Player ratings: Chelsea continue to suffer from inexperience as lacklustre finishing costs the team YET AGAIN away at Bournemouth

Horrid is the way I’d describe it, and we find ourselves with 1 win from 5 games so far. Impatience is seemingly building already, and as much as I’d like to counteract the frustration by remembering how many injuries we have, I’m struggling to justify what on earth we saw today.

Sanchez stood out for the right reasons, Jackson too but for the wrong ones. Let’s jump in to the player ratings…

Robert Sanchez – 8

Says it all when our goalkeeper was (in my eyes) our best player against Bournemouth doesn’t it? Acrucial save in the first half after we switched off from a quick free-kick, and another good save to deny Solanke late on.

I also thought his distribution was tidy, along with a few high claims in the box. No complaints about Sanchez from me today.

Malo Gusto – 6

Average all in all today from Gusto, not poor but hardly great either. He’s young, he has potential and he will obviously get better – today was just one of those days where he was a little rushed going forward in my eyes. Not that we did much in the second half anyway.

Axel Disasi – 6

Again, not a standout performance but did his job well enough. A few important blocks, and he was neat on the ball which is probably as much as we can ask for from a defender on a day like today.

Thiago Silva – 5

I really don’t want it to appear as though I have some form of agenda against Thiago Silva but today yet again proved that he’s becoming more of a problem than anything else. Too many touches in slowing down our build-up which of course, causes further issues as we try to attack as a team.

A frustrating day, and much of my own frustration was levelled at him on the ball.

Levi Colwill – 6

Arguably Colwill’s quietest day in a Chelsea shirt, through no real fault of his own. It’ll be nice at some point to finally see him play as a left sided centre back in a back 4, but Pochettino doesn’t seem to intend on doing that, so we’ll stop hoping for now. Hard to find many positives, but he certainly wasn’t poor.

Conor Gallagher – 6

A positive start to the game and I actually had Gallagher sat at a 7 rating by half-time, funnily enough. But his quiet second half has pulled him back down a little, and again, whilst he clearly has improved on the player he was last season, he just doesn’t quite do it all for me.

I find Gallagher to be someone great off the bench, adding energy to a game, etc. He feels a little less noticed when starting, but alas, a solid 6 for me.

Lesley Ugochukwu – 7

Now this is a player that I’m a real fan of, and I think his performance went under the radar today. Lesley Ugochukwu was the ‘Caicedo replacement’ for today, if you will, and I think he did a fantastic job in midfield, offering himself as an option in build-up, and his height & physical presence combined with a really tidy technical side to his game makes him an interesting prospect for us, and I hope he continues to get chances this season.

Enzo Fernandez – 6

I don’t just say it for the sake of it, or because I love the player he is, but even on an average day, Enzo just oozes class. Whilst he didn’t ‘stand out’ for me, and you could tell he looked a little leggy from his duties with Argentina, he still was solid enough in a midfield three we’ve not yet seen from the start this season.

No European football should benefit him this week, and I suspect he’ll be back to his usual level against Aston Villa next week.

Raheem Sterling – 6

A weird performance today – successful in 60% of his 5 dribble attempts, but how many opportunities did he have where we were screaming “SHOOT!” and he didn’t? That’ll always be what holds him back when playing for us, but I won’t scold him too much because I thought he was the best of a bunch of many average performances today.

Nicolas Jackson – 5

Worst game in a Chelsea shirt so far, what was that all about? 29 touches (his least in a league game this season according to what I could find) and not much other than his shot that crashed onto the post in the first half.

I risk repeating myself when I say ‘give it time, there’s a player there’ and it applies here yet again as it does to most of our squad. Broja coming back will be some welcome competition.

Mykhailo Mudryk – 6

His performance will probably differ opinions but I think Mudryk can be somewhat content with what he gave us today. Early on in the game, his quick turns of pace to escape his man suggested he had more confidence in his ability than usual, and it was pleasing to see.

Towards the end of the first half though he went a little quiet, and the same continued in the second half. Overall, a ‘decent’ performance from the Ukraine international, and I just hope he gets more opportunities now because there’s clearly a player in there.

Mauricio Pochettino – 6

Hands tied with an outrageous number of injuries, you just have to feel for him. I have not much else to say on Poch today, even his substitutions were somewhat forced due to the lack of options he had on the bench. But 1 win from the opening 5 has caused some pressure even already – we’re an unforgiving fanbase, and I think it’s safe to say we’re already borderline desperate for a run of form.

Cole Palmer – 6

I was glad to see Cole Palmer come on but wasn’t a fan of him coming on for Mudryk. An average cameo, which had me frustrated at his hesitance to shoot with his late chance. Please tell me we haven’t drained the life out of another young talent?
