What We Learned From The Juventus Match : 20.11.2012 |
A poor night for Roberto Di Matteo and The Blues saw Chelsea fall 3-0 to Juventus in Turin. The match result alters our Champions League destiny and makes qualifying for the knockout stages much harder.
Scorers :
Quagliarella (38′)
Vidal (61′)
Giovinco (91′)
What We Learned :
1. Di Matteo could be on his way out.
2. John Terry is priceless.
3. Chelsea are too predictable.
4. The False 9 is not for Chelsea.
5. David Luiz must go.
1. Di Matteo could be on his way out: Roberto Di Matteo has been heavily criticized in recent weeks and after todays result, it will only pick up. A draw or win against Shakthar when the Italians travel to Ukraine on the final matchday would now confirm Chelsea’s elimination. Di Matteo has collected 2 points out of the last 4 Premier League matches. Certainly, a statistic no team wants to see. Roberto Di Matteo admitted to a bust up after the WBA match and has since (reportedly) lost the faith of Fernando Torres. This is very similar to Felipe Luiz Scolari and Andre Villas Boas’ tenures. To prevent a sacking, Di Matteo must turn the results around and qualify for the knockout stages. Failure to do that might lead Roman to the decision to sack RDM.
2. John Terry is priceless: With John Terry, Chelsea’s defense looks hard to beat. Without John Terry, Chelsea’s defense look easy to beat. That’s the difference. As David Luiz continues to be a walking disaster and the lack of defensive leadership, our defense is in ruts. Roberto Di Matteo has been dealt a severe blow with Terry’s suspensions and injuries this season and for him to turn it around, the defensive system has to turn around.
3. Chelsea are too predictable: The 4-2-3-1 system has been played constantly by Di Matteo throughout this season and it’s not working for us, as teams are starting to hold our midfield up therefore holding any offensive production up and making the job harder for Chelsea’s defense. Di Matteo has abandoned the idea of changing tactics and formation for matches and he continues to send the same formation out with different players. Roberto Di Matteo must take the 4-2-3-1 system and use it for the bigger occasions with the most proven squad.
4. The False 9 is not for Chelsea: The False 9 system (which Chelsea played v Juventus) has obviously failed, miserably. The system is one that is designed for passing teams and teams that dominate possession, Chelsea don’t do that on the road and rarely do it in general. Di Matteo must take this False 9 system and throw it out the window and revert back to The Bus or a new system instead of changing squads in important matches. Di Matteo faces dilemma with the squad and his tactics, the False 9 is certainly one that doesn’t work for him and Chelsea.
5. David Luiz must go: David Luiz, I love his personality and he’s a funny guy, but he’s troubling Chelsea’s defense and he is making life without Terry, very tough. Here’s what Goal.com said about Luiz’s performance against Juventus : “His usual confident self on the ball but his positioning once again left something to be desired and his general demeanour was not of someone who fully appreciated the seriousness of the situation.”
Other Points :
1. Where is Marko Marin?!
2. January can’t come any sooner.
3. Di Matteo must beat Manchester City to reassure his position (for now).
