Chelsea were defeated 1-0 by Wolves in a match where the change of manager for the fourth time this season failed to have the desired impact.
Chelsea retrogresses in Frank’s first game back :
Frank Lampard’s first game back in charge didn’t go as planned as Chelsea fell to the hands of Wolves courtesy of a wonder strike from Matheus Nunes.
Lining up in a 4-3-3 shape, Frank deviated from the trusted back 3 system that has served Chelsea so well in recent history despite their recent poor form.
The players’ characteristics seem to be best suitable to the back 3 as it helped mend the visible cracks the team does harbor in and out of possession but Frank’s decision to revert to his favored 4-3-3 saw the team become disjointed with many stray passes and players looking lost on the pitch, unsure of what role they got assigned.
Defensively, Chelsea looked all over the place with loads of space to exploit behind the Blues’ backline time and time again whenever Wolves had the ball as there was little to no pressure on the ball from the Chelsea team.
The attack on the other hand saw Chelsea struggle to create any form of clear chances (0 big chances created) as none of the plethora of attacking options Frank has at his disposal seemed to grasp the opportunity to be the star man.
Despite Chelsea’s atrocious form under Potter, Chelsea did create enough chances to win games on various occasions and on most occasions only lost due to poor finishing.
On another day with a better opponent, Chelsea and Frank Lampard could’ve got a hiding with Wolves guilty of being really poor on the day with the Blues there for the taking.
Conor Gallagher offers what exactly?
Academy graduate Conor Gallagher has gotten enough minutes to prove his worth under 3 different managers this season but still remains a player that massively divides opinion with inconsistent performances.
Lining up as the RCM here in Frank’s 4-3-3 system, Gallagher was the furthest of all the midfielders on the pitch but his sloppiness on the ball, inability to influence play creatively and a tendency to be lose in his tackling all add up to Conor cutting a frustrating figure whenever he dons the Blues jersey of Chelsea.
Gallagher barely influenced proceedings in the attacking third, he had a 76% pass accuracy and 1/5 crosses completed. With the midfield packed with talents such as Mount and Carney who are presently missing out, it remains to be seen for how long more Gallagher remains a Chelsea player with rumuors of a massive summer clear-out incoming.
Sterling fails to be a positive influence :
A marquee signing to help boost Chelsea’s chances of a better attack, Raheem Sterling has contributed his fair bit to what has become a disappointing attack line.
A string of very disappointing outings coupled with niggling injuries have all contributed to a frustrating first season at Stamford Bridge for the former City player. Starting off as the left-wing here at Molineux, Sterling’s poor showings continued as the winger could barely keep possession nor keep track of the opposing full-back when defending in what was certainly one of his really poor showings since joining for 45 million pounds in June.
Completing 13 of his 20 passes, winning 2 of 7 ground duels and getting dispossessed 3 times all points to how much of a disappointing outing the England international had today at Molineux.
It must be said that he only played 10 minutes last game so he might not be fully fit but it still must be mentioned how bad of a performance it was for someone of his experience and quality.
Man of the Match – Reece James 7/10.
Next up for Chelsea is a trip Real Madrid on Wednesday in the Champions League.
