The Moroccan playmaker took everyone by surprise when he lashed a low left-footed strike from 20 yards out to beat Robert Sanchez.
It was a surprise goal from Thomas Tuchel’s side after they started the match sluggishly.
But the home team failed to build on their advantage and could not find a way to put the game out of Brighton’s reach.
Instead, the Seagulls battled their way back into the match and deservedly equalised through Adam Webster after 60 minutes.
The English defender found plenty of space from a corner to dispatch a header past Kepa Arrizabalaga.
League leaders Manchester City are now 12 points ahead of Chelsea and possess a game in hand.
Brighton are unbeaten in six games in all competitions and currently sit ninth on the table with 29 points from 21 matches.
Tuchel must get his players focused on the London derby against Tottenham at Stamford Bridge this Sunday, while Brighton travel to Leicester City.
