Match Report: Arsenal 0-2 Chelsea (Capital One Cup 4th Round)

A brilliant team display ensured that Mourinho’s side heaped misery on Arsenal and proceed into the quarter finals of the capital One Cup. Two Spaniard’s were the men who found the net for the blues! Firstly it was Cesar Azpilicueta capitalizing on a Jenkinson mistake, scoring his first goal for Chelsea. Secondly it was the magical magician Mata who doubled Chelsea’s advantage with a stunning strike.

The blues came out fast off the blocks dominating the majority of possession. Chelsea were comfortable in the early stages and the first real chance of the game fell to Belgian Kevin De Bruyne, who was re-introduced by Mourinho to the starting 11. After receiving the ball he steppoverd to the left, attempting to curl the ball into the far corner. However his shot was easily saved by Fabianski.
Seven minutes later the blues were ahead through the unlikely source of Cesar Azpilicueta. Following an Arsenal corner Chelsea broke away on the counter attack, however it seemed to be over as Essien’s attempted pass was deflected up in the air. Arsenal’s right-back Carl Jenkinson tried to head the ball backwards to Fabinaksi, the ball wasn’t hit with enough power which let the rushing Cesar Azpilicueta to poke the goal home to score his first goal in the blue of Chelsea. 0-1
In the space of four minutes Azpilicueta nearly turned from hero to villan. ‘Dave’ as he’s known by a lot of the Chelsea fans played a slack pass at the edge of his own box which fell nicely to Nacho Monreal. Monreal’s shot was always pulling wide not posing real threat on Schwarzer in the Chelsea goal. A let off their for Mourinho’s men.
Chelsea continued to look comfortable despite Arsenal receiving a fairer share of possession. The half time interval came with the score at 0-1.
Arsenal came out of the second half with their heads held high and came knocking at the Chelsea door. Arsenal were managing to find gaps in the Chelsea defence in this resulted in three chances in quick succession. First fan favourite Santi Cazorla fizzed a shot over from 20 yards. Secondly Welshman Ramsey capitalised on the space available to him, however he could only drag his shot wide if the goal. Thirdly Bendtner found himself an a brilliant position to shoot from 10 yards out, though it appeared he was unaware of the circumstances as he passed the ball back to Ramsey.
Ryo Myiachi was replaced by Mesut Ozil but in a matter of minutes of his inclusion the blues doubled their advantage. Juan Mata received the ball at the edge of the box, he took one touch steady himself and he placed a beautiful shot beyond the reach of the goalkeeper. 0-2.
Arsene Wenger felt the need to bring on Olivier Giroud in an desperate attempt to keep Arsenal’s cup journey alive. The Frenchman almost an instant impact but his near post shot was smartly saved by Schwarzer.
Minutes later Chelsea almost made it 3-0. Ramires who provided the blues with fresh legs darted forward from midfield, he attempted to delicately chip the ball over the head of Fabianski. Frenchman Kosicelny was on hand to deny the Brazilian and provided Arsenal with a glimmer of hope.
With game drawing to a close, Arsenal still couldn’t manage to really threaten Chelsea. Demba Ba and Ju young park came on for each side respectively as the clock was ticking down.
Chelsea had two good chances in the closing stages of injury time. Ramires received the ball at the edge of the box and his well struck effort dipped inches over the bar. A similar scenario came from David Luiz as his fiercely struck shot just went over.
A brilliant result was capped off by a brilliant performance. London is blue! I hope you’ve enjoyed this article and the game. KTBFFH
