Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Samuel Eto’o on a one-year deal.
Jose Mourinho hinted that Chelsea had given up on their pursuit of Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney after two rejected bids and has now turned to ‘Plan B’.
Mourinho and the Cameroon striker are to be reunited after working together at Inter Milan, with Chelsea and Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala having agreed a deal.
The 32-year-old leaves Anzhi almost exactly two years after arriving in Russia in a move that shocked the footballing world, with the Dagestan-based club reportedly making Eto’o the best-paid player in the game.
He joins a number of other high-profile departures, including new Chelsea team-mate Willian, from Anzhi after owner Suleiman Kerimov decided to dramatically cut the club’s budget.
The Cameroon forward had two goals in six games in the fledgling Russian Premier League season.
Eto’o has appeared at three FIFA World Cup™ tournaments, in 1998, 2002 and 2010 – scoring three times.
