Ten Things to Expect this summer at Stamford Bridge: 2014 Edition

Chelsea sw6In about January of 2013, I wrote an article on this website about what I personally and other Chelsea fans expected to see that following summer at Stamford Bridge. And of the top 10 things I listed, almost all of them were possible except the arrivals of Cavani or Falcao that I predicted. Most of all, we have witnessed the return of Jose Mourinho to Stamford Bridge and that is a great thing to see from those that were listed in that article I wrote.

Now, I would like to make another list of top 10 list of what we expect to take place at Stamford Bridge this summer following a promising season in which we are in a run to win the league title of the clutches of Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool who are all behind with few points to spare behind us. You can let me know on which ones you agree or don’t agree through comments and all opinions are welcome from you guys..Enjoy the ride.

1. Players to be sold in order to make way for Star signings:

Etoo-Torres-BaJust like Jose Mourinho did this past January transfer window, the club will more than likely sale under performing players like Fernando Torres and Demba Ba. The two strikers did not feature more for Mourinho than did new summer arrival Samuel Eto’o. The Cameroonian as a result have netted in many important games like the hat trick against Manchester United and a winner against Liverpool. With Jose’s comments of how we would witness the arrival of a new top center forward in the summer, it might be time to say good bye to Fernando Torres and Demba Ba whose total of goals in the premier league can’t even much that of our on-loan striker at Everton, Romelu Lukaku.

2. NEW ARRIVALS; Specially that of a striker:

Radamel-FALCAONew arrivals would have to come in if surplus to requirement players are to leave the club. And we expect big name signing especially that of a striker to fill in the void left by Torres, Ba and also Samuel Eto’o if he departs. Jose Mourinho has made it clear in quotes that he would sign a forward that can assuredly lead the line at the Bridge for the ‘next 10 years’. And other signings expected will be at the Left back position where Ashley Cole is likely not to extend his contract after being frozen out by Azpilicueta who is naturally a RB.

3. Ashley Cole to leave?

ashley-coleAs mentioned above, the veteran English Left back is on a verge of missing out on the world cup even though Jose Mourinho insists that he should be picked since the Chelsea star helped the three lions qualify for the tournament in Brazil. Cole might be lined of an MLS future or maybe a move to other European leagues if he is not offered a contract or simply decides to end the hoodoo of Jose’s selection head ache for an established star like him.

4. Luke Shaw to sign for a record sum for a full back to replace Cole:

Whether Cole leaves or stays won’t likely depend on the signing of Luke Shaw who is strongly targeted by not only Chelsea but, Manchester United and City as well. The 18 year old is a well known Chelsea fan and has performed incredibly well at Southampton for two years now in the premier league. With the youngster already competing for a place in the world cup squad with Cole, it won’t be a surprise to see him at Stamford Bridge this summer.

5. John Terry to get a contract extension of not only one but TWO years:

Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Chelsea v Queens Park Rangers - Stamford Bridgeur captain has been a solid rock at the heart of Mourinho’s defense which has been key so far in the Blues surge in the title race. Terry has insisted a lot of times to the media that he can’t see himself representing any other team but, the team he made himself at after graduating from the academy. He is in a good position even to win the PFA player of the year award at the age of 33 if Chelsea end up winning the premier league trophy. If so then, why only offer him a one year contract when he certainly deserves to end his career at Chelsea despite being a starter or not? We will see what happens by May, but JT is surely to stay for another and hopefully the remaining years of his career at Stamford bridge.

6. And so does Frank Lampard:

Frank_Lampard_2564620b-330x206Another veteran of the Blues and already a legend, Frank Lampard will more than likely sign a new contract extension for another year at Chelsea. No one expected for him and John Terry to feature under Mourinho like they are this season but, only the Special one knows the value of their experience unlike our previous interim manager from a year ago. It is likely that Super Frank will extend his stay at the Bridge as he is set to feature in a world cup at the age of 35 and he has been a reliant member of Jose Mourinho’s line-up this season.

7. Thibaut Courtois to finally stay at the Bridge and battle with Cech for the No. 1 spot:

Thibaut-Courtois

The Belgian goal keeper has been more than impressive in his performances for Atletico Madrid who are in tight battle at the top of La Liga against Real Madrid and Barcelona. Despite rumors that the player has asked for assurances that he will be a starter at the club in order to stay, Mourinho has insured he will return at the bridge and contend for the starting place with Petr Cech in all competitions. We might likely see a shuffling of opportunities for both keepers like it’s happening at Real Madrid between Diego Lopez and Iker Casillas.

