Despite being sanctioned by the Uk government and being forced effectively to sell Chelsea Football Club, confirmation has emerged that Roman Abramovich took part in early peace talks between Russia and Ukraine as the war goes on.
In fact, Ukraine’s President even told the US not to sanction Mr Abramovich, one has to wonder, did the UK take action too quickly, was it fair?
David Arakhamia, head of Ukraine President Zelensky’s party: “ I can confirm that Mr Abramovich is heavily involved in peace talks “
( Financial Times )
I don’t want to offer political certainties, but I would be surprised even after Abramovich’s efforts, if Russia just stood down from this war and let Ukraine claim victory, both sides are not the type to stand down and there has been no signs of the war ending so far.
You have to think, even if the war ended, is the sale of Chelsea too far down the line already? Would the Uk government lift the sanctions on Abramovich? And more importantly, is it the right time for Abramovich to sell anyway given he has officially completed every trophy possible by winning the club World Cup this year.
What we do know is that despite some of Abramovich’s actions being questionable over the years, ( most notably sending tens of millions to a controversial isreali settler group in 2020 that displaced Palestinians ) Abramovich has done good and he isn’t all “ Evil “ he let NHS staff stay in the Chelsea hotels for FREE during the pandemic, and Chelsea were one of the only clubs to not furlough staff in the pandemic, this action towards peace talks is just another sign that perhaps he isn’t as closely tied to Putin as many claimed.
