What We Learned: Chelsea vs Sporting Lisbon

Our 2nd match in the UCL group stage ended as an way 1-0 win but to be fair, many Chelsea fans would agree that the score line is a mere understatement.

What We Learned:
1
) Not killing the game-Concern?
2) Attack was flawless
3) Schurrle still World Cup struck?
4) Costa really injured?

Not killing the game-Concern?

The focal point of the match would be the way we attacked yesterday. Both Chelsea and Lisbon shared a total 15 shots, with Chelsea’s 7 on target and Lisbon’s only 3 on target. We won 12 corners compared to their 2. We basically had everything needed to strike the opponents and build up a big lead, but that was the concern, we didn’t. As early as 2 minutes, Costa was on 1v1 with the keeper only for Patricio to make an amazing save. Then, next minute, another attack, Schurrle’s shot blocked over and then over and over again. It can be described as Patricio’s best night in his career our worst attack prowess (but hopefully that’s not a concern)

2) Attack was flawless

While some might argue we didn’t take our chances at all and ruined it, I would say we were unstoppable tonight. All of our through balls, all of our winning tackles and starting counter attack, everything went flawlessly. The only problem was the finishing but I expect to see Jose telling his players to work on their accuracies tomorrow. Honestly, I want you guys to comment on who you think needs improvement on their attack.

Jose had this to say for the way we played yesterday:

3) Schurrle still World Cup struck?

Schurrle

Honestly, what other excuses do you think others would put up to defend him? Just like how he played against Bolton, he played like that tonight, and yes I mean not taking the chances. In just under 10 min, we could have been 3-0 up but only the problem Schurrle couldn’t finish it. He practically missed a sitter after Hazard had started an amazing counter attack, it was 3v2, Hazard pulls the ball back for Schurrle and then he missed the open goal by a yard. Jose stated that post World Cup players (i.e. the ones who made it to round of 16 and further) need time to settle to club football before they are back to their old forms. Well, that’s what I pray for Schurrle, to get his form back and fast.

4) Costa really injured?

Call it mind games, fake news; screw us up in fp….Coughs…nothing. Costa scores whenever he wants even if its an hamstring injury for him. Jose stated that Costa is not fully fit but will be playing against Lisbon and so he kept his promise. But the fact that fans were expecting him to play 60 min or less surprises me that how Jose made him play for the full 90 min. Maybe he is not injured or maybe he is who knows? As long as he is scoring, that’s what makes us happy and I hope he starts against Arsenal next week on a Super Sunday.

This is what happened to a player who tried to end Costa’s career literally:

On a seperate note, congrats to John Terry on making his 100th appearance in the UCL. Only 7th british player to do it.
