Jose Mourinho addressed the media ahead of tomorrow’s game against Newcastle United, with the Portuguese claiming that Ashley Cole will be offered a new contract with Chelsea. The defender, who has been frozen out by manager Jose Mourinho this season, has been linked with a move to the MLS.
Former Arsenal team-mate Thierry Henry is said to be encouraging Cole to join him at the New York Red Bulls.
But speaking ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Newcastle, Mourinho said:
“He still has a future here and we want to renew his contract – but ask Thierry maybe he has a better idea.”
Mourinho also indicated that the match against Pardew’s side may have come slightly too soon for Fernando Torres. Torres won’t feature against Newcastle but could play a part against West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday.
“He’s almost there, but not there,’ said the Blues boss. ‘We won’t risk him, if it was the last game of the season I would say let’s go and do it. But we have lots of matches to play and it’s not right to risk him now.
If we lose a player now we lose him for a long time, it’s not the moment to lose players, it’s the moment to help them out.
‘Tuesday is a much better possibility. We have a couple of little things, not really injuries, that we need to assess, but in terms of injuries it’s only Nando and Van Ginkel.”
Jose Mourinho also said that Mohamed Salah will be selected for tomorrow’s game.
