Match Report: Corinthians 1-0 Chelsea

report

Chelsea’s Club World Cup adventure came to a bitter end after the London side lost 1-0 to Corinthians in the final.  A solitary goal from Paolo Guerrero was all that separated the two sides.

First half

The match started in relatively quiet fashion with both teams sitting back and waiting for the other side to make a mistake. The first real chance came to Chelsea from a corner. A scrap in the box allowed Cahill to get a shot away but the ball was stopped by Cassio. It appeared to have crossed the line but goal-line technology was in use for the match and replays showed the call was correct. Corinthians had a couple of chances through Emerson and Paulinho, but couldn’t convert. Guerrero thought he had a penalty when he fell inside the box but it wasn’t given. Chelsea won a free-kick just outside the area but Luiz’s effort hit the wall. Moses had the best chance of the half when he curled a shot around a defender but Cassio made another good save. Lampard had a shot on target but it was straight at Cassio. 0-0 at half-time.

Second half

Chelsea started the second half on the front foot, and Lampard had another shot which was blocked. Mata managed to find Hazard with a through ball but Cassio pulled off another good save. After that, Cotinthians began to grow in confidence, dominating possession and creating chances. A Corinthians goal looked inevitable and it came from Guerrero. A scrap in the box ensured that the Corinthians hitman scored with a tap-in header in front of an empty goal. Benitez brought on Oscar for Moses in search of an equalizer. Chelsea probed patiently and Torres had a chance in the end of the half but couldn’t convert from 3 yards out, hitting the ‘keeper instead. Torres did score a goal in injury time but it was ruled out for offside. That was the last chance created. Chelsea were second best on the night.

why this chelsea another disapointment 2 day again. why chelseafc?

  3. When i saw lamps in the line up, i knew we gonna lose..secondly benitez made some late and silly subs he shld hv removed lamps

  4. Torres is back, said Benitez. unbelievable! I am sad because we lost but happy because I know now that Benitez and torres will not be there next year. Torres must be sacked in january: this player doesnt deserve £175,000 per week. My God, what a waste!

  5. Flop of the match torres. We better buy falcao in january.

  6. We played like the team before Lampard got injured. 4-2-3-1 changing into a 4-1-4-1. Lampard is my best player of all time but let’s face it,he doesn’t suit this formation or he just isn’t sharp enough anymore at the top level. If he stays (which I don’t have a problem with) he should play when the manager uses the 4-3-3 formation. He played it well against Juventus first leg at Stamford Bridge. Lampard wasn’t even in my opinion match fit to play the entire 90 minutes so I don’t understand why he didn’t get subbed off at the 60 minute mark. Paulinho had too much space to operate like Fernandinho had against us. All in all,I think Benitez made bad choices in his starting line up and subs.

Absolutely agree with you Adam. But…who will buy Torres in January? And what about his price now ? Maybe 5 M £?

i would give him for free… but their will be no takers because of his huge salary of 75000 per wee. no body will give him that. so he will stay here only.

Thanks for your indepth analysis. What l want to chip-in is that l observed that Abramovich is destoying the legacy he has painstakingly built for years due to his lack of patience and knowledge.
