lethal….

    • Vaakmeisster

I agree with you Zyte. On your third point, Hazard maybe more dangerous if he can do what Messi used to do early in his career, destroy an opponents defence structure by attracting two, three defenders to himself.

  10. Ghananians are not commenting.

  11. The Game was hard to win but there’s one man who always makes victory look easy. ONLYONEMATA! Rami was great in the match because of his high work rate so he deserved to be given the MODM. Lets just keep winning…. Arsenal are not pretending and City are scoring for fun, we should be strong, we should be at d top by January. Ktbffh!

  12. For me,mata is still chelsea best creative player especially with the quality he shown yester day.i also want to suggest that we do not need any striker for now, because if you have strikers like terres, eto and ba and we can’t have the best out of them then nomatter the world class attacker that we may bring will still sufer them fate. We just have to balance the link between the defence/midfield and the attack

  13. I’m veri veri hapi dat we won…..Mata proves all haters wrong….arsenal laboured more than us b4 they got their 2-0 win….thumbs up our speedstar, ramirez……DID U SEE THAT 1 TIME MATA VOLLEY PASS ????? So fantastic

  14. Haaaaaaa……Ghanians in the house we need your comments!

  15. Vaibhav Kumble

The whole team was gr8. What ppl dont understand that when our team plays bad, we should learn to criticize in the right manner. Everyone is talking abt Mata. Did any1 praise Mourinho here?!! He changed his tactics at half time and we turned things around. Also for me Hazard and Terry were the outstanding performers. Terry was my MOTM.

    • Sanjay kumar

Hey u bull shit kumble you are back again with crap comments u plastic fan…………just go and tell your thoughts to kids they will listen you plasticcccc fan!!

  16. Nathaniel

MOURINHO HAS ALREADY DONE THAT FOR US….EVEN WITH THE MISTAKE HE LABELLED HIM AS PLAYING JUST AS MIKEL DOES

    What about playing two strikers?

  18. The way this forum is going, its actually turning chelseafc to matafc lot of u did not believe in mou yet when he win u celebrate mata well as much as I love mata to be with chelsea I still believe he is not playing very well this season and that means if he didn’t improve he will still find himself more on the bench no man ever rely on his previous success and move forward

  19. K DHEERAJ

What a great match, its very pleasure to win in such a way when we concede. 1.And firstly should praise JUAN MATA for his performance, he is not as good in 1st half but in second half the way he created the goal wooooow world class and also played vital role in 1st goal toooo.Everytime he plays for chelsea he gives his best. 2. Secondly john is the true leader. His display defensively and the way he scored the header, its beyond GK’s reach wooooow fantastic terry you are the legend forever.FA will still regret the way they treated terry and am sure they will know the value of a true leader and great legend now. 3.Ramires, he is fabulous. His energy and tackles are the one which played main role in shifting the game from defence to attack and vice-versa. 4.Credit should go to entire team for such great performance but with the above three lampard, torres, hazard and ivanovic were also great and delivered their best goods.Let’s not blame mikel essein too much for that goal it is his fault but after many months he started Pl game and we need to understand that and it is upto the team who should be responsible cummulatively when such thing happens and thats what our blue lions have done. 5. Last but very important one to notice lets not forget the main one and our special one JOSE MORINHO who changed the formation quickly and made the brilliant changes, only he can do that. And at the post-match press conference he told that players are knowing what he wants and adapting to his style thats what any coach wants. As many opine that his game may not be entertaining as every manager has unique style and at the end of the day winning matters a lot and thats what jose gives us at the end of the seaon. Finally BLUE IS THE COLOUR!

  20. There’s only one Juan Mataa.

  21. Mata is a genius and I’ll like to see Willian and Schurrle on Wednesday!

  22. Sanjay kumar

There is only one juan mata #10.

  23. Anonymous

joseh keep the good work on move.mata should be a regular player coz he make a lot of impact in the game and torres should retain his possession.

  24. Jt,Iva,cahil And Azp Not a bad Choice.

  25. Vaakmeisster

Another thing, playing two strikers maybe what Ba needs to shine. Ba is closer to Drogba than the rest of our strikers, maybe he doesn’t have same strength & ability to play alone up front like our legend, but he has the killer instincts and the ability to do the unexpected. With Torres intelligence and creativity, he may complement Ba’s killer instincts.

  26. @ vaak yeah hazard can be a great talent.u said comparing lamp & pirlo is laughable.i agree with u if u didnt mean that pirlo is better.pirlo is great as the best deep lying passer, but lamp is greater as the best scoring attacking or box 2 box midfielder.tank u.u fans are great also.

  27. Cfc_obsessed

@vaak. I hate arguing wit a kind of person like u. Oscar plays an advance position for brazil. He is just a kind of player that track back. By moving oscar to deep, u want to kill his attacking instinct like u did to mikel. Y re u so blind vaak dat lampard is one of d best midfielder in d world. Pirlo & alonso re class on their own, so as lampard. Old age may ve come but honestly am not gonna take anything away frm him. Bcos oscar play one long pass to hazard, so he can play in cm. I repeat, oscar style of play is simple short passes.
