Taking a closer look at Chelsea bound Graham Potter

Following the news of Thomas Tuchel’s sacking, Chelsea have identified their next manager. Graham Potter is close to becoming the new Chelsea Head Coach according to top sources. InfamousChelsea takes a look at what Chelsea might be getting.

Last night I saw Chelsea play one of the worst matches I’ve ever seen in over 10 years. I tweeted out that Abramovich would have fired him after that display, but I was not expecting Boehly and Clearlake to do the same. After all the reports of them getting along & backing him all summer by letting Marina Granovskaia, Lukaku go etc. it was a little surprising to see.

It’s clear there was a fundamental breakdown between Thomas Tuchel and the new hierarchy. Reports are mentioning how the new owners expected more from Tuchel in terms of communication on player transfers & other important aspects.

Those issues behind the scenes along with the performances vs Southampton, Leeds & Zagreb it was perfect storm for Todd Boehly to pull the trigger. It’s been suggested that Thomas Tuchels relationship with a lot of the players were also falling apart. The environment was becoming toxic enough to where he was close to losing the dressing room.

Despite everything that happened, I would like to use this platform to truly thank Thomas Tuchel for everything he did for Chelsea Football Club.

He inherited a difficult situation, won us the Champions League & got us through the sanctions. He truly was an icon through it all although it was short lived. I think Chelsea fans worldwide will look back on our time as truly special despite the flameout at the end.

Graham Potter time at Stamford Bridge?

The 47 year old English Coach is on the brink of a move to Chelsea where the club is going to relinquish his release clause of around £10m.

Potter comes from a strong playing background, with over 10 years of playing at a high level in English football at clubs like Birmingham, Stoke City, Southampton and West Brom.

His main managerial experience is with the club Östersunds FK from Sweden, then joining Swansea City & taking over Brighton shortly after.

The English manager has quickly risen up the ranks as one of the worlds most accredited managers because of the job he’s done with Brighton & Hove Albion.

Brighton & Hove Albion is off to a flying 4-1-1 start in the Premier League good enough for 4th.

  • Goal differential of +6 with 11G + 5A.
  • Brighton 4th in big chances (12)
  • Top 5 in xG and xG conceded

What you find with Potter is a coach that uses up the resources he has to his absolute maximum.

His well drilled side are off to a flying start, despite losing key players like Marc Cucurella to Chelsea and Bissouma to Tottenham. One of the most prominent things I find about Potter is the consistency in which his teams perform, even vs the big sides. Potter has an adaptability to him, but his main formation is similar to Tuchels in the 3-4-2-1.

His Brighton sides were very clean & confident on the ball, playing out of presses out the back efficiently etc. Brighton could also get really stingy in terms of staying organized and defensive, while not cracking too often.

They are really good at playing up to their opponents & doing whatever it takes to exploit weaknesses, while using their strengths to their best advantage. Fundamentally I think our football could look a lot the same in terms of principles, but it’ll be interesting to see if there’s more clear ideas and instructions given out.

Graham Potter is big on man management and believes in getting players motivated, and to understand them on a personal level. He earned himself a Masters at Leeds on Leadership & Emotional Intelligence. He’s going to have to manage big egos that could walk through the door at Chelsea, and certainly there must be some confidence from new ownership that he can get everyone to buy into the vision of this new era.

Infamous Expectations : Top 4 + Make out of group for deep UCL run

We’re only 3 points off 4th with that side being Brighton losing their top coach to us. While it’ll certainly likely be a scrap to the end we’re getting an experienced PL manager that is about to have quality resources.

I’m confident while looking at our Premier League schedule that we can have a good run domestically, the run-in isn’t congested with too many difficult fixtures.

Milan and Salzburg drew their fixture, which leaves Chelsea with a really good chance to advance out the group if we can start handling business. Graham Potter has an excellent opportunity in front of him, I’ll back him because I think he’s a good coach.

However his expectations are the same as Tuchels because that’s what I think he would of accomplished so I have to hold Potter and ownership to that standard.
