Once again we look back at this summer’s transfer window and analyze some few things we learned from a hectic summer. One of the main topics surrounding Chelsea in the transfer window was the future of star duo, Brazilian David Luiz, who is thought to be a future captain after Terry and Spanish Maestro, Juan Mata. The two players were linked to a move towards La Liga as Barcelona desperately needed a Center Back fitting of their famed Tiki-Taka and Juan Mata was also wanted by the Blaugrana and his youth team Real Madrid.
One of the main reason they were linked away from Chelsea is because of thoughts and speculations in the media that Jose Mourinho doesn’t like the playing style of both players to fit into his favored formation of counter attacking football. David Luiz was thought to be to reckless and careless in a way he takes care of his defensive duties, favoring instead to drive forward and attack. Juan Mata, two time consecutive player of the year for club was said not good defensively and lacks the pace and physical aspect needed to combat opposition players.
But, Jose Mourinho insisted a lot of times during interviews that both players are key to his Chelsea side and that he will look to improve both players in his own image. What Jose liked about Luiz is his instinctive ability to turn defense into attack by delivering a deadly cross for strikers and creating chances. And one of the main aspects Mourinho wants to improve at Chelsea is the transition from defense to attack which he sees as a key aspect of football for every team that wants to win.
When asked about Juan Mata, he claimed that he wants to turn him into a diminutive right sided winger as he did previously with Joe Cole in his first spell. The Spaniard excelled in his favored No. 10 role at Stamford Bridge for much of his time here as he finds space behind strikers to deliver beautiful through balls and create opportunities. But, Jose Mourinho has so far favored Oscar for that position as he drives into the box more to help the striker and also drops deeper to help in defense and mark opposition players.
Despite such kind of uncertainties, the Special One proved his exceptional man management skills by blocking all transfer offers we received for both players especially Man Utd wanting the two players in exchange for Wayne Rooney’s transfer which didn’t materialize at the end. PSG tracked Mata for the last few hours of the transfer window and the player him self insisting he always wanted to remain at Chelsea despite Willian completing a move to Chelsea shows the confidence Jose instilled on his players back at Cobham.
David Luiz also spoke for the first time publicly about his rumored switch to Barca which he claimed turned down the chance to remain at Chelsea were he is valued by the coach and adored by the Chelsea faithful supporters around the world. Both players, thanks to Jose’s masterful planning, will remain at Stamford Bridge and there is a huge belief Chelsea are about to open contract renewal talks with Juan Mata with increased wages and long term contract.
