Player ratings: Chelsea enter another must win match for UCL qualification against travelling toffees

With Champions League qualification still very much in sight, Chelsea head into this Premier League clash with Everton buoyed by a dramatic 2-1 win over Fulham last time out.

The late turnaround kept the pressure firmly on their top-five rivals and proved once again that Enzo Maresca’s men have the grit and resolve needed for the run-in.

However, that euphoric moment did come at a cost Maresca’s passionate celebrations earned him his third yellow card of the season, and he will now serve a touchline ban during this encounter.

Chelsea – Grit, Growth, and Home Comforts

Chelsea currently sit two points behind fifth-placed Newcastle United and remain firmly in contention for a return to Europe’s top table.

Maresca’s side has grown in confidence and composure over the last two months, balancing their European and domestic responsibilities with increasing maturity.

Their recent performances, including a confident passage to the UEFA Europa Conference League semi-finals, reflect the positive trajectory under the Italian tactician.

At home, Chelsea have been especially ruthless against sides in the bottom half of the table.

They are unbeaten at Stamford Bridge in league games against teams starting the round 10th or below this season, collecting seven wins and two draws in such encounters. This should breed further confidence, especially considering the upcoming fixture congestion as the season enters its climax.

Rotation is expected given the importance of the upcoming European semi-final, but Chelsea’s squad depth has allowed them to rotate without significantly compromising quality.

Players like Noni Madueke, Cole Palmer, and Pedro Neto have stepped up in key moments, while Enzo Fernández continues to be a midfield orchestrator, adding both creativity and control to the engine room.

Everton – Resilience Tested Amid Injuries

Everton arrive in London off the back of a 2-0 defeat at home to Manchester City  a loss that halted their impressive 12-match run with just one defeat.

Despite their inconsistencies earlier in the season, David Moyes has shaped a hard-to-beat unit, one capable of grinding out results through structure and tenacity.

However, the absence of captain James Tarkowski, a defensive stalwart this season, poses a significant problem for the Toffees.

The centre-back, who has been an ever-present force in Moye’s low-block system, is set to miss out with a hamstring injury weakening an already thin defensive line against Chelsea’s dynamic attack.

Everton’s away record against Chelsea makes for grim reading. The Merseyside club is winless in their last 29 Premier League visits to Stamford Bridge, a run stretching all the way back to November 1994.

However, they will take encouragement from their recent 1-0 victory away at Nottingham Forest, a side also battling Chelsea for European places. That result shows they’re still capable of springing a surprise, even in hostile territory.

Tactical Outlook

Maresca’s Chelsea are likely to dominate possession, with Fernández and Moisés Caicedo pulling the strings from midfield.

Expect Chelsea to push their full-backs high to create overloads, with Madueke or Sancho operating in the half-spaces to exploit gaps in Everton’s defensive shape.

The absence of Tarkowski could be pivotal here especially when dealing with aerial threats or tracking the late runs of Palmer.

Everton, on the other hand, are expected to sit deep, relying on their rigid 4-4-2 shape to frustrate Chelsea.

Moyes will likely instruct his midfielders to remain compact, deny central passing lanes, and look to spring counterattacks through Dwight McNeil or Abdoulaye Doucouré.

The Toffees could also look to exploit set-pieces traditionally a strong point for Everton though the loss of Tarkowski will be felt at both ends of the pitch.

Key Battles

  • Pedro Neto vs. Everton’s Backline: Neto’s game-winning goal against Fulham showed his ability to deliver under pressure. He has a record of scoring against lower-half sides and will be a constant threat cutting inside from the wing.
  • Jordan Pickford vs. Chelsea’s Attack: No Premier League goalkeeper has kept more clean sheets against Chelsea than Pickford (7). His leadership and shot-stopping will be crucial if Everton are to get anything from this match.
  • Cole Palmer vs. Amadou Onana: Palmer’s ability to receive between the lines and manipulate space could be decisive, but he’ll have to contend with Gueye’s physicality and pressing.

Players to Watch

  • Chelsea – Cole Palmer: With 20+ goal contributions this season, Palmer has emerged as one of Chelsea’s most creative forces. His vision and ability to find space in tight areas could unlock a stubborn Everton defence.
  • Everton – Beto: If fit and starting, Beto’s aerial ability and hold-up play could offer Everton a rare out-ball, especially on the counter.

Potential Lineups:

Chelsea: 4-2-3-1 – Sanchez; James, Chalobah, Colwill, Cucurella; Enzo, Caicedo; Madueke, Palmer, Neto; Jackson

Everton: 4-2-3-1 – Pickford; O’Brien, Keane, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Gueye, Garner; Harrison, Doucoure, Ndiaye; Beto

Prediction

With Chelsea’s superior home form, the attacking depth at their disposal, and Everton missing a key leader in Tarkowski, this could be another three points for the Blues though they might have to work for it against Moye’s disciplined unit.
