Match Report: Chelsea 4-1 Wigan

Chelsea laboured to an ultimately convincing win over relegation-threatened Wigan at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, being eased over the line by a trademark Frank Lampard strike to claim the three points and move back ahead of Tottenham into third place. Rafa Benitez’s side won their first game in three outings as they bounced back from defeat at Newcastle to seal all three points. But this was anything but an impressive display from the European champions, as Wigan will feel they could have taken something from their trip to West London.

The opener was brilliant move from Chelsea as David Luiz and Fernando Torres combined to set Ramires up to fire home. Eden Hazard added a second just before the hour, but that was not it as just moments later Shaun Maloney sprung Chelsea’s offside trap before rounding Petr Cech and firing home from an acute angle.

Chelsea put the game beyond Roberto Martinez’ side with two goals in the final few minutes. With four minutes left as Frank Lampard coolly slotted home from the edge of the box with an archetypal clinical finish to continue his own fine run of form. Then German substitute Marko Marin headed home his first goal for the club from close-range after Ali Al-Habsi could only parry the ball out.
