£30M Gomez: Worth the money?

mario gomezChelsea’s top most priority in this summer is buying a world class striker who shows consistency. It has been reported that Chelsea are keen on the signature of Cavani from Napoli, but the question is, are there other good options available as well?
Mario Gomez was considered one of the best strikers in the world just a year ago, until Mandzukic signed for Bayern. Since then, Gomez has been a forgotten man at the Allianz Arena. Out of the 32 appearances he made, the German international has played only 4 complete games in the entire 12/13 season. His departure from the German club seems imminent, and rather than paying 60 million for Uruguayan International Edinson Cavani, Chelsea should rather opt to go for a much cheaper option. Gomez has the qualities that could dramatically improve Chelsea in several ways.
Let’s take a look at Mario’s stats from the past 3 seasons in Bundesliga :
Image
Bundesliga is undoubtedly one of the best leagues in the world at the moment, and it is only improving every year. Mario Gomez scored 28 goals in the season 10/11, playing 2442 minutes. That is almost one goal every game, which I deem is very good for a striker. More than anything, this just shows the consistency levels of the German International. He’s regarded as an almost complete striker because of his strength, ability to use either foot and partial link up play. There’s no hiding that Chelsea have always preferred such a striker. Even though their has been a change in system, such strikers never fail to deliver.
In the 11/12 season, Gomez bagged 26 goals and didn’t fail to perform. Again, it was almost one goal per game which shows that he maintained consistency brilliantly. Despite all his efforts, Bayern Munich still finished a position behind Champions Dortmund. It is known that Gomez has a natural knack for appearing in the right place at the right time, which in itself is a quality worth appreciating. As they say, being a good striker means being at the right place, at the right time. Gomez did this quote justice fantastically over the course of time.
The 12/13 season was a disappointing one in terms of minutes played and goals scored, but nevertheless, the German International scored 19 goals in 32 appearances, despite only playing the full 90 minutes on four occasions. This shows that he didn’t quite make the cut, but when he did play, he didn’t disappoint.
Why I would like to have him at Chelsea is because Bayern Munich use the same 4-2-3-1 formation as Chelsea, with Gomez far more likely to be found lurking in the box than over by the corner flag. Chelsea’s trio behind the striker are good enough to create at least 2 chances per game for a striker. His positioning and awareness makes him the perfect target man. He’s one of those strikers who would guarantee you at least 20+ goals every season, given that he is played regularly. His ability to score consistently is what Chelsea desperately need at the moment because we’ve struggled to find a regular goalscorer since Drogba left.
Though, I would like to add that Gomez’ injury woes are one of my major concerns. Gomez had a surgery in 2012, and one might fear that he might end up doing a Torres after his surgery.
At a price tag of 30 million, he is definitely one of those players Chelsea should consider, rather than paying 60 million for a striker who maybe gives you a little bit more.
Just before I finish my article, I’d like to show you the stats of Cavani over the past 3 seasons as well : Image
Cavani has scored 78 goals over the past three seasons, whilst Gomez has scored 65 within the same period. It’s inarguable that Gomez is highly prolific and takes his chances efficiently. In my opinion, Cavani is not over-rated, but I’d surely call him over-priced. There’s no doubting his qualities, and he might as well give an extra bit of edge when it comes to link up play and work rate, but in my opinion, what Chelsea need is someone who scores regularly. Mario Gomez does that, so does Cavani, but the difference in price is whopping.
So, do let me know what you guys think about Mario Gomez, Edison Cavani and their respective price tags.

He is my personal choice for the striker we bring in. I’ve been wanting to see him at Chelsea for quite some time. I really want to see him playing alongside Torres, and I’m always hoping to see positive news/rumors regarding Gomez going to Chelsea. He, with the ever-improving Torres, and Ba getting some decent playing time as well, could be a strikeforce that can be successfully rotated to challenge for trophies on all fronts.

Why you still want Torres in our squad? He is shit. We give him enough time. It’s time for him to go to the bench or go to the other club. Next season I want someone new to lead our attack. Yes he win us Europa trophy but don’t forget he cost us others trophies. The reason why we cannot defend our Champions League title is because he is flop and not a striker who is hungry for goals. I prefer someone who can be a goal machine. A club is better than player. We as fans deserve the best for out club not someone who cost us titles and make many managers to get sacked

Totally agree with you. I’d prefer Gomez to be our first choice striker, and Torres and Ba to rotate. Gomez would certainly be worth 30m, and I have no doubt that he’d prove it.

Its better to forget both. i’d like to see Romelu Lukaku regulary

  3. £30m for a player that had four starts last season I don’t think so, I know the suits at Chelsea are stupid but even they won’t fall for this.

Do his goals over the last 3 seasons with all competitions then you’ll see Gomez is better

I’ve done that. Not much of a difference. Maybe 20 goals. But would you pay 30m more for a player just because of that?

      • Anonymous

No I’m saying Gomez is better, cheaper, and has scored more goals in all competitions

  7. Gomez is gud. But i think its high time to make use of our loanie strikers i.e lukaku en pizon. I thnk they hve the potential to perform

    £ 30 m for a 28-years old player? Come on…

  10. This is the best reasoning I have head so far.True to your words Cavani is overpriced. Being the fact that we have a misfiring Torres,a potential Lukaku, and a brilliant Ba,we do not need to spend over 50m pounds on onother stiker who might suffer the same fate as Torres did.
