Mourinho is off to a winning start as Chelsea manager, while fellow competitors Manchester United and Manchester City have fallen in their first pre-season game.
From Goal.com:
Romelu Lukaku helped kick off Jose Mourinho’s second spell as Chelsea manager in confident fashion, as the Blues defeated Thailand All-Stars in the first game of their tour of Asia.
The Belgium international marked his return from a season-long loan spell at West Brom with a first half penalty,
Mourinho utilised the entire touring party with two almost entirely different XIs in each half; only the impressive Kevin De Bruyne and Ramires played more than 45 minutes in sweltering conditions in Bangkok.
A steady start saw the Blues control possession and patiently probe the Thailand back five, but it wasn’t until the 18th minute that a genuine chance was created.
De Bruyne’s precise cross from one of many dangerous set-pieces saw Michael Essien’s header across goal get turned onto the crossbar after a communication mix-up between goalkeeper and defender.
To this point Lukaku had struggled to find a rhythm but following a one-on-one conversation with Mourinho during a drinks break, the 20-year-old came alive and immediately threatened the opposition goal.
In the 32nd minute, after dropping deep, he rolled his marker to latch onto a through ball and drew Klanklin into a save with his feet.
Moments later, a short De Bruyne free-kick invited Brazilian debutant Wallace to move into the penalty box, who with half an eye on the defender approaching him, went down under a clumsy challenge.
Lukaku made no mistake from the spot, firmly sidefooting beyond Klanklin to give Mourinho’s team the lead.
The Belgian came close to doubling his tally in the 39th minute as he again arrived onto a precise through ball to control and volley across goal, but Klanklin tipped the low effort behind for a corner.
With the raft of half-time changes, Mourinho introduced new signing Marco van Ginkel amongst others, but the Blues struggled to add to their solitary goal.
Another couple of intelligent set-pieces from De Bruyne yielded the clearest chances, with Demba Ba drilling a low cross just wide of the near post, before Branislav Ivanovic and Ba wrestled with each other to tap home a deep inswinging ball. As it transpired, the Serb’s touch was too tame to beat Klanklin.
Eden Hazard provided moments of inspiration, as he is liable to do and he almost added a second as he bent a strong free-kick through the wall and at goal, but the diminutive but spritely Klanklin kept the shot out.
By full-time Jamal Blackman was only called into action by an audacious 45-yard volley and a far post header that didn’t come close to threatening his goal.
Unlike David Moyes, who saw his Manchester United team lose to the same outfit, Mourinho is off to a winning start in Asia thanks to Lukaku’s spot-kick.
