Match Preview: Maresca hunts double over former side Leicester as Chelsea chase Champions League

Fresh off back-to-back victories in the Premier League and UEFA Conference League, Chelsea return to Stamford Bridge looking to make it three wins in a row against a struggling Leicester City side.

Enzo Maresca’s men seem to have rediscovered some momentum following a rough patch, but they’ll be wary of underestimating the Foxes, especially after their 2-0 defeat to Ipswich in December – a reminder that promoted sides can still spring a surprise.

Chelsea’s Strong Home Form

Chelsea have lost only twice at home in the Premier League this season (W7, D4), and with a chance to win four consecutive league games at Stamford Bridge for the first time since May, the Blues will be keen to continue their strong home form.

Maresca, facing his former club, will also take confidence from Chelsea’s recent dominance in this fixture, having gone unbeaten in the last four league H2Hs at home (W2, D2) – although Leicester have scored exactly one goal in each of those meetings.

Leicester’s Relegation Battle

Leicester City, under Ruud van Nistelrooy, are in desperate need of points as they sit five points adrift of safety following four consecutive league defeats.

Worryingly for the Foxes, they failed to score in all four of those losses while conceding at least twice in each.

Their 2-1 victory at Tottenham in January is a distant memory, and aside from that, their only other away league win this season came against bottom-placed Southampton (D2, L9).

However, history suggests they might at least find the net, having scored in their last six visits to Stamford Bridge (W1, D2, L3).

Key Battles & Tactical Approach

  • Chelsea’s attack vs Leicester’s leaky defense: The Foxes have conceded two or more goals in each of their last four league games, which could spell trouble against a Chelsea side that scored six goals in their last two matches.
  • Leicester’s scoring struggles: The visitors have failed to score in nine of their last 12 league outings, and breaking through Chelsea’s improving defense will be a major challenge.
  • Enzo Maresca vs his former club: The Chelsea manager will know Leicester’s strengths and weaknesses better than most, giving the Blues a potential tactical edge.

Players to Watch

  • Enzo Fernández (Chelsea): Scored in the reverse fixture (2-1 win) and has found the net in two of Chelsea’s last three games. However, he’s also been booked in three of his last four matches.
  • Jordan Ayew (Leicester): The Foxes’ key attacking threat, he scored in November’s H2H and three of his four league goals this season have come in second-half injury time—making him a potential late-game danger.

Potential Lineups:

Chelsea: 4-2-3-1 – Jorgensen; Gusto, Tosin, Colwill, Cucurella; Caicedo, Enzo; Neto, Palmer, Sancho; Nkunku

Leicester: 4-2-3-1 – Hermansen; Justin, Faes, Vestergaard, Kristiansen; Ndidi, Soumare; Buonanotte, El Khannouss, De Cordova-Reid; Vardy.

Prediction

With Chelsea finding form and Leicester struggling badly, this looks like a game the Blues should dominate.

The Foxes’ inability to score regularly combined with their poor away form suggests they will find it difficult to cause an upset.
