Chelsea to rebuild squad in the summer

fernando-torres-chelseaThe Daily Mail has reported that Chelsea are set to rebuild their squad in the summer and process would include the selling of many players.

With a change of manager almost certain and big spending inevitable to bridge the gap between West London and Manchester, it’s already set to be a summer of upheaval at Chelsea.

But while Roman Abramovich gets out his cheque book again to sign new, world class players, others will have to make way.

With the restrictions of Financial Fair Play looming, and Champions League football not yet guaranteed, Chelsea will have to slash the wage bill and trim the fat on their bloated squad.

So who is likely to be waved off down the Fulham Road at the end of the campaign?

Frank Lampard

Age: 34 Appearances this season: 36 Joined Chelsea: 2001 Estimated value: £4m

On the verge of becoming Chelsea’s all-time record scorer, Lampard might run out of time to achieve it. The club denied again this week that they are in contract negotiations with the England star, to the great disappointment of fans, who have campaigned vocally for him to be given another year.

Unfortunately, the club believe he’s too long in the tooth to be worth the wages and a move, almost certainly to the United States or Asia, will signal a parting of the ways after 13 glorious years.

Chances of being sold: 9/10

Fernando Torres

Age: 28 Appearances this season: 48 Joined Chelsea: 2011 Estimated value: £25m

Disliked by most of the fans and a laughing stock to everyone else, it’s surely time for Chelsea to cut their losses and admit Fernando Torres was a waste of money.

With every miss of a glaring goal, another few thousand pounds are chiselled off his value, which stands at about half of the £50m Chelsea paid. They need to get rid sharpish and invest in someone who’s scored more than two goals since December.

Chances of being sold: 8/10

Florent Malouda

Age: 32 Appearances this season: 0 Joined Chelsea: 2007 Estimated value: £2m

Malouda, once so important to Chelsea, has been essentially exiled within his own club this season. He should have been on his way last summer, with plenty of interest from Brazil and also from Lyon, but his greedy wage demands worked against him.

Consequently, Chelsea excluded him from their Champions League squad, sent him to the reserves and a player who made 42 appearances last season has made none. Needs to swallow his pride and get on his way.

Chances of being sold: 10/10

Paulo Ferreira

Age: 34 Appearances this season: 5 Joined Chelsea: 2004 Estimated value: £500,000

A fine servant for Chelsea over the best part of a decade, but well down the pecking order now and, at 34, hardly the player the club will hang on to despite a wealth of experience. Is out of contract in the summer too, another reason why he’ll be out the door this summer.

Chances of being sold: 10/10

Marko Marin

Age: 23 Appearances this season: 13 Joined Chelsea 2012 Estimated value: £6m

Signed last summer as a hot prospect, it may be a little harsh to stick Marin on the transfer list given that first team opportunities have been very limited so far.

He’ll hope for more, but equally the abundance of talent at the club in his attacking midfield position mean it will be wise for the German to seek new pastures – or at least head out on loan.

Chances of being sold: 6/10

Yossi Benayoun

Age: 32 Appearances this season: 6 (for Chelsea) Joined Chelsea: 2010 Estimated value: £2m

A player more favoured by Benitez, his former boss at Liverpool, than he ever was by Roberto Di Matteo, Benayoun has actually started playing some regular football since damaging ligaments during his loan spell with West Ham.

However, Benitez is unlikely to be around to pick him next season and, with his contract expiring, Chelsea will most likely offload.

Chances of being sold: 7/10

Henrique Hilario

Age: 37 Appearances this season: 0 Joined Chelsea: 2006 Estimated value: £400,000

Third choice keeper who hasn’t featured this season. His contract is up and Chelsea will want him off the wage bill.

Chances of being sold: 9/10

Michael Essien

Age: 30 Appearances this season: 25 (for Real Madrid) Joined Chelsea: 2005 Estimated value: £14m

Essien still has two years to run on his Chelsea contract, but having spent the season appearing regularly for Real Madrid, you wonder if anyone at Stamford Bridge will remember he’s still on the books.

Given the plentiful alternatives in Chelsea’s midfield, they will be tempted to try and get whatever they can for the Ghanaian, either from Real or someone else.

Chances of being sold: 6/10

Jeffrey Bruma

Age: 21 Appearances this season: 9 (for Hamburg) Joined Chelsea: 2007 Estimated value: £3m

Tipped to become Chelsea’s regular centre-back in a few years, Bruma has benefited greatly from regular match experience in the Bundesliga with Hamburg.

There have been reports in the German press recently that HSV want to sign him permanently, and Chelsea may be tempted given they’re well accommodated in this part of the pitch. He’s certain to be loaned out again in any case.

Chances of being sold: 6/10

My thoughts :

Keep – Marin and Bruma

Sell – Torres, Essien, Hilario, Ferreira and Benayoun

Let go – Lampard.

