Christopher Nkunku gives cause for optimism after league debut goal

Unstable, unpredictable, and blunder-ridden are three words/terms that best describes Chelsea’s present form and performances.

A 2-1 loss today against Wolverhampton Wanderers after a morale boosting comeback win against Newcastle in midweek saw the hope of many Chelsea fans dashed after many had tipped that win on Tuesday to be a season re-defining moment.

Yes another loss despite a good performance.
Now, we take a look out at Christopher Nkunku’s second cameo after his long term knee injury.

Signing from Leipzig for a fee in the region of £54 million in January 2023 (officially joined in June 2023), 26-year old Christopher Nkunku already has his first official Chelsea goal in only his second substitute appearance.

Taking to the field in the place of Armando Broja on the 59th minute, Nkunku’s ball retention, intelligent runs and combination play all reminded Chelsea supporters of what has been missing since the start of the season.

Playing as a member of a reshuffled midfield 3 alongside Gallagher and Palmer when he first came on, Nkunku occupied the left half space in attack for Chelsea and could have registered his name on the scorer’s sheet earlier on in the game while it was still 1-0 to wolves, but for the intervention of Toti, who cleared the ball right on the goal-line.

17/17 completed passes and 3/3 accurate shots from a meagre 25 touches shows how insanely efficient Christopher Nkunku is in possession of the ball.

Considering how blunt and wasteful Chelsea’s attack has been ALL season long, Nkunku’s return to the fold seems to be the “in-house” solution to the woes of Chelsea’s attack.

A well taken consolation header to give the traveling blue supporters something to cheer about is a welcome sight for a team that has lacked “box presence” all season long and that is one more reason to be optimistically expectant as Chelsea fan.

With suspensions to both Palmer and Sterling, after both irresponsibly picked up their 5th yellow-cards of the season, Nkunku now seems destined to start against Crystal Palace in Chelsea’s next game at the bridge on the 27th of this month.
