Chelsea gifted former coach Frank Lampard a huge three points, losing 1-0 in a awful performance. Richarlison’s second half goal was enough to see Chelsea lose, thanks in part to some phenomenal keeping from Everton keeper Jordan Pickford. Chelsea’s season, which started so brightly, seems to be trickling towards a disappointing end.
Player Ratings:
Edouard Mendy- 6/10
There was nothing the Senegalese shot-stopper could do to prevent Richarlison’s tidy finish in the bottom corner. Mendy made some decent saves in the match, although he was fortunate that Everton’s finishing was poor, or he could’ve been picking the ball out of the net two or three more times.
César Azpilicueta- 4/10
Individual errors have plagued this Chelsea side all season, and the captain was guilty of making a huge one today. He was too slow on the ball, allowing Richarlison to steal it in the build-up to Everton’s opener. He could have had an equalising goal if not for an unbelievable Pickford save.
Thiago Silva- 5/10
Chelsea’s entire defence was at sea today after half-time. Silva, who so often marshals that defence brilliantly could not do it on this occasion. Everton should have scored more than the one they got, blazing two good chances over.
Antonio Rüdiger- 5/10
A below par performance from the Real Madrid bound centre back. A lazy tackle earned him a yellow card early in the first half, and Everton did not struggle to cut through the Chelsea defence time and time again.
Reece James- 5/10
A defender should not really have his performance judged on his offensive output, but in this Chelsea side there is a heavy reliance on the fullbacks to contribute in attack. James was sloppy going forward today, a lot of his crosses not reaching a Chelsea target.
Marcos Alonso- 5/10
Alonso will be disappointed with his work in the attacking third today. Often such a goal-threat for Chelsea, the Spaniard did not pose that same attacking menace today. Perhaps the recent links with a move to Barcelona were playing on his mind?
Jorginho- 6/10
Jorginho showed the positive side to his game today before going off at half time. Some fantastic passing, he dictated the tempo of the game. He also made some strong defensive tackles to break up Everton attacks.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek- 7/10
One of the only bright lights of the Chelsea side today, Loftus-Cheek looked to be in full flow with some of his dribbling runs. Reminiscent of Ruben before his disastrous ACL injury, he made three successful dribbles that drove the team forward. Defensively, he was caught out a few times, and Chelsea’s midfield was continually bypassed far too easily by Everton’s attack.
Mason Mount- 7/10
Mount looked like the only Chelsea player on the pitch who could be bothered for the game. His tenacity showed right to the final moments, with a last-gasp tackle on Dele Alli stopping the Blues going two down in stoppage time. He was desperately unlucky not to equalise for Chelsea with a shot that hit both posts.
Kai Havertz- 4/10
A really poor performance from Havertz, who looked more interested in having a fight with Everton’s Yerry Mina than actually playing football. The German posed no threat to the Everton goal today, with one free header that tamely bounced wide of the post being his best chance. Received a yellow card for stupidly pushing Mina over late in the game.
Timo Werner- 5/10 :
The German just could not get himself involved in the game today. Werner was dealt with easily by Everton’s defence. His dribbling before he was subbed off was very sloppy throughout.
Subs :
Mateo Kovačić- 5/10
Kovačić entered the fray at half-time after missing the last two weeks with a ligament injury. Chelsea conceded less than a minute after he came on, not necessarily his fault, but a sign that with Jorginho coming off, Chelsea lost control of the midfield completely. The Croatian struggled to make an impact on the game.
Hakim Ziyech- 6/10
Brought on to salvage the game for Chelsea, Ziyech, who may feel aggrieved that he has not started games recently, could not make the difference. He made a few mazy runs that looked good on the eye, but lacked the final product.
Christian Pulisic- 6/10
The American could not repeat his heroic late goal against West Ham last week. Another player who may wonder what he has to do to get in the starting eleven, Pulisic came on midway through the second half but struggled to find his footing in a game that Chelsea will want to forget.
Thomas Tuchel- 5/10
It seems half the Chelsea team already have one eye on their summer holiday, with the season drawing to a close. Tuchel will have to find a way to get his side back up and firing if they hope to have any chance of beating Liverpool in their upcoming FA Cup final game. The squad looked tired today, and perhaps Tuchel should have made more than one change to a Chelsea team that played just three days ago.
