Player ratings: Chelsea bow out of the UEFA Champions League with another 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid

Chelsea’s first season under Todd Boehly effectively came to an end as the Blues crashed out of the Champions League with a 2-0 loss to Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge. It was a familiar story, with big missed chances proving costly. A brace from Rodrygo was enough for Madrid to claim a 4-0 win on aggregate, and condemn Frank Lampard to his fourth defeat in a row. 

Kepa Arrizabalaga- 6/10

Nothing the Spaniard could do about either goal. He did make some relatively simple saves to keep Madrid at bay in the first half. His distribution was shaky tonight at times.

Reece James- 6/10

A game of two halves for James. The fullback looked positive in the first half and was given a lot of freedom to attack by Lampard’s tactical setup. He should have had an assist when his cross found Marc Cucurella in the box, with the Spaniard wasting the opportunity. Faded completely out of the game in the second 45.

Wesley Fofana- 6/10

A much-improved performance from last week, dealing well with Vinícius Júnior and keeping him out of the game for the most part. He did, however, commit a lot of unnecessary fouls which helped Madrid keep the game stunted.

Thiago Silva- 7/10

Did very well dealing with Karim Benzema who was practically invisible in the game today. 

Trevoh Chalobah- 3/10

Who knows what was going through Chalobah’s head when he decided to slide into a challenge in Rodrygo as the last man out on the touchline. A terrible defensive decision and ultimately proved costly, killing the tie for Chelsea.

Marc Cucurella- 3/10

Missed a huge chance to pull a goal back in the tie for Chelsea before half time, firing his shot straight at Thibaut Courtois from close range. Some very bizarre pressing in the build-up to Madrid’s first goal left Chalobah in a difficult situation.

Enzo Fernández- 6/10

Helped control the midfield in the first half, switching the play well between both wings. Will probably feel as though he was harshly substituted, and Chelsea completely lost control of the game after he was removed.

N’Golo Kante- 4/10

Two big chances missed by Kante today proved costly for the Blues. His first chance, which was by far the easier of the two, was an open chance inside the Madrid box. Kante snatched at his strike and dragged it wide. His second chance was perhaps unfortunately blocked by the Madrid defence. Other than the chances missed he had a quiet game in midfield.

Mateo Kovačić- 6/10

Played his role in controlling the midfield in the first half well. He completed 81 passes in the game, the most on the pitch. Going forward, however, he contributed very little in a game where Chelsea needed goals.

Connor Gallagher- 4/10

Apart from a well-won header to set up a Kante chance, Gallagher looked completely out of his depth tonight. The Englishman failed to have a significant impact in the build-up of Chelsea’s attack and was removed midway through the second half.

Kai Havertz- 6/10

Cut a very isolated figure up front for Chelsea. He battled well in the moments he was near the ball, winning 3/6 aerial duels and 4/5 ground duels. His isolation at the top of the pitch, however, meant he failed to create any attacking chances.

João Félix-  4/10

There is nothing that sums up João Félix more than a moment in the game today. The Portuguese attacker picked up the ball deep in his own half and set off on a driving run, showing fantastic feet to beat his man. When it came to the final pass, however, he failed to make it, instead playing the ball straight back to Madrid.

Raheem Sterling- 5/10

Barring a few moments, Sterling has struggled to have any impact at Chelsea this season. Today was no different. His introduction mid-way through the second half provided no help in helping Chelsea’s attack.

Mykhailo Mudryk- 6/10

Although I’m sure he’d rather be having an impact at the other end of the pitch, Mudryk must be given credit for a goal-saving challenge he made to deny Vinícius from making it 3-0.

Frank Lampard- 4/10

Lampard’s short Champions League run comes to an end. Whilst question marks were raised over the starting line-up due to its defensive nature, Chelsea did look like the better team in the first half and created chances that should have been tucked away. After the Madrid opening goal, however, Chelsea were awful. Lampard’s substitutions had no impact, and if anything made the Blues look worse. The performance summed up Chelsea’s disastrous season.