Marin and Bruma are both very young and do have a future at Chelsea if they are given the chances, I believe Bruma could be a very good CB for Chelsea. Marin is a talented player, but hasn’t gotten the opprotunities.

Torres, Essien, Hilario, Ferreira and Benayoun have nothing left to offer Chelsea, IMO. They aren’t getting the chances, they’re getting old, they don’t have much to offer, so let’s get some money from them.

Lampard is a Chelsea legend and for me, it would only be fair to let Lampard pick his destination at contract’s end instead of us cashing in on him. It would be quite an insult to get money from him.

What do you think of this reported Summer clearout? Should Chelsea rebuild? What players should be sold and who should be kept?

  1. I think the rest are ok except marin, whom i feel has a lot to offer.

  2. indo blues

    out possibilities:

    torres 9/10
    malouda 10/10
    lampard 5/10
    marin 4/10
    essien 6/10
    benayoun 10/10
    hilario 10/10
    ferreira 7/10

    trust me

  3. I’d also say sell Malouda, Bennayun, Torres maybe Essien and Lampard should stay but Certainly not let go Marin and Jeffre Bruma they are still very young, we don’t want to let go another Stoch, Majtic, and Sturridge

    • Vaibhav Kumble

Benayoun, Hilario, Malouda and ferriera to go.. Keep the rest including Lamps… get back Bruyne, Bruma, Josh Mc, Lukaku and maybe Piazon … no need to spend any more millions pleasssseeee.. I wld only buy Isco cause I think he is a future world
      class footballer.

      • Anonymous

Still, think Isco is a world-class footballer?

leave bruma nd marin, let thd rest go.these 2 are still young talents and they’ve gt a bright future 2 live at chelsea

  5. No lampard & bruma….

  6. Anamarija

torres should go ( i’m a torres fan ) … but no one has ever seen that he hasn’t recovered from the injury in Liverpool. they let him go because a player that has been hurt isn’t as good as before and at chelsea they didn’t make a full checkout with him so he hasn’t recovered from then … so i think they should sell him because fake fans of chelsea don’t realise this and hate him for no reason… yes he doesn’t score that much and he playes the last 10-15min of the game so he doesn’t have that much chances but is a GOOD player. what about ba he is the so called ”best player” in chelsea but doesn’t score that much eather.. and you always talk about how torres misses his chances …but i didn’t see how you talked about mata missing his TWO shots…you just said poor mata for missing these two goals… what would you think if somebody would talk about you like that ? He/she is such a loser, look at him/her how she/he is doing this, doing that… so please if you support CHELSEA FC support the WHOLE team…NOT 8-10 players and hate one… I mean get a hold of yourselves and be a true chelsea supporter

Couldnt agree with you more. Some Chelsea fans are awful. I proudly admit to being one of the biggest Nando fans out there. Torres is a confidence player. He needs to know his team’s fans are behind him like all the Kopites were. Calm down, Torres’s miss against United wasnt the worst in history, and big players have missed easier shots than that. And I’d like to point out that, okay, Torres may not score every game, but he definitely does when it’s important. Ask Chelsea about Champions League this season, and both FA Cup and Europa this season. None would be possible without him. Plus I think he may even be more valuable in the end than Ba. Dont get me wrong, Ba’s a great striker, but Torres is more of a team player. You’ll see him back in defence clearing corners, or just providing a body to be in the way. Then he can run forward, give great assists, read plays, and occasionally when given the opportunity, finish. SUPPORT 100% OF YOUR PLAYERS CHELSEA “FANS”!!

Sorry, Champions league last season, not this season

THERE IS NO NEED FOR BUYS.WE HAVE ALL WE NEED ALREADY.JUST RECALL THE MAJORITY OF OUR LOANED OUT PLAYERS INTO THE SQUAD AND LET GO OF THOSE WHOSE CONTRACTS HAVE RUN OUT

  8. Hehe! Lampard leading the attack

  9. Lets lamps make history and lets marin, bruma,de bruyne hav more chances, the style of marin is just like messi, robben, ribery so why not atleast let him hav some play to develop his sheets just like de brune, bruma, lukaku did at there loan spell

  10. I would keep Marin add Isco and Benat recall Piazon and Lukaku along with Ba and sign no forward, Recall DeBruyne.

  11. I say sell both Ba and Torres. They don’t suit the system and pressing game. It’s for the best of both these players. Lampard’s situation is 50/50 but I think he might be on his way out. Marin,I don’t know hey. The rest can leave.

We own a massive amount of players who are currently on loan. Why not pick from that bunch to fill the gaps! Spending money on players like Falcao,Benat and Isco would just be a waste. I personally feel De Bruyne can play the Benat role if you look at his built and excellent passing range complimented by great vision. Chelsea should just find smaller flair energetic type of strikers like Suarez,Neymar and Aguëro to compliment the style of football we play. Ba and Torres are suffocating.

The defense is fine but should not sell Bruma. He’s a good prospect. The missing creativity in the double pivot and lack of proper strikers are the only concern for me in the squad.

