This topic has been an endless debate, “Who had been better in 2012/13 season between Fernando Torres and Demba Ba.
To be honest, I’m more biased to Demba Ba. But I’ll try to make the comparison of both in 2012/13 season. *Goals per game is based on player’s started games.
In Premier League
Fernando Torres : Started 28 games, substituted 8 games, scored 8 goals. Goals per game : 0.3
Demba Ba : Started 19 games for Newcastle United, came as substitution 1 games, scored 13 goals. Started 11 games, came as substitution 3 games, scored 2 goals. Total started 30 games, came as substitution 4 games, scored 15 goals. Goals per game : 0.5
My Opinion :
It would be unfair if we only see Ba’s performances at Chelsea, since he needed time for adaptation. Ba is better than Torres in 2012/13 Premier League.
In Football Association Cup (FA Cup)
Fernando Torres : Started 2 games, came as substitution 3 games, scored 1 goal. Goals per game : 0.5
Demba Ba : Started 5 games, came as substitution 1 game, scored 4 goals. Goals per game : 0.8
My opinion :
Demba Ba had great days in FA Cup as he scored 4 goals in 5 games he started. We can’t say Torres was bad too, as he only started 2 games.
In Capital One Cup (League Cup)
Fernando Torres : started 3 games, came as substitution 1 game, scored 2 goals. Goals per game : 0.6
Demba Ba : (*For Newcastle United) Started 1 game, came as substitution 1 game, scored 0 goal
My Opinion :
Torres had been good with 2 goals in 3 games he started. Demba Ba couldn’t do a lot with Newcastle United
In Europa League
Fernando Torres : Started 9 games, came as substitution 0 game, scored 6 goals. Goals per game : 0.6
Demba Ba : Started 0 game, came as substitution 1 game, scored 0 game.
My opinion :
Fernando Torres deserved credits for his performances in EL, especially his goal in final. Demba Ba was cup tied
Another Competition
FIFA World Cup : Fernando Torres 2(0) 1 goal.
UEFA Champions League : Fernando Torres 5(1) 3 goals.
FA Community Shield : Fernando Torres 1(0) 1 goal.
Total (All competition)
Fernando Torres : 53 games started, substitution 15 games, scored 22 goals. Goals per game : 0.4
Demba Ba : 38 games started, substitution 7 games, 19 goals. Goals per game : 0.6
My opinion :
This all competition stats says it all who’s been better in 2012/13 season. Fernando Torres was not good enough for Chelsea.
Even Lukaku lad had better Goals per game than Torres with : 17 goals in 35 games.
Though, some of you are likely to keep saying “Torres was there to link up bla bla bla..” or “I’m a season ticket holder, and from what I’ve seen Torres is better than Demba Ba!”
Or some Mr. or Ms. Tactical master class would say, “Torres scored more goals than Demba Ba, Rooney, Welbeck, Aguero, Tevez, bla bla..” Of course he scored more, he played far more games than those, and played in upper position (Lone striker).
If we want to be better club, we have to compare our strikers to the decent strikers. Have a look to last season Premier League winner, Manchester United. What brought them the title and won the competition ? Robin Van Pussy. That’s the difference between Manchester United and Manchester City this season.
I’m not saying Demba Ba is better than Van Persie or any world-class striker. But Demba Ba has lower wage, and has only been half a season here, unlike Torres which has been 2 and half seasons here.
If we look back to Torres’s arrival at Chelsea, Torres only scored 1 goal in half season, whilst Demba Ba scored 2 goals in his debut.
And Torres has only scored 1 Premier League goal in 2013 ( second half of the season). Ba scored 2 goals in his adapting situation.
For some of you who think we can’t judge a player by his goals, yes you can’t judge a player by his goals unless he is a STRIKER.
Strikers are supposed to net the ball. It doesn’t matter if a striker has poor balance, poor dribbling, poor first touch as long as he keep scoring.
I’ve read some of you think Torres is a deep-lying forward. In 4-2-3-1 formation, there is never a deep-lying forward role. The up front is a striker, in other words, the player is on the field to get his name on score sheet.
For me, Ba is always a squad player. He is used for rotation. He is not world-class, but he is decent for a squad player, isn’t he?
Torres is never a squad player with his £175k per week. How can he being paid more than Mata? And only £10k a week to Hazard’s wage? He has been total waste (£50m + £17k per week) and you say you want to keep this player?
For me, it’s undoubtedly needed for Chelsea to sign a world-class striker this transfer window, if we want title competition.

As soon as I saw blah blah blah.. realised it was candy bar who wrote the article.. not bothered to read the whole article cause u dont have football knowledge. Simple as that.. Article IGNORED!!!
excellent review
But only one world class striker left in europe is cavani so we have to buy him
Lewandoski is also available and would be a perfect fit for us. We need to sell Torres and get in Lewa and we can play 4-4-2 with Lewa and Ba upfront.
Yes. Top 3 are Falcao, RvP, Cavani
