The moment Florentino Perez got up on stage to announce that Real Madrid had ‘mutually’ agreed with Jose Mourinho to terminate his contract, everyone knew where he was going back. There were the doubters who believed PSG or maybe even Monaco might be a suitable place for him to go. However, as his first interview for Chelsea TV goes, “I’m now one of you. “
Most of you reading this have heard the song “I’m coming home” by Diddy-Dirty Money and Skylar Grey. The song has long been visualized as the perfect outlet for feelings of people who have waited for far too long. Here’s a link to those who haven’t heard it yet.
What made me wonder is how the chorus perfectly portray’s Mourinho’s romance with Chelsea Football Club.
I’m coming home
I’m coming home
Tell the World I’m coming home
Let the rain wash away all the pain of yesterday
I know my kingdom awaits and they’ve forgiven my mistakes
I’m coming home, I’m coming home
Tell the World that I’m coming,
Let’s analyze the key lines, one by one.
Tell the world I’m coming home –
A series of media appearances by Jose Mourinho, declaring his love for a certain club in England, rocked the footballing nation. A horrifying year in the Spanish capital forced Mourinho into regretting his decision to sign a new contract. His own players began to despise him, the board of directors never looked him in the eye and the media plotted moves to make him look like Medusa’s half brother. He could not handle it as only a few words expressed his desire to move away to a place where he was loved. Back home, the Londoners sang their heart out to reunite the prodigal son and his mother. No matter what happens, in time he had to come back. In the same way that no one can keep a child away from his mother, nobody could stop Mourinho and his technicolor overcoat from returning back to Chelsea.
Let the rain wash away all the pain of yesterday –
The feeling of not being loved is one of the worst experiences people can go through. Mourinho’s time at Madrid started with him being beyond happy. However as time elapsed, mistakes were made. Whether it was the ego of the players or arrogance of the coaching staff, no one will ever know why Madrid endured such a disappointing season when they could have achieved a historic treble. Mourinho is not the type of person who will have his mistakes piled up at the back of his head. When he starts again, everything negative that has happened before will be forgotten. In his famous pre-match conference before Inter Milan faced Chelsea in the Champions League, a lot of excitement surrounded over how Stamford Bridge would welcome back her son. Jose Mourinho however, made it clear. “Before the match and after, I know everybody and I love them. But during the 90 minutes, I know nobody.” Mourinho had made it clear that his sour exit from the West London outfit would not be remembered.
I know my kingdom awaits and they’ve forgiven my mistakes
Since the departure of Mourinho, Chelsea have barely looked the same. Only Ancelotti’s double winning side could replicate the aesthetic appeal that radiated around Mourinho’s team, the kind that strikes fear into the enemy’s eyes when they have just walked onto the pitch. A number of managers came between his first arrival and his return. No one could be compared to the kind of presence he brought to the technical area. His passion was never to be seen again. Many would argue that Roberto Di Matteo was the best manager Abramovich could appoint, because he did what others failed to, and that was conquer Europe. But even he could only triumph in the status of ‘caretaker’ as he was not really given a chance in the role of permanent manager. Chelsea did their waiting, and 6 years of it. When he left, we knew he would be back. It just couldn’t end the way it did.
I’m coming home –
The best part about all this? He’s finally back. I’ve had my days of utter jubilation while supporting Chelsea. A 2-year-old me watched Dennis Wise score against AC Milan at the San Siro and a 15-year-old me saw Di Matteo, who assisted him, lift the European Cup. However, the feeling of actually seeing Chelsea announce his arrival cannot be compared. Distant sounds of trumpets can be heard, as the Bridge readies itself to roll out the red carpet. Almost every fan hopes that when the Premier League game-sheet is released, the first game is at home.
“In my heart, I had 2 passions, Inter and Chelsea. But Chelsea is more than anybody for me.” He might have gone to Madrid, but his heart never belonged there. He never felt like a part of their family. Merely a stranger who had arrived to do their work for them, and be acknowledged. He didn’t want that. He wanted to be respected but more importantly, he wanted to be loved. A young Mourinho at Porto said, “If I walk into training and don’t feel the same way as I come home to my wife, then I do not belong there” .
Slightly modifying a quote from J.K. Rowling’s famous character, Sirius Black – ”I’ve done my waiting. 6 years of it.”
Welcome home, Special One.

I fell in love with Chelsea thanks to Jose. When he left Chelsea in 2007, I was angry and extremely disappointed but I still love Chelsea since then. Thanks God, now he comes back. My dream comes true.