    • Anonymous

I believe DeBruyne or Oscar could grow into the regista role in the pivot. Can we afford to wait? Benat would cost 20 and Isco would cost 30. While CFC don’t need Isco if he’s able to translate his game to the epl and continue to improve he could be in the conversation as the best in the world. Neymar, Suarez Aguello would cost 35 and up. Lukaku, Piazon, and Ba will thrive and grow with our young world class midfield

  12. Lampard should end his career just for what he has done for the club and Marin & Bruma should be given chances, they’re young

  13. shingirai samu

Give Bruma and Marin a chance maybe at loan to other clubs where they could have more game time.

  14. Where on earth can they buy all these good for nothing players at such inflated price, especially Torress and Lampard whose contract is over at the end of the season???

  15. I didn’t mean we should actually buy Neymar,Suarez or Aguëro. They are just examples of the type of strikers we need. Feruz fits the bill but he’s not ready yet.

  16. keep-bruma,marin recall-kevin de bruyne,thaibout courtious van anholt and mceachran include-islam feruz, sell-torres,essien,benayoun,ferreira,hillario,malouda and release-lampard,terry make-ashely cole (captain)and mikel asst

  17. copy – paste of daily mail article… Come on…

  18. Well i tink all of them should go except marin ad bruma i have watch bruma in chelsea he is strong ad calm bt in terms of area balls he needs 2 improve. Yes all of the needs 2 go ad dats include lampard. Lampard is distracted very distracted so here mcechran comes in if de all go we will have d chance 2 build a team with d like of, KAKUTA,OMEROU,KALAS,HUTCHISON(he is wat i called a perfect defended bt he is injury prone player)AANIHOLT,COUTOIS,LUKAKU,LUCAS PIAZON(he is starting every match 4 malaga cos of him am nw a fan of malaga he has so far 4 nw made almost 2-3 assist wow wat a player)BILL CLIFFORD(younger brother don’t no y d elder brother was release)AKE,FREUZ,DE BRUYNE(imagine he has been given a more advance role of a Striker dats hw sharp ad good he is i wonder y he was nt call back)THORGAN HAZARD(HE IS BRILLIANT 4 his team scoring goals 4 his team). So y d hell do we need a million player or a Striker, ad i say torres better Dan Ba,bt d only tin or player i will spend money on is ISCO dats all ad we will be d young squard ad dis time compete with arsenal ad ours will be better Dan ders hahaha bt will d board tel dat 2 Roman NO!!! Punks. So if Torres should leave Ba 2 must follow him in short Ba must go(no work rake at all just stay waits 4 balls ad den give it 2 d opposition ad a gift)lukaku is even better Dan him.

    So 2 my conclusion

Chelsea need new faces dats all cos am tired of all dis old faces am TIRED!!! bring my young players 4 mi hahahahahahaahha

I would prefer Chelsea keeping Torres because he has much more to give…How many Chelsea fans remember the day we bought Ramirez in fact he was one of the biggest flops in the premier league but know he is one of the best midfielders in the world. Also Marin has to be kept to avoid regretting selling him like we did to Sturridge.

  21. let go lampard what the fuck is your problem?? After all this year thats what you have for him to say you are an asshole

  22. emmanuel oyedoyin

i’ld say kip lampard and give marin the chance to become a good player..he’s gat the potential to play well and it wouldn’t be fair to let go of lampard….wat we did to drogba by letting him go wen he still has soo many tins to offer is wat we are still regretin at chelsea….imagine drogba playin along side hazard, mata and oscar wouldn’t he be among the top scorers….let lampard and marin still stay and work on a acquirin very sharp striker, isco or falcao would do on dat.

  23. Chantalle B

I would say get rid of all excluding Lamps, Torres, and Marin. If Torres leaves, he might as well hold the door for Ba. Ba, in the long run will not work for Chelsea. His playing style does not suit us. We cannot afford to have one player just waiting up front on the off chance someone passes him a ball. Plus, Ba, since moving to Chelsea, seems prone to missing open goals, and giving away the ball. Yes, he scored 2 on his debut, but since then he has failed to score consistently, just as Torres has. However, Torres has been able to be more versatile on the pitch, running back to defence, and playing in an almost midfield role. I know this sounds silly, but if Chelsea could fit him into the midfield instead, I think it would take the pressure off him being the lone striker. He can provide assists (which he has done quite a bit this season), and eventually feel confident enough to finish. 2 goals since December isnt the best record, but look at the importance of those 2 goals to Chelsea’s only hope of silverware this season.
We need to recall Lukaku, Piazon (unsure of him as he may benefit from some more time at Malaga) and Feruz. A goalkeeper is also a must as Petr Cech is getting older, and Ross Turnbull makes me want to cry.
The only money I would spend in the summer is on Neymar and some holding midfielders. We need players like Alonso on our squad. Not everyone can have fancy footwork.
I think our attack isnt its best, but defence is more pressing at this time,