8. Romelu Lukaku to be in plans of Mourinho’s squad too:

Lukaku_1772394aAnother Belgian who has impressed on-loan is Romelu Lukaku. The powerful forward has scored in many appearances for Everton in the premier league and Jose Mourinho might finally give a chance to prove his worth in a top club. The striker wants Champions league football starting next year and he may get that if he remains humble and stop giving silly interviews about chances like he did earlier this season. It is likely that he will be a back for who ever is the starting striker at the bridge next year.

9. Costa, Falcao, Cavani or Ballotelli?

jose-mourinho
DECISIONS, DECISIONS BY Mourinho on who to sign this summer…..Falcao, Cavani, Costa or Ballotelli???

Jose Mourinho would have to make some big choices for a center forward signing that he would have to make this summer. He has flirted with the option of bringing Falcao to the bridge as he said last week that center forward doesn’t have ‘a team’ while he has no striker to fire in goals. When it comes to Diego Costa, rumors have claimed that a verbal agreement has been reached for a 32m pound transfer in June. And Ballotelli might be looking for an option to go to a trophy winning team as Milan despite his goal services are struggling to make into a European stage qualification. Edinson Cavani is another target who is looking to leave his club as a result of being played out of position and struggling to command a starting main center forward role that Jose can offer him at Stamford Bridge.

10. The return of the KING? Didier Drogba to return as player & future striking coach role:

Jose and drogbaAs it has been strongly rumored in the past weeks before Chelsea game against Galatasaray in the Champions league, Didier Drogba might return to the club as a player this summer. But, the main desire of this move from Mourinho is that he wants to make Didier Drogba a strike coach at the club once he completes his coaching badges while playing at the club. The special one has cited how the Ivorian’s determination is an example for any Chelsea youngster to see and it’s no surprise at seeing the Chelsea legend don the Blues shirt of Chelsea once more in the twilight of his career.

Here are the 10 things I predict for this summer to happen and you guys can comment on this and let me know if there are more things missing from it or if you disagree. We will wait and see once the season is over with a resounding success for Jose Mourinho’s team hopefully.

  1. I don’t think drogba will come back because drogba himself was saying that he can play for more years and he’s not thinking about coaching

  3. Honestly, I really don’t think Lampard will get a contract extension, that too of two years.

Plus, there is no way Drogba is returning as player or in any role. In a few years’ time, when he retires, he might be back as a member of coaching staff.

Eto’o and Ba will leave, I believe. Torres I am not so sure. He could be our third choice striker behind “the new signing” and Lukaku.

    • Ankit Torres Nirwan

he wouldn’t play as substitute striker…he has to be the teams spearhead !

  4. What about #10 clinician players that our team lacks? Z team hs to go for this position as this make z team can’t win a single game convienentely. This position is z main area to correct. Cole is still a better LB in EPL but lack of #10 clinician that create good goal scoring opportunity & unable to kill game timely expose Cole and other blue players’ weakness and not to get chance to play. If we fulfill FFP rule, it is good to buy Falcao, best #10 & Shaw. If not Costa and best #10 player is a must and cover LB either extending Cole contrat or bring lone players or giving role to other players who perform better.

What do u mean by #10? Hazard, schurrle, willian, oscar, salah, lampard, mikel can play as #10. Why wasting money on ‘best #10’ just pls

      • Anonymous

We dont need any #10 we have a lot of creative midfielders that can do and change games anytime when needed they can create lot of chances but what really lack is striker the finisher, we need a good and complete striker to just do the job to pull the ball into back of the net…..

  5. @ fik why #10?Though oscar has underperformd in that position, but i dont see a better #10 like hazard out their.i advice jose to try mikel at dat position.he does it 4 nigeria & we saw what he is realy capable of during the confedration cup.great write-up,i lov @ fik why #10?Though oscar has underperformd in that position, but i dont see a better #10 like hazard out their.i advice jose to try mikel at dat position.he does it 4 nigeria & we saw what he is realy capable of during the confedration cup.great write-up,i lov @ fik why #10?Though oscar has underperformd in that position, but i dont see a better #10 like hazard out their.i advice jose to try mikel at dat position.he does it 4 nigeria & we saw what he is realy capable of during the confedration cup.great write-up,i lov @ fik why #10?Though oscar has underperformd in that position, but i dont see a better #10 like hazard out their.i advice jose to try mikel at dat position.he does it 4 nigeria & we saw what he is realy capable of during the confedration cup.great write-up,i lov dat!!!

  7. Toni kross is a good option

  8. @cfc obsessed annd @ zyte help me ask @ Fik why #10. He has been saying it since hat we need a. #10. Just because oscar has dip in form, he is no longer good. Cfc fans are never satisfied. When oscar was scoring almost every match at the beginning of the season no one tot we need a new #10.

