Marko Marin – Have Chelsea fans been too quick to judge him?

92719_heroaChelsea signed the 24-year-old German international from Werder Bremen last summer.  Since then, the  ‘German Messi’ has found it rather very hard to make the first team. Marko showed impressive qualities in the pre-season at America, wreaking havoc with defenses alongside Eden Hazard.
The start to the season was very tough for the German, sidelined with injuries, Marin could not impress Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo, and was usually seen on the bench, or playing with the U-21’s.
Often famous for judging players too quickly, Chelsea fans showed no real change in behaviour and were very quick to label Marin as ‘a waste of space.’
The only question that rises into my mind before talking about him is, ‘Have Chelsea fans been too quick to judge the little German?’
There are some things Chelsea fans need to know about Marin, before I talk any further :
1- Marin has never been an impressive goal-scorer. But while he lacks goals, he records plenty of assists.
Stat : Since breaking into the first team with Borussia Monchengladbach in 2007/08 (at the age of 18), Marin has never recorded fewer than 10 assists in a Bundesliga season.
2- He had been asked to exclusively play as an attacking midfielder in 2012, after years of operating as a winger, and has not been able to make the transition.
3- Marin possesses good one-on-one ability, good dribbling and good acceleration and agility.
4- He possesses an attacking sense with good short passing skills accompanied with vision for through balls.
Some Chelsea fans are not very familiar with Marko’s characteristics, weaknesses and strengths. Here’s what will help you guys out a little : Image
Marin had a terrible end to the season with Chelsea, and has now been loaned to Sevilla. Some Chelsea fans want him to be sold on permanent basis, rather than a loan move.
It surprises me because Chelsea fans have given up on a 24 year old who has massive potential. What surprises me even more is the fact that he hasn’t really played much this past season. There is no reason why Chelsea fans should judge him until they’ve really seen him disappoint the whole team on the pitch. Often sat on the bench, Marin has never had regular game time. It’s common that any player who doesn’t play regularly, loses his form. Same has been the case with Marin.
There’s a reason why he was dubbed as ‘The German Messi’ by most people.  Most Chelsea fans have only seen him being on the bench at the London club, and hence, making an early judgement. You can’t expect a player to play 1 game in 10 weeks and show what he’s worthy of. Di Matteo’s time at Chelsea was short-lived as he was sacked half way through the season. He started the pre-season with Marin, but after his injury, gave him no game time.
Chelsea then appointed Benitez as the new manager. A very controversial figure at the Bridge, Rafa Benitez didn’t give him any chance because he couldn’t have experimented anything. Chelsea fans hostility to Rafa was one reason why Marko Marin couldn’t prove him under Rafa because of the very very limited opportunities.
Marko is one of those players who’ve got undeserved stick and slating from Chelsea fans. Considering the potential he has, I think loaning him to Sevilla for a season was a very smart move. Sevilla have recently just sold Navas, which means Marin can break into the team on the right flank. I’m sure if he gets regular game time there, he’ll come good.
After one year, bringing him back to the club and giving him the time to prove his worth is something I’m in  favour of. I can’t see myself judging Marin based on just 5-6 games he’s got here. Until he succeeds to disappoint me after playing for Chelsea, he’ll always have my support. I believe he’s one of those players who can make the cut at Chelsea. He’s one of those wingers who’ve succeeded at Bundesliga, which in terms of tempo, is very similar to the Premier League. If he has done well in Germany, I believe he can do the very same in England as well.
A lot of Chelsea fans tend to trust in what Jose does, and I just hope they trust Jose with this one too. There’s a reason why Chelsea have loaned Marin, not sold him. You’ll know what the reason is in 2 years time.

  1. Vaibhav Kumble

Good decision to loan him.. with de bruyne coming back and buying Scurrle, attacking third has got crowded. Lets c how he does. He was our best player in pre season. Meaning better than Mata and Hazard.. so that tells us his quality. Hope he comes back stronger cause he will only improve Chelsea

    • Mata had no part in pre-season he was at the Olympics along with Oscar. Hazard, Marin, Lukaku where the attacking trio in pre-season so they where the best players with ease

  2. Marin is as crap as Torres. Why do you just bum off our worst players? Get over it, thankfully the club see how bad Marin is and have loaned him. Obviously you know better than our club, right?

  3. olaibi lazarus

mako marin is a good player and i like him so much

  4. I would like to comment an oveshigrt in the notion that West Coast-East Coast will be solely connected by the panama canal. What about the Trans-Canadian Railroad? Unless Canada becomes Xenophobic towards Americans, there is still that route for trans-continental travel. Its understood that the general point that the decline of the highway system and the airline industry would limit the phenomenon of cross country travel for the masses, however not quite to the point of solely by the Panama Canal. One possibility exists of Chelnoki shipping goods between the coasts via the Trans-Canadadian RR.
