Ellis Simms scored his first ever Premier League goal in the dying minutes to deny Chelsea three points against Everton at Stamford Bridge. The Blues led twice through João Félix and Kai Havertz, but sloppy defending proved costly. The result leaves Chelsea stuck in 10th place, with hope of qualifying for the Champions League via the Premier League almost out of reach.
Kepa Arrizabalaga- 4/10
On the very rare occasions Kepa was called upon today, he let his side down. The Spaniard could not do much about Abdoulaye Doucouré’s close-range goal, but he definitely could have prevented Simms’ late equaliser. Kepa got a hand to the ball but did not do enough to divert it from finding the back of the net, costing the Blues two points.
Wesley Fofana- 7/10
The highlight of the game perhaps was watching Fofana surge forward with the ball from deep in his own half. On a few occasions, the Frenchman showed off his dribbling skills for the Stamford Bridge crowd. Defensively sound as well, making two tackles, three clearances, and winning five aerial duels.
Kalidou Koulibaly- 4/10
Koulibaly will be having nightmares tonight about how easily he allowed Simms to roll him late in the game in the build-up to Everton’s equaliser. Really poor from the experienced centre-back who had been relatively solid up to that point – bar a terrible pass that handed Everton a chance. He made a few good challenges early in the game, but ultimately the late mistake proved costly.
Benoît Badiashile- 5/10
The young defender struggled at times to defend against Demarai Gray and was beaten too easily on a few occasions. He also gave away a few needless free-kicks in dangerous areas.
Reece James- 7/10
It still feels like Reece James is holding something back – whether that be related to recent injury issues or not is unknown. In the first half, James seemed reluctant to go forward. That did change in the second 45, however, and it had a profound impact on Chelsea’s attack. He did well to win the penalty that looked like it would hand Chelsea the win.
Ben Chilwell- 7/10
Another strong performance from Chilwell. From set pieces, his crossing ability has dramatically improved in recent weeks and he was good again today. He played five accurate crosses, more than anyone on the pitch. His deflected cross also paved the way for Félix to open the scoring.
Enzo Fernández- 7/10
Promising once again from the young Argentinian.Fernández’ passing ability has been on display over the last few performances and it was there to see again today. He attempted 13 long balls, with ten of them finding their target. It was his long pass to Chilwell which opened up Everton’s defence for Chelsea’s first goal.
Mateo Kovačić- 6/10
A big early chance was squandered by the Croatian early on when he flashed a close-range shot wide of the post. From there Kovačić was involved without being influential. He made the most passes on the pitch with 73 and helped out defensively with two successful tackles, before being removed in the 80th minute.
João Félix- 8/10
It was a game of two halves for Félix. In the opening half, he was Chelsea’s most involved player but lacked the end product. He spurred a good opportunity with a misplaced pass and wasted a big chance by shooting straight at Pickford. In the second 45, however, he took his chance. The ball fell to the Portuguese forward who struck it through James Tarkowski, past Pickford, and onto the post and in.
Kai Havertz- 6/10
Fantastically taken penalty by Havertz, who expertly sent Pickford the wrong way. If only he had backed that penalty up with a few headed goals. The German had four good chances to score with his head and fluffed his lines on all of them. For the last two, he inexplicably did not commit to heading the ball when the goal was at his mercy.
Christian Pulisic- 6/10
A rare start for the American who has struggled with fitness issues in recent weeks. Pulisic was involved sporadically in the first half but looked lively when he did manage to get on the ball. Scored a cracking goal from long range that was ruled out due to Félix being offside in the build-up, before being substituted midway through the second half.
Subs
Connor Gallagher- 6/10
A regular substitute for Graham Potter at this point, Gallagher was once again introduced at the 60-minute mark. The midfielder flew into challenges and was all over the pitch, but did not have much impact on the game.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek- N/A
Carney Chukwuemeka- N/A
Trevoh Chalobah- N/A
Graham Potter- 4/10
A disappointing day for Graham Potter, who will feel aggrieved to have been let down by some poor defending in the final moments. Some very defensive substitutions were made which perhaps opens him up to some criticism, but the same changes were made against Leeds last week and paid off. Still, dropped points at home to a poor Everton side is an inexcusable result, and Potter now has an international break to ensure performances like this do not happen again.