  9. ————————–Cavani—————————-

    Eto.— ( contract finishes)
Ba— ( not good enough for us)
Mikel–( not good enough for us, for a Defensive Mid he can’t tackle, pass or header ther ball. All he does is pass backwards and sideways.

    • hassassin

Good. But try adding PVan Aanholt into our fullbacks section…and I think you almost forgot a player in Marco van ginkel… Also I’d like to see chalobah or ake or kalas or omeruo at cb and it hurts to see luiz at cb… He’s a b-to-b cdm…hope Christensen or baker or Rubin loftus cheek becomes regular…

    • Bye Cavani and Gundogan rather get Costa and promote one of our youth players preferably Romeu or McEachran

  10. @ miles, dont mind fik.they easily forget that all players hav their highs & lows.#10 is not needed.we must find a way 2 develop our talents.am getting bored wit buyn so many players, though i agree we need a good striker, but not one that wil cost 50mill.we bought drog around 22mil & yet he servd us 4 8 trophy laden years, yet shev that costed us a whooping 30mil failed 2 deliver.

  11. Like other teams we don’t hv best chance creater players in our team. Look Arsenal, City, Everton and other big clubs they create best chance to their strikers. In our team as Osc, William play in #10 role, a few chances created to our strikers. Blue can’t create a single chance particularly while we play with more physical teams. Oscar is out of z game at that time. Why cfc can’t win team that Arsenal easily we even though we hv better Winges, defenders & strikers than Arsenal? Z reason is cfc has not best chance creater players like Ozil, Wilshier, … We lack such type of players that defender and midfield players not communicated with attackers so we can’t score goal by our attackers. We only depend on defenders to score goal during corna kick.

    • Cfc_obsessed

Like the defender score an hattrick in our last match. Why re u thinking like this fik? U mention ozil and overrated wilshere, are they good creator than hazard? I dont tink so honestly. I knw u want to bring mata talk into this but just stop, we dont ve problem in dat department. Do i want ozil in my team? No. Hazard is better, do i want wilshere in my team? No. He is injury prone, overrated, matic, ramires lampard, mikel is better cos they re reliable in a long run. All we need is a clinical striker. 3,4 chances is enough in a game if u ve a clinical striker

  12. James Mwas

Cavani i don’t think so MOU’ ruled that out already ..

  13. Cfc shud sell ramires nd mikel…dey ar nt gud enof to b a cfc dm player..dey hav underperformed dis season

    • Cfc_obsessed

Selling ramires? That should be a second thought in the heart of any cfc fans. I admit he s playing badly right now but guy, i knw wot he s capable of. He s a beast on a gud day. I ll never sanction the move. Cfc engine? Our utility player? No

  14. Dey shud use d money realized frm d sale of mikel nd ramires to buy toni kroos

    • U want sale Ramires? May I ask you why? Yes he is up and down but remember he is a game changer. Kind of the guy who can change the game at anytime. Honestly I don’t know why none want El Niño out. Believe me I can’t wait to see Fernando Torres out of Chelsea. He got his time and I think Mou will not allowed him to stay as he don’t believe in mediocrity. I just want Ba, Eto’o and Torres out. We need new strikers badly

  15. @ Donvic are u realy a cfc fan? rami & mikel is not the problem of cfc,but toothles strikers.go & check torres goal ratio at cfc, then u wil be ashamd that he is our point man.if i am to hav a say in whom 2 sel at cfc, then i wil suggest torres, but who wil buy him?ba & eto.ktbffh.

  16. Martin, Norway.

Am not sure of Drogbas return. I think there is a likelihood of selling Ba and Etoo but Torres am not sure he will be sold. Ofcourse lets purchase Costa, young and affordable. Lampard needs to move on so that other young midfielders can emerge, once a Legend always a Legend. That will be great to our talented keeper competite with Cech next season. Good article and well written like all the time.

  17. Big name signing of strikers have really helped us lately. I think chelsea should call on loan striker lukaku to spear head our attack come, the lad has not really being given a chance. Lukaku will surely outscore our strikers in league this season,in the persons of Eto,Torres and Ba. Up blues.

  18. To me Lukaku has to stay to Everton to get more playing time & to be complete competent with z strikers in Cfc. Being z 3rd or 4th choice striker and getting playing time is very difficult. As mour play next season for trophy there wl be big striker signings and competing with that is difficult to Lukaku. He has to benefit from Loan as he is young. Courtis wl come and compete with legend Cech for no 1. I don’t expect a contrart extention to old legends as they want more playing time [not want bench]and hving high salary than other players …
