What has happened to Malo Gusto? From a POTS contender to one of the biggest issues

Widely regarded as a capable deputy for injury-raven Reece James for most of last season, French Under-23 star, Malo Gusto has been a shadow of his usual self this season.

Loose passes, poor positioning and lengthy spells of loss of concentration in and out of possession has seen Gusto fast become a usual suspect in games this season.

Often lightweight in physical duels (aerial and ground duels) with a poor duel win rate of just 48.8% duel win rate and 35.3% aerial duel win rate over/90, Gusto has become a weak point opposition managers and players look to exploit.

In possession, Gusto appears to have also regressed with his cross accuracy presently set at 15.4%, a drastic drop from last season’s tally of 26.6% cross accuracy.

Gusto’s final balls this season has been atrocious and despite some very good moves often down Chelsea’s right, his poor decisions and execution often leaves onlookers frustrated.

Despite his rather frustrating performances regularly, Gusto’s technical ability remains evident, as seen in glimpses this season.

Whether inverting into midfield or playing as an auxiliary center back, Gusto’s energy and athleticism is a key strength of his but his immaturity comes to play way too often than it should for a player playing at Chelsea’s level, despite being only 21 years of age.

Malo Gusto has cost the team on multiple occasions (made an error that led to a goal tonight) both defensively and offensively this season.

if Chelsea are to finish the season in UCL spots, then Gusto has to put his errors behind him and finish the season strongly.
