Having a record of zero wins in 5 games played probably doesn’t justify how terrible Frank Lampard’s return to the helm at Stamford Bridge has been so far but defeat here against Brentford signifies a new low since the interim appointment of Frank Lampard.
Here are 3 lessons learnt from the game :
Bizarre lineups Lampard’s “Go-to tactics”;
Often speaking of intensity and players not doing the basics right during pre and post match conferences has been Frank’s “modus oparandi” since his return to Stamford Bridge but he’s got equally as much blame to shoulder for the disastrous form the Blues have shown so far.
Starting games with only one recognized attacker and playing players way out of position is fast becoming Frank’s favorite tactic and that bizarre tactic has Chelsea scoring just one goal in 5 games(A deflected Gallagher effort against Brighton).
Playing defence-minded players much higher up the park (Gallagher and Kanté) leaves such players clueless when in attacking positions and Chelsea bereft of attacking options when in possession.
Kanté remains a class act :
Class they say is permanent and there’s no other valid example of that statement than the enigmatic Frenchman, N’golo Kante.
Looking to get some needed minutes into his legs after a long injury lay-off, N’golo’s return to the team has seen him gradually regain his form with his usual all-round action on display tonight.
Playing in an unusual role amongst the attacking “three”, Kante’s industry in and out of possession was clearly evident as he ran non-stop all night long.
Wining 7 of 8 ground duels contested, 1 of 2 aerial duels, and 2 out of 3 tackles, Kante seemed back to his best in an all action display.
Lack of minutes for “Youngsters” persists :
Despite the season being all but over with no added incentive for Chelsea going into the final weeks of the league, it remains a huge surprise that Frank still hasn’t fully integrated the younger players fully into the team.
Despite a flurry of very young talented players at the club seeking for opportunities, the neglect being shown towards players like Carney Chukwuemeka, Noni Madueke and Datro Fofana is far from being an ideal situation.
With nothing but pride to play for till the end of the season, now seems the perfect time for the younger players to receive the sort of exposure that is needed for what is to come next season and later on in their career.
Attacking players like Datro, Noni and Carney who have barely made the team on matchdays will sure be cursing their luck as to how unlucky they are to see Frank opt for weird attacking options (Gallagher and Kante) rather than giving them a run in the team to showcase their immense talent.
Frank definitely needs to shake things up a bit now with results inclining that the Blues aren’t better off without the involvement of the much younger players as the experienced ones remain underwhelming.
Man of the Match – N’golo Kante: 8/10.
Next up for Chelsea is a clash against Arsenal at the Emirates stadium next week Wednesday.
