Match Report: Corinthians 1-0 Chelsea

report

Chelsea’s Club World Cup adventure came to a bitter end after the London side lost 1-0 to Corinthians in the final.  A solitary goal from Paolo Guerrero was all that separated the two sides.

First half

The match started in relatively quiet fashion with both teams sitting back and waiting for the other side to make a mistake. The first real chance came to Chelsea from a corner. A scrap in the box allowed Cahill to get a shot away but the ball was stopped by Cassio. It appeared to have crossed the line but goal-line technology was in use for the match and replays showed the call was correct. Corinthians had a couple of chances through Emerson and Paulinho, but couldn’t convert. Guerrero thought he had a penalty when he fell inside the box but it wasn’t given. Chelsea won a free-kick just outside the area but Luiz’s effort hit the wall. Moses had the best chance of the half when he curled a shot around a defender but Cassio made another good save. Lampard had a shot on target but it was straight at Cassio. 0-0 at half-time.

Second half

Chelsea started the second half on the front foot, and Lampard had another shot which was blocked. Mata managed to find Hazard with a through ball but Cassio pulled off another good save. After that, Cotinthians began to grow in confidence, dominating possession and creating chances. A Corinthians goal looked inevitable and it came from Guerrero. A scrap in the box ensured that the Corinthians hitman scored with a tap-in header in front of an empty goal. Benitez brought on Oscar for Moses in search of an equalizer. Chelsea probed patiently and Torres had a chance in the end of the half but couldn’t convert from 3 yards out, hitting the ‘keeper instead. Torres did score a goal in injury time but it was ruled out for offside. That was the last chance created. Chelsea were second best on the night.
