Josh Acheampong’s repays Maresca’s trust with monster performance against Nottingham Forest

Chelsea are back from the international break, and they’re back with three valuable points after a 0-3 win over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Goals from Cobham graduates Josh Acheampong and Reece James as well as a strike from Pedro Neto was enough to get the Blues the win.

Ange Postecoglu was subsequently relieved of his duties as Nottingham Forest head coach after full time.

Someone who is thriving under pressure as of late though is Josh Acheampong.

The 19 year-old has been needed to be trusted upon increasingly more as the season has gone on.

Injuries have piled up at centre-back, with it now being known Benoit Badiashile is out until December.

But in the face of that trust, the Englishman has shown no fear and has been consistently providing top-quality performances this season.

Keeping the likes of Jean-Phillipe Mateta and Alexander Isak quiet to the point where they had barely any joy is no easy feat.

Those are two proven Premier League strikers, and he did the same today against the big and powerful Taiwo Awoniyi.

He started alongside Trevoh Chalobah today in his preferred position of the right-hand side of the centre-back partnership.

Josh made an impressive 4 interceptions, 3 clearances and he wasn’t dribbled past once.

On the ball, he was as classy as always. He was composed with a 92% pass accuracy, and not only that but his contribution in attack was massive in the second half as well.

Josh boasted a 73% pass accuracy in the Forest half, and of course getting his well deserved first Chelsea goal.

The header was extremely well taken, albeit from a beautiful cross in from Pedro Neto which perhaps made it harder to miss than score.

Enzo Maresca was seen celebrating in the stands and rightfully so.

Yes he’s seen his side take a 0-1 lead, but he also must’ve had a sense of pride seeing Josh score his first Blues goal.

This is a player that he’s seen grow from a player on the bench to make up the numbers, to one of his most reliable centre-backs right now.

Injuries have been unfortunate in the defence, but the rise of Josh has been a silver lining for the club in that sense.

You can see him growing game by game into the defender that a lot of fans hope he can be.

Yes, there are some little mistakes here and there but the fact he’s established himself as one of the more reliable defenders for us this season is very impressive.

Chelsea return to Champions League action in mid-week, as the blues take on Ajax at Stamford Bridge.

Will Maresca’s faith in Josh Acheampong lead him towards his first Champions League start?
