Chelsea were humiliated at Old Trafford for the second time under Frank Lampard as the Blues fell to a 4-1 defeat. Despite missing countless chances, Chelsea found themselves four down before João Félix grabbed a late consolation goal. It was yet another display of toothless attack, leaky defence, in what has been the worst season in Premier League history for the Blues.
Kepa Arrizabalaga- 7/10
It could have been far more than four if it weren’t for Kepa today. The Spaniard made five saves, including a brilliant one to deny Christian Eriksen scoring from close range.
César Azpilicueta- 6/10
This looked to be a very difficult game for Azpilicueta when the teams were announced, but the Spaniard held his own for the most part. He made a brilliant recovery challenge to deny a certain goal for Anthony Martial. Did struggle at times to deal with the pace of United’s attack.
Trevoh Chalobah- 4/10
Some really terrible passing from Chalobah early in the game didn’t look like a good sign, twice giving the ball away in his own half. The young defender completed none of the five long balls he attempted.
Wesley Fofana- 2/10
An extremely naive tackle on Bruno Fernandes to give away a penalty, regardless of how little contact he actually made. Things got even worse for the Frenchman when he misplaced the simplest of passes to allow Marcus Rashford to make it 4-0 to United.
Lewis Hall- 7/10
Lewis Hall can feel absolutely robbed of at least two assists today. Twice the 18-year-old made brilliant runs down the wing, played a perfect ball into the box, only to see Chelsea’s forwards waste the chance. He played with an air of confidence in his game that was refreshing to see. Did allow Jadon Sancho to run off him far too easily for United’s second.
Conor Gallagher- 3/10
It seemed as though Gallagher had put on a pair of roller skates rather than boots today with the amount he found himself lying on the floor. Missed a big chance to put Chelsea level moments before United’s second when he dragged his shot wide. Almost cost his side a goal when he was dispossessed deep in his own half.
Enzo Fernández- 8/10
Looked like a diamond in a big pile of mud today. Some incredible cross-field passes and good defensively despite being on his own at times in midfield. Let down by his forwards who either mis-controlled the ball or wasted the chance. Should have had an assist when he played through Gallagher who shot wide.
Carney Chukwuemeka- 7/10
A promising performance from Chukwuemeka, who has been unfairly overlooked at times this season. Showed his ability to drive forward with the ball at his feet and was very tidy with his passing, completing 55 with a 93% accuracy.
Noni Madueke- 6/10
Some very good individual moments of skill and dribbling. Still much to be improved in his final product, but it’s fair to say that is a problem Chelsea’s entire squad is having.
Kai Havertz- 3/10
The German missed two chances to put Gallagher through on goal in the early stages. He failed to see the first and then overhit a simple pass for the second. Missed a massive headed chance from close range.
Mykhailo Mudryk- 3/10
Disaster day for Mudryk who was handed an opportunity to start. Missed an absolute sitter early in the game when Hall squared the ball to him with no one but the keeper to beat. The Ukrainian scuffed his shot, and it rolled far wide. Perhaps more concerning, however, was his touch, often being poor.
Subs
João Félix- 8/10
Brought on as a sub midway through the second half, Félix put out a statement to the Chelsea board that he deserves to be here next season. A direct run, combined with a brilliant finish from long range into the bottom corner capped a very strong substitute appearance.
Christian Pulisic- 6/10
Didn’t have much impact on the game in the time he was on the pitch, but good to see some passion from the American who will likely be leaving in the summer.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek- N/A
Hakim Ziyech- N/A
David Fofana- N/A
Frank Lampard- 4/10
Déjà vu for Frank Lampard at Old Trafford as Chelsea manager. Just as his first away game as manager for the Blues saw him concede four, his last away game has seen history repeat itself. In truth, Chelsea should have scored more, and it wasn’t a case of complete domination by United. Nonetheless, this is turning into a sad end for the Blues legend.
