Chelsea FC
Petr Cech: 5.5
Could have done better for the second goal. Barely tested apart from the goals. So the only highlight being 2 goals conceded.
Branislav Ivanovic: 5.5
Had a decent game defensively but he was poor offensively. Like the game against Everton, his crosses were so wasteful, hardly found the targets.
Gary Cahill: 6.5
Made some good and clean tackles then and there. Never really made a mistake apart from the collision with Eto’o for the second Basel goal.
David Luiz: 6.5
Bought the ball from defence and made the pass to Lampard who assisted for the Oscar goal. Defensively, he had a fair game. Not the one to blame for any goals conceded.
Ashley Cole: 5.0
Exploited by Salah several times with his pace and movement. He seemed to have got a grip on Salah for a certain period but it didn’t last long. No improvement from the Everton game defensively or offensively.
Marco Van Ginkel: 5.5
Not played in his preferred advanced defensive midfield role which was played by Frank Lampard. Showed glimpses of his talent at times but couldn’t break the Basel midfield. Not a game to remember.
Frank Lampard: 6.0
Assisted the goal with a fine lay off to Oscar. But apart from that he was poor, lacked that cutting ball to the final third or the box.
Willian: 6.5
Decent debut. Showed his ability whenever he got the ball but it was limited as the Chelsea midfield wasn’t linking up well. Showed pretty good acceleration to go past defenders and showed impressive workrate. Promising display.
Oscar: 7.5
Undoubtedly the best Chelsea player. Scored the only Chelsea goal with a fine finish, came close to adding a second with a sublime shot but hit the crossbar. Worked hard throughout the game.
Eden Hazard: 5.0
One of the poorest games in a Chelsea shirt from him. Tried to go past the defenders but failed almost everytime. Should’ve changed his game after Basel equalised but he didn’t. His link up with the Chelsea midfield was almost close to zero as he tried to do all on his own.
Samuel Eto’o: 6.0
Showed very good movements but lacked that cutting edge in the final third.
Substitutes
Juan Mata: 5.5
Subbed on for Willian. Didn’t improve the midfield as everyone should have thought of but Chelsea were in the panic mode minutes after he came on as Basel equalised.
John Obi Mikel: 6.5
Came on with Chelsea needing a goal. Improved the Chelsea midfield by some margin. I would easily place my bet on him playing the next game.
Demba Ba: 5.5
Couldn’t do much to turnaround the result. Isolated upfront.
FC Basel
Yann Sommer: 6.0
Not really tested apart from the goal. Showed good control aerially though he messed up one time. His anticipation to come off the line quickly for a Samuel Eto’o chance might have saved a goal.
Kay Voser: 7.0
Dealt with Hazard well. Not to mention Eto’o was also playing there for a considerable part of the game. Solid game.
Fabian Schar: 7.0
Minimised threat through the centre. Impressive in the air. Rock solid in the defence.
Behrang Safari: 6.5
His life against Willian was tough but he improved as the game went on. Played the ball to Streller who played it to Salah for Basel’s first goal.
Ivan Ivanov: 6.5
Could have done better for the Oscar goal but nevertheless he had a solid game overall. Also he was good, aerially.
Fabian Frei: 7.5
An unsung hero in the Basel midfield. Provided a very reliable shield for the defence as Chelsea midfield found it very hard to get a ball through to the box.
Valentin Stocker: 6.0
Swapped the wings for Salah for a certain period of time in the first half. He couldn’t give much trouble to Ivanovic.
Marcelo Diaz: 6.5
Assisted the second goal for Basel from a corner. He couldn’t offer much offensively apart from that but did well to help the defence by closing down Chelsea players.
Mohamed Salah: 8.5
Man of the match. Scored the equaliser with a beautiful finish and played a considerable role in the second goal as it was his pass to the Chelsea box which led to the corner which in turn led to the goal. Lively throughout the game as he never gave Ashley Cole a moment to rest.
Giovanni Sio: 5.5
Isolated upfront. Never possessed a threat. He was replaced for Delgado with 25 minutes to play.
Marco Streller: 8.0
Scored the winner and assisted the Basel equaliser with a beautiful long pass to Mohamed Salah. Worked hard throughout the game and got his reward deservingly.
Substitutes
Matias Delgado – 6.5
Huge improvement on Sio. Obviously improved Basel and proved handy in the 25 minutes he played.
Arlind Ajeti – N/A
Not enough time to make an impact.
Taulant Xhaka – N/A
Came on to waste the time as Basel were holding on to their one goal lead.
Man of the Match: Mohamed Salah. A threat throughout the game. Never gave Cole a moment of peace with his pace and movement. Scored the equaliser and played a role in the second goal.
Flop of the Match: Eden Hazard. Chelsea were relying on him hugely to create chances but he has failed on almost all occasions. One of his worst performances in a Chelsea shirt and on par with his performance against Steaua in Romania last year.

Have the Mikel bashers noticed that Mikel has had good ratings and has outplayed even our beloved Lamps in all the game he has started?
That shows that mikel is improving.
who would you play as a defensive mid? mikel or luiz scoring his screemers and running forward to help attacking and win the games like benitez did with him in europa league? i know who i’d choose. mourinho doesnt want to copy benitez at our peril
