CHELSEA FC SQUAD NEWS: David Luiz, recovering from a knee injury will play no part in Tuesday’s game joining Marco van Ginkel, who is recuperating from his cruciate ligament tear, on the sidelines. REFEREE: Stéphane Lannoy (France).

TEAM STANDINGS: Chelsea sit atop group E with 9 points, followed by Schalke with 6 and Basel with 5. Steaua are bottom of the group with just 2 points after 4 matchdays.

THOUGHTS FROM THE ENEMY: Basel manager Murat Yakin has reiterated the fact that his team would like to cause another upset & hopes to qualify for the knock-out stages.

“We would like to stay in the Champions League over the winter. We want to achieve our first home win here. It was nice after the win that we achieved in London. I don’t like to look back. We’re focused now on the match tomorrow. We have to be clever and smart and we want to show our spectators a great performance and fight for the win.”

FUN TRIVIA:

  • Chelsea have won 100 matches in all UEFA competitions & drawn 49.
  • Chelsea have scored at least 3 goals in their last 3 matches in the Champions League.
  • The Blues have finished as group winners in seven of their last ten campaigns, qualifying for the knockout rounds as runners-up in two of the other years.

IN A NUTSHELL: Although a draw will suffice for qualification to the knock-outs, Chelsea will look to win against the Swiss side, as it will ensure the Blues automatic top spot in Group E, irrespective of Schalke’s result in the other encounter. Basel have a good record on their home-ground in past UEFA seasons with wins against the likes of Manchester United & Bayern Munich. Mourinho is expected to pick a strong squad which will help Chelsea gain 3 valuable points and hence, render the tie on Matchday 6 pointless.

Where are you getting your stats of losing or drawing 90% of games Mata started from?

Chelsea have played 19 matches in all competitions so far, and Mata has started only 8 times. In 8 starts with Mata, we have won 6 times and lost 2 times.

    HULL- Mata didn’t play -W
    MAN u- Mata didn’t play- D
    Bayern- Mata didn’t play-L
    Aston V- Mata starts- W
    Everton- Mata starts- L
    Basel- Mata didn’t start(Sub) – L
    Fulham- Mata didn’t play- W
Spurs- Mata didn’t start (Sub)- D
    Bucharest- Mata starts- W
    Norwich- Mata starts- W
    Cardiff- Mata starts- W
    Schakle- Mata didn’t play- W
    Man C- Mata didn’t play-W
Newcastle- Mata starts- L (After he came off, we lost)
    Schakle- Mata didn’t play- W
West Brom- Mata didn’t play- D
West Ham- Mata didn’t play- W

    Capital One Cup
    Swindon- Mata starts- W
    Arsenal- Mata starts -W

Here you have it- Mata has only started in 8 games that’s about 42% of all Chelsea matches. He won 6 games in 8 starts, that’s a 75% winning ratio. Where r u getting your facts of 90% losses or draws, cos Mata hasn’t even played up to 50% of games for the blues

Chelsea players looked tired and without energy. There are 25 quality players in the squad and yet still the coach keeps playing the same players over and over again. How can you play the 36 year old Lampard two games in a row with two days rest? Why not Mata, Essien, DeBurnye and other fresh legs to start this game and rest those who played on Saturday to be ready with the game with Southampton this coming weekend? Rafael Benitez used this technique and got the best out of everyone.

  5. JM after the match said: due to international break, my players were tired! my Question from JM is: did u come to that conclusion before or after the match!?
JM is the manager in charge and he should have known better.
