First Half

Before kickoff we observed a minute silence as mark of respect to two of European coaches who passes away, Barcelona’s Tito Vilanova and Vujadin Boškov of Sampdoria and the Yugoslavia national side.

Koke’s cross-shot almost caught Mark Schwarzer out in the early exchanges, as Chelsea replied back on set pieces first threat from the home side as Willian bending a free-kick just over the bar after Ramires had been brought down 13 minute in.

Diego Costa got two chances but both were blocked well by Chelsea defenders, first by Cole and then Cahill.

Luiz who showed his acrobatic skills almost beating Courtois but the ball went narrowly wide.

Chelsea went ahead after Willian weaved through two attempted tackles in the right corner and the ball broke for Azpilicueta to cross first time. Azpilicueta found his fellow Spaniard Torres, who slotted the ball under Courtois, albeit via a slight deflection off Mario Suarez. Former Atletico Player Torres refused to celebrate against the club where he made his name

but Atletico was euphoric a minute before half time when Adrian capitalized on some hesitant defending to equalize with a scuffed right-footed effort from Juanfran’s cross.

Second Half

The Spanish side had the bit between its teeth early in the second half and Terry was relieved to see Schwarzer thwart Turan with a fine reflex save following some poor defending from the center back.

Terry was next to go close at the other end, but Thibaut Courtois’ razor-sharp reflexes denied his parent club.

Chelsea desperate to score Mourinho made a change bringing in Eto’o for Cole, but the Cameroon striker gave Atletico upper hand as his first action was in defence when he tripped Diego Costa and Referee Nicola Rizzoli awarded a penalty.

penalty

Costa was booked after taking his time to place the ball and an exchange of views with Ivanovic before drilling his penalty beyond Schwarzer for his eighth goal in eight Champions League matches this term.

here was no letup in the action, and Luiz got on the end of Willian’s inviting free kick with a powerful header which struck the crossbar – Courtois somehow diverting the rebound over.

But any hopes of a Chelsea fightback were ended by Turan, who calmly tucked the ball into an empty net when the ball came back nicely for him after Schwarzer had tipped his powerful header against the bar 18 minutes from time.

Simeone scorched down the touchline in celebration and Chelsea, and Mourinho, had no answer.

Courtois in excellent form stopped Hazard and Eto’o who came close to score for Blues.
