Does Cech get the praise he deserves?

With arguably, a terrible season defensive-wise, we still managed to concede the 2nd lowest amount of goals in the Premier League, and why is that? Two words. Petr Cech.
cech4Since his arrival at Chelsea in 2004, Cech has been a regular starter in the Chelsea squad making world-class saves and having some world-class games. Arguably, one of the best saves of his career came recently against Manchester United. Danny Welbeck managed to send a dipping cross into the box which reached the head of Hernandez, every United fan stood up to celebrate, even Hernandez was running away about to celebrate until Petr Cech stuck out a hand and made a world-class save. Cech was also pivotal to Chelsea’s success in the Champions League last year making some amazing saves including the penalties saved in the final of the Champions League.
A few facts/stats about Petr Cech:

  • Petr Cech started his football career at the age of 7. He started off playing as a striker, later changing his position to goalkeeper.
  • Petr Cech holds the record for the least amount of games it took to reach 100 clean sheets (In the Premier League). It took him only 180 games to get 100 clean sheets, an amazing accomplishment for any keeper in the world.
  • Petr Cech  holds a Czech professional league record of not conceding a goal in 903 competitive minutes.
  • Petr Cech also holds a club record at his former club Sparta Prague, having gone 928 minutes unbeaten in all competitions in 2001–02, when his unbeaten run in Czech league competition was combined with his performances in the UEFA Champions League.
  • During the 2004–05 season, Čech went 1,025 minutes without conceding a goal – a Premier League record, until it was surpassed by Van Der Sar in 2009.
  • Petr Cech has won the Golden Glove during the 2004-05 season and the 2009-10 season.
  • To this day, Petr Cech has managed to keep 142 clean sheets whilst playing for Chelsea.
  • Petr Cech has also received the individual award of Best Goalkeeper in the 2004-05, 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons of the UEFA Champions League.
  • Petr Cech was also named in the FIFPro and UEFA Champions League teams of the season in 2006.
  • He was voted into the all-star team of Euro 2004 after helping his country reach the semi-finals.
  • During the 2004-05 season, Petr Cech managed to keep 21 clean sheets in one Premier League season, a record in the Premier League.
  • Petr Cech only conceded 15 league goals in the 2004-05 season in the Premier League, another record.
  • In January 2006, Cech was named the IFFHS World’s Best Goalkeeper for 2005.
  • On 11 April 2007, Cech was awarded the Premier League Player of the Month award for the first time in his career in recognition of the eight successive league clean sheets he had kept. He also was the first goalkeeper to receive the award since Tim Flowers in 2000.
