Tosin proved why he is a worthy deputy to any centre back Chelsea buy this summer

Scoring the goal that helped the Blues defeat Nottingham Forest on final day of the league season, Colwill topped his brilliant showing in the hunt for UCL run-in.

Improving his physicality and box defending during the crucial run-in saw Colwill step up big when it mattered most.

A mix of his present form and potential sees Colwill stand a great chance to continuing as a regular starter come next season but a huge upgrade is needed on his partner.

For this game, Tosin was selected to partner the 22-year old but can the former City man be trusted in the long run?

Signed on a free from London rivals Fulham, Tosin has been a valuable addition to the team, in the absence of Thiago Silva, as he represents a new leader for the young pack. Since signing, the former City defender has played 37 competitive games for Chelsea, proving his availability.

At 27-years of age, Tosin is one of the most experienced players in the Chelsea dressing room.

Famously called ‘Uncle T’ by some of the players, it is quite evident that Tosin’s vocal style earned him the nickname and the respect of his young teammates.

Aside from his vocal style, Tosin’s key league experience having played in the premier league for 5 years after coming through the Manchester City academy makes him a key figure in an ‘inexperienced’ squad.

Strong aerial presence and impressive box defending further makes Tosin an interesting piece in a squad looking to challenge on all 4 fronts next season – League, FA Cup, Carabão and UCL.

Despite how impressive and how key a figure Tosin appears to be, football is a team sports and conflicting profiles in a football team is often the downfall of such teams.

Colwill being a guaranteed starter due to his age and present form means only one starter’s spot is left for his partner, a RCB.

A stopped and best suited to playing as the CCB, Colwill and Tosin are overlapping profiles and playing together means one has to sacrifice playing in their best position to accommodate the other which isn’t ideal.

Considering the Todd Boehly-led project of building a team of ‘young talented players’, Colwill’s potential is certain to be prioritized over Tosin’s experience, meaning the ex-Fulham man has to accept a sub-role or get sold.

However, Tosin remains a top professional and an important figure in the dressing. The board should keep him as a valuable squad member and go all out to secure the services of a top RCB as Champions league football returns to Stamford Bridge next season.
