Captain, Leader and Legend

Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Chelsea v Queens Park Rangers - Stamford BridgeIf I was told to use words to describe John Terry I’d come up short. He’s been so immense and pivotal in Chelsea’s success that, you couldn’t mention Chelsea without mentioning John Terry in the same breathe. Born John George Terry(7th Dec 1980) he is currently Chelsea’s Captain and the longest serving Captain in the English Premier League. And it needs no reminding that he’s the most successful Captain in Chelsea’s history with 3 EPL titles(hoping he makes it 4 this season),4 FA cups, 2 Capital One cups, 1 Champions League and 1 Europa league trophy. Lest I forget he is the highest goal scoring defender in the history of Chelsea and the 2nd highest since the inception of the EPL(he needs only 4 more to equal David Unsworth’s tally of 38).

For a player who was a midfielder but switched to being a central defender due to lack of players in that position in Chelsea youth setup, he has owned that position ever since then. His influence on the senior team has been so immense that it has been mentioned in some quarters that he could be in line to take over the reins in the Stamford Bridge dugout sometime in the future. In fact I remember 2 seasons ago when Villas Boas had been sacked the rumours were rife that John Terry could be named Chelsea manager, we even saw him dishing instructions alongside Di Matteo. That’s how good he’s been.

It has not always been smooth sailing for John Terry as he’s been mired in controversies and questionable situations(every great man has), but it doesn’t take away the fact that he’s been one of Chelsea’s best players in a decade. Watching him this season play alongside Cahill has been a revelation, which makes me wonder what Benitez was thinking last season to have kept him out in favour of a Cahill and Luiz pairing. I’m scared to think what would have happened this season if Terry had been sold and Benitez remained. Good thing we got rid of Benitez instead and got Mourinho(can I get an amen).

Brazil beckons for England and for such Mundial only the best players would do. Right now in the EPL and the world John Terry is one of the best in his position so not to take him would be foolhardy. The defence needs his calm and experience. Recently we’ve heard both player and Hodgson say it won’t happen but who knows. There’s still time and this could be his last “hoorah” in the international scene but for Chelsea it’s obvious we still need him.”Wine improves with age” they say. Players like Nathan Ake, Nathaniel Chalobah and Kurt Zouma still have a lot to learn from him. One more contract for our club Captain, Leader and Legend.

  1. JT has surely earned it and in my opinion he’s much more a better player this season under JM cause of the trust and respect from and of the manager unlike Benitez who just didn’t think he was good enough?! I really want him to be at the worldcup this summer alongside Cahill in that defence for the 3Lions! I think his form will help England but then the issue is who captains the side??? JT or SG cause I feel that’s why he won’t play if he’s not made the Leader.

    • This is not the first time he’s been stripped of the Captain’s armband so I’m sure he’s used to it. I feel it would be more important to him representing his country with or without a band.
