Cole Palmer the shining light for Chelsea in a frustrating night against Bayern Munich

Chelsea kicked off their Champions League game with a big reality check As Bayern Munich were able to beat the Blues 3-1 at the Allianz Arena.

Goals from Kane and an own goal from our very own Trevoh Chalobah, coupled with three individual mistakes are what cost Chelsea the game.

But it was a landmark moment for Cole Palmer as he made his 100th appearance for the club and put in a performance that he can be proud of, making his first Champions League appearance for Chelsea.

Palmer found himself with more room to work with than he usually does playing against an elite team like Munich.

Much like against PSG, he used the bigger space to his advantage when he could.

When Chelsea needed someone to step up, it was unsurprisingly him.

2-0 down and probably unfairly, Palmer decided to take matters into his own hands and fire a shot into the top left hand corner of Manuel Neuer’s net.

Getting the Blues back in the game for the time being, and showing why he’s the man for the big occasion.

The Englishman was the main threat for his side all night. Making two key passes, creating one big chance and had an 89% pass accuracy as well.

Unfortunately for Cole, it was the other players that let him down.

Both Chalobah and Tosin didn’t look comfortable on the ball, and they were a big part as to why Bayern ended up scoring three goals.

When you’ve got a player as good as Palmer, it’s frustrating for fans to see individual mistakes setting the team up for failure.

We are starting to see the impact that the sporting directors’ incompetence squad building wide is having on our season.

Does this match end up 3-1 if Chelsea sign a defender instead of Jamie Gittens or Alejandro Garnacho?

There is only so much Enzo Maresca can do, he set the team up very well but individual mistakes let him and his star man down.

But the fact Palmer was used similarly to the game against PSG likely shows that Maresca will want to use him in a similar fashion in the Champions League this season, and against the bigger teams in the Premier League.

Chelsea need a reaction against Manchester United on Saturday.

Cole Palmer will look to cause more havoc at Old Trafford and get the club back to winning ways.
