Frank Lampard claimed his first win as Chelsea’s interim manager as the Blues secured mathematical safety from relegation in a 3-1 win against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium. Late goals from Benoît Badiashile and João Félix secured victory for Chelsea after Matias Vina had canceled out Connor Gallagher’s opener. Late substitutions from Lampard proved pivotal, with Hakim Ziyech and Raheem Sterling both coming off the bench and grabbing assists and Félix scoring minutes after his introduction.
Kepa Arrizabalaga- 7/10
Nothing Kepa could have done to prevent Bournemouth’s equalising goal, but the Spaniard did well to ensure the Blues never fell behind. Still looks extremely shaky when dealing with aerial balls into the box.
Trevoh Chalobah- 6/10
A solid defensive performance from Chalobah, making two tackles, two interceptions, and three clearances. Did his job well at right back today dealing with Dango Ouattara. Very limited going forward.
Thiago Silva- 4/10
A rare difficult day for Thiago Silva. The Brazilian was dragged out of position far too easily for Bournemouth’s equaliser. He was then very fortunate that a penalty was not awarded to the home side after his sliding challenge seemed to make contact with Dominic Solanke and not the ball.
Benoît Badiashile– 7/10
Another defender who didn’t cover himself in glory for Bournemouth’s equaliser. Badiashile, however, bounced back well. He impressed defensively for the rest of the game, before firing home a vital goal to put Chelsea in front late into the game. The young Frenchman showed once again why he should be in Chelsea’s starting lineup.
Ben Chilwell- 6/10
Another injury for Ben Chilwell. Fortunately, it comes at a point in the season where the absence of the Englishman won’t be disastrous for the Blues. Still, the consistent injuries for Chilwell are a concern with a faltering Marc Cucurella his only potential replacement.
Enzo Fernández- 7/10
A commanding performance in midfield from the Argentinian. Defensively Fernández made nine successful ball recoveries. Going forward he played 11 accurate long balls.
Connor Gallagher- 7/10
A very well-taken headed goal for Gallagher early in the game to put Chelsea in front. He found space in the area and guided the ball into the bottom corner. Was a constant nuisance for Bournemouth in midfield.
N’Golo Kante- 6/10
The Frenchman got himself a rare assist with an early well-placed cross which found the head of Gallagher. He got booked for a silly tackle in the build-up to Bournemouth’s equaliser and after another silly foul, was subbed off to prevent a possible red card.
Mykhailo Mudryk- 5/10
Was booked for diving early in the game, despite seeming to make no appeal for a free kick at all. Some brief flashes of his dribbling ability, but in truth struggled to involve himself in the game before he was subbed off.
Kai Havertz- 4/10
How Kai Havertz managed to head the ball off target after being found by Ziyech six yards out from goal, I have no idea. The German contributed very little going forward throughout the game and even slowed Chelsea’s attacks at times. It didn’t help that his replacement (Félix) scored only two minutes after he was brought on for Havertz.
Noni Madueke- 7/10
Some fantastic dribbling on display again from Madueke, who earned a deserved start after his performance against Arsenal. The young winger looked very promising going forward and was by far Chelsea’s most positive attacker. There is room for improvement with his final product.
Subs
Ruben Loftus-Cheek- 6/10
Kept things ticking along after his introduction. Did his job in midfield well.
Raheem Sterling- 7/10
A fantastic run through Bournemouth’s defence carved the Cherries open, and Sterling then did brilliantly to cut the ball across to find the onrushing Félix who secured victory. One of the best moments we have seen from Sterling since he signed.
César Azpilicueta- 6/10
Perhaps a surprise to see Azpilicueta introduced at left back over Lewis Hall after Chilwell came off injured, but a decision that paid off. The Spaniard did well defensively to ensure the Blues kept Bournemouth’s attack at bay.
Hakim Ziyech- 7/10
Definite question marks were raised when Ziyech, a player who looks destined to leave in the summer, was brought on. The Moroccan, however, proved the doubters wrong. A fantastic assist for Badiashile put the Blues in front. He should have had another assist when he played a perfect ball to Havertz who somehow headed wide.
João Félix- 7/10
The Portuguese attacker was only on the pitch for two minutes, before he brilliantly struck a first-time finish to secure victory for the Blues.
Frank Lampard- 7/10
Every single Chelsea fan will have questioned the substitutions of Frank Lampard – bringing on Azpilcueta, Ziyech, and a misfiring Sterling. Credit where credit is due, however, those players were the difference maker. Lampard finally gets his first win in his second stint as Chelsea manager – can the Blues push on from this to end a terrible season strongly?
