It has been a stellar start to the season for Chelsea. The Blues justly sit atop of their Premier League pile with 16 points from six games. Manager, Jose Mourinho, has done a wonderful job in the transfer market in the summer just gone. He addressed the striking shortage at the club brilliantly. Diego Costa and Loic Remy were both solid signings whilst Didier Drogba was just a bonus. As for Cesc Fabregas; what a piece of business that was. The midfielder is already pulling the strings in the centre of the park, relieving Eden Hazard, who has recently pledged himself to the club, of the burdens of pressure.
Mourinho has assembled a title winning side, which, right now, looks more than likely to happen. However, just because Mourinho has assembled a satisfactory squad, it by no means suggests that he will not be putting his hand in his pocket come January – he’ll have too if his squad is plagued by injury.
Below are some players that Mourinho may move for.
Sami Khedira – Real Madrid
How close Chelsea came to signing Khedira in the summer is unknown but all reports suggest that German international will be in blue shirt come 2015. The combative midfielder was one of Germany’s stand-out performers at the World Cup as well being a go-to player for Real Madrid. Reports suggest that Bundesliga betting favourites Bayern Munich, who were believed to be in the driving seat for Khedira’s signature, have ended their interest following their £8 million signing of fellow Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso. With Munich out of the race it is just Chelsea and Arsenal in contention. Khedira is in the final year of his contract and has his heart set on a move from the Santiago Bernabeu, meaning he will be allowed to talk to clubs in January – it is suggested that he has a gentleman’s agreement with Mourinho, his old boss. If Khedira does sign a contract in January then he won’t be a Chelsea player until June, but, Madrid may be willing to part with the midfielder for cash in January, rather than letting him go for diddly in the summer.
Anderson Tulisca – Benfica
The attacking midfielder only made the move to Europe from his native Brazil this summer, but his three goals in five games have not just put Benfica top of the Portuguese League, but also put Tulisca on the wanted list of every top-flight manager. Mourinho stated that if he could get a work permit then it would not be Portugal that Tulisca played, but England. Chelsea are just an extension of Brazil with Oscar, Willian, Ramires and Felipe Luis, Mourinho himself; although he is Portuguese, and Diego Costa; the Spanish/Brazilian hybrid. Tulisca definitely seems like a January style signing; sign him up and loan him back.
Ross Barkley – Everton
A lot of the papers are suggesting that Chelsea have moved ahead of Manchester City in the race for the Everton starlet. Barkley, who is currently out with injury, is one of the hottest properties in England right now. With both the FA and UEFA imposing quotas on the amount of home-grown players in a squad, buying British has definitely become the way forward. Sadly, these regulations have seen the price of British player soar; many suggest that Barkley won’t be available for less than £50 million.
Mourinho has a good working relationship with the Everton coach Roberto Martinez so he may be able to negotiate a more realistic price. It seems hugely unlikely that Chelsea makes a move in January, but, if the wheels do come off, Mourinho could quite readily pounce.
Currently we have Sallah and William hardly getting game time, we truly don’t need a new creative midfielder as we are wasting some.
