Sorry but I’m not a fangirl

Fernando Torres
Let’s not be sexist in football. Everybody has an opinion which according to their point of view, is valid. Whenever I post a tweet or make a comment about Torres in which I praise him, everybody simply call me a “fangirl”. And that’s not only me, most of the girls receive the very same comment. Let’s say I’m praising Marin, Mikel, Luiz,… am I still a fangirl ? No.
Thought I should stand out for that one day, and here I am. This is exactly my opinion about the whole Torres saga explained. After reading this, you should decide whether I’m a fangirl or simply someone who has a different opinion/point of view than yours.
For me, I won’t be partying around town if Torres leaves. Actually I don’t mind him staying, but if we can use him in a deal to get Cavani or whoever then the club definitely comes first.
Torres’ Chelsea career hasn’t been easy, actually in comparison to his time at Atletico Madrid or Liverpool, it has been a disaster. We paid something like £50 million to sign him and the expectations at that time were sky-high.
Here’s a comparison of his time at Liverpool and Chelsea (Premier league only):

These stats were extracted from NBC sports' website.
These stats were extracted from NBC sports’ website.

Even just looking at these stats makes me sad. The day we signed him I was on a different planet, shame it didn’t work.
We’ve missed out on Falcao, a move for Lewandowski seems unlikely and Cavani’s release clause is just too much of a risk. Who’s left then ? Mario Gomez, Jovetic and Higuain (Arsenal-bound if the rumors are to be believed).
Torres after all hasn’t had a bad season this time, 23 goals for a striker in such a critical condition isn’t actually that bad after all. He hasn’t scored a lot in the premier league but still, he’s kind of won us the Europa League with his goals.
And to be fair, both Demba Ba and Torres suffered from bad service that made them a bit short on goals. Specially Ba whos’s scored some important goals but failed to produce his Newcastle form which made us sign him. This should all be solved by Mourinho so no worries really.
Is he really back ?
HE’S BACK! Oh no, he’s gone. HE’S BACK! Oh no, he’s gone…
Again, Torres has had his best campaign in three seasons this term scoring 23 goals. We bought him from Liverpool for a huge sum of money, he was expected to fire right away but actually that didn’t happen. The pressure on him was huge, not only because of the transfer sum but also he was bought in January so he needed time to adapt to our style of play. Let alone the injuries and the way he was rushed back for the WC.
He is improving. His positioning, off the ball work and assists have been impressive.
Even when he talks. He’s gone from this: “I had team-mates who didn’t care if the team won or lost because they were not playing. I never wanted to be like that. One day I discovered that I was like them, that it didn’t matter it we won or lost if I was not playing. I wasn’t part of the group. I discovered that I was not happy because I had stopped being what I had always wanted to be. In the dressing room, you can never lose that group concept.”
to this: “I am happy for this season, happy to be at Chelsea winning trophies, that is what I wanted when I came [here] and I feel more important than in the past. So I only can think that the future is going to be even better.”.
He’s more positive, feels important and part of the team. This psychological boost has made him end the season on a high. He hasn’t definitely reached his full potential but I think he should be given a chance under Mourinho. It might just work. Mourinho is a special manager, he’s at his best when it comes to boosting the players’ confidence. He might be able to help him, and if it didn’t work then we can sell him in summer or as early as January. One more season for him wouldn’t be a bad idea, everybody’s excited about working with Mourinho. The quality will be there forever, he just needs that boost.

Let’s talk business
If we’re thinking about selling Torres then the club should accept a huge loss as his fee will definitely be less than £50 million. Also, Torres is a huge commercial figure for the club as I read somewhere that around 18.7% of our shirt sales belong to him.
So if we’re talking business, this will be a loss for the club.

Shirt sales for Torres outsold those of Andy Carroll, his replacement at Anfield, by a massive 250-1 in the 24 hours following the transfer window deadline (Goal.com)

