Chelsea were condemned to their sixth defeat in a row as Arsenal rolled over the Blues 3-1 at the Emirates. Martin Ødegaard hit two before Gabriel Jesus put the Gunners 3-0 up at half-time. Noni Madueke pulled one back for Chelsea in the second half, but Frank Lampard’s side were clearly second best on the night.
Kepa Arrizabalaga- 6/10
Perhaps Kepa could have done better for Arsenal’s opening goal. The Spaniard got his fingertips to the ball, but could not divert it away from the net. He did, however, make a number of good saves to prevent his side walking off the pitch in complete embarrassment.
César Azpilicueta- 3/10
A terrible headed back pass in the opening minutes set the tone for what was a night to forget for Azplicueta. He was fortunate to be bailed out by his goalkeeper on the occasion, but things did not improve for the Spaniard. He looked out of his depth dealing with Arsenal’s attack and did not cover himself in glory for any of the goals his side conceded.
Wesley Fofana- 4/10
Not a great day for Wesley Fofana, who struggled to deal with Arsenal’s attack, particularly in the first half. Was part of a number of players who were shambolic defensively for Arsenal’s third goal.
Thiago Silva- 5/10
Another defender who struggled. Did not look like the defensive leader the Blues have relied upon in the past today. He did make one incredible goal-line clearance to stop Chelsea going 4-0 down.
Ben Chilwell- 4/10
Had a good chance to equalise when the scoreline was only 1-0, but his tame shot was well saved. Poor defensively, and on the ball struggled to have any impact going forward.
Enzo Fernández- 5/10
A difficult day in the middle of the park for the Argentine, who was comfortably dominated by Arsenal’s midfield. Could have perhaps done better to block the cross for Arsenal’s opener.
Mateo Kovačić- 5/10
A really poor first half from the Croatian, who looked almost lost in midfield. He was poor with the ball at his feet, and even worse defensively. Did play a very nice cross to Madueke to restore some decency for the Blues.
N’Golo Kante- 3/10
In fairness to Kante, I don’t think he even understood why he was deployed as almost a second striker for Chelsea today. It is undeniable, however, that the Frenchman was poor. Nothing summarised his performance better than when the Blues were counter-attacking with a 4v2 and Kante passed the ball straight to an Arsenal defender.
Noni Madueke- 7/10
The only player on the pitch for Chelsea who showed any desire. It is clear that the youngster is still raw with his final product, but the talent is there. He displayed some fantastic dribbling throughout the game. Got a deserved goal with a nicely timed run, before finishing well to make the scoreline slightly less embarrassing for his side.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang- 2/10
Cut an isolated figure up front, managing only nine touches before he was removed at half-time. When he did get near the ball, however, he looked far out of his depth. It seems quite clear he is not cut out to play at this level anymore.
Raheem Sterling- 1/10
Does Sterling even want to be at the club? It genuinely seems like he is here for a final payday before retiring. He is poor going forward, poor on the ball, and his utterly lazy defending left Ødegaard completely unmarked in the box for Arsenal’s second goal. One of the worst performances we have seen this season, and that is saying a lot.
Subs
Kai Havertz- 5/10
Brought on at the start of the second half, the German was certainly an improvement on Aubameyang. In truth though, he did not have much impact other than a couple of late chances that were easily dealt with.
Mykhailo Mudryk- 6/10
Mudryk is probably wondering why he didn’t start the game, or at least come on earlier. He looked lively when brought on the pitch (even with Arsenal fans shining a laser in his eye the whole time). Surely has to start over Sterling in future.
Connor Gallagher- 5/10
There is no safer bet in world football right now than Connor Gallagher getting a yellow card. In fact, the Englishman’s only impact on the game was committing two fouls in fifteen minutes.
Hakim Ziyech- N/A
Trevoh Chalobah- N/A
Frank Lampard – 2/10
The initial line-up looked an improvement from Brentford, but the way it was deployed showed it clearly was not. Why on earth was Kante Chelsea’s second furthest forward for the majority of the game? Madueke and Sterling playing as defensive wingers was a poor decision as well. The subs made an impact but happened far too late. Six defeats in a row for Frank Lampard now as Chelsea manager…