As this business talk might not interest everybody, but this is the reality. Football, for the board, isn’t just a sport, it’s a business. Our owner is a businessman, and the board will definitely take that into consideration.
– When we bought Torres, he was in Drobga’s shadow after being Liverpool’s golden boy. When Drobga left, he’s had HUGE boots to fill. He adapted and started the season fairly well, and ended it pretty well too. The decline that started in December wasn’t only about him, it was about the team as a whole.
ZORRES!
What was all that about ? All the Chelsea fans were like “Who are you and what did you do to our Torres?”. The phenomenal Zorres who showed glimpses of Nando’s old form. Suddenly, Torres became a super sub (Man City), we were all getting mad when he’s not in the starting XI and crying for Rafa to bring him on.
Who was that ?
Actually that was the Torres that we all know, the beast. Was it all about the mask ? Definitely not. Torres has shown a lot of signs of improvement and started to actually look like a football player.
Even if you don’t agree with me, I believe that Torres became much more of a squad player. When he’s not scoring, he’s assisting goals and creating chances. We can’t also deny that Torres scored when it mattered the most this season ( Middlesbrough, Benfica and Everton)
In the end I want to say that Torres deserves a final chance for what he’s done this season. A confidence boost, which I’m sure Mourinho is the right man to do it, will massively help him. He will only get better. And again, if that didn’t happen, Mourinho will throw him on the bench and he will get sold sooner than later.
This is my opinion about the whole story and I hope I won’t be called a fangirl again as I genuinely don’t think that Torres is even good looking.

I completely agree with what you’ve said in the above article, i think torres does deserve a chance to prove his critics wrong. He definitely has the skill and ability in him to torment any defense on his day, but what i think he lacks is the motivation and true grit that he showed in his days at atletico and liverpool. Form is temporary but class is permanent….

He’s shown a lot of determination and motivation in the last couple of months this season, since his nose injury to be precise. And he’s doing the same now with Spain. The class and talent will forever be there, he just needs someone to boost his confidence and this is what Mourinho’s best at.
We’ve given him lots of chances when he didn’t deserve them. Now he does.

      • You’re FIT Malak Hassouna! — thank for defending me, even when i’m not scoring goals for chelsea
And thank you for calling me ugly when i’m arguably the most hottest and best looking footballer on the planet & every girl would die for me but i have already got married and i got 2 daughters

I dont see the name of the writer.. but well written. Its a good article as it is not showing support to the club or theplayer.. just being practical.. it’s nice.. However I do believe Torrea is a completely different player than what he was at Liverpool. . He is a more complete player now. Compare his assists with his Liverpool days and his work rate.. u will see the difference.

    • Malak Hassouna

      It’s me haha!
Well Torres is now more of a squad player, when he’s not scoring he’s assisting goals and creating chances. I just think he deserves a chance now, and if it doesn’t work then like I said, sell him in summer or as early as January.

  3. Think Mourinho,think Torres.
We have a manager who will in my confident opinion, turn even this current squad into winners. It’s all about the motivation and mentality Mourinho brings. Ad that winning mentality to Torres and you’ll have an explosive player. I’m confident about that. People need to think about the players Liverpool had and the players Chelsea had back then. Got it figured out? We had individualistic players and the system never suited him to be quite honest. Mistake by Chelsea.
22 goals in an extremely inconsistant season speaks volumes. Now use the little heading in my comment to figure out what next season could mean for the player and Chelsea. Mourinho=winning mentality=consistency=Torres possible 30+ goals. We’ll have to wait and see if he stays.
So yes I agree,El Zorro deserves another season.

    • Malak Hassouna

The managerial instability caused that individualistic play. That’s why I agree with all what you’ve said. He deserves another chance and Mourinho will make it work.
The talent is there, the quality is there, he’s just missing that confidence boost and winning mentality.

  4. San Marine

first of all you’re a girl who follows football, and you have enough respect for that !! women in my country are allergic to it !! and even the article is well written, approach, statistics everything. cheers !!

    • Malak Hassouna

Here in my country also women aren’t really into football, but I love it and play it at times. Thank you so much though, appreciate it! 😀

  5. kenechi K

Malak u can be my fan and far better looking than Torres. hahaha. truth be said the data show all. El “Zorro/Zorres” is heating up, his header against my country “Nigeria” was a killer. i think time will tell us where he will be now or later. Zane, I always read your contributory comments, always on-point. KTBFFH! ChelseaFc all the way.

    • Thank you Kenechi K.

    • Malak Hassouna

I think as I said before that he should be given a chance. We gave him lots of chances when he didn’t deserve them, now he does.
      Thank you! 😀

  6. First buy one striker!!! Bring bak Lukaku. Loan out Ba, den tink of giving Nando dat chance while I do like Nando, he s had his chances. We shuld look for a plan “B” wit plan “B”

    • Malak Hassouna

Lukaku is back at least for the pre- season, he confirmed it himself. We’ll get a striker so it’s not an issue really.

  7. i think he should be given a chance on bench PERIOD

    • Malak Hassouna

It’s up to jose to measure that.

      • meekson hundoo

Truly agree with you malak…. but i think it would be difficult for jose to keep fernando on the bench if he continues performing as he’s currently doing at the confederations cup…
