What We Learned From The Swansea City Match : 3.11.2012

It finished 1-1 between Chelsea Football Club and Swansea City after 94 minutes of play in South Wales. It was a relatively boring match with few chances created and only 2 taken.

Scorers :
Victor Moses (61′)
Pablo Hernandez (88′)

What We Learned :
1. Without Mata, we struggle.
2. Without Terry, we struggle.
3. Gary Cahill is better than David Luiz.
4. Cesar Azpilicueta and Oriol Romeu are not yet ready to be starters.
5. Fernando Torres’ inconsistency continues.
6. Victor Moses continues to impress.

1. Without Mata, we struggle : Juan Mata was rested v Swansea and it was only the second time this season that Juan Mata had been rested (QPR away), that match we drew 0-0 and following that match came Mata’s stunning form. (Keep that in mind). With Oscar, Hazard and Moses the “trio” v Swansea, we lacked something in shape, size and form of Mata. We couldn’t just surge forward and create opportunities which were limited in this match. We must find an alternative to Mata’s creativity if we chose to rest him, because without him, we aren’t the same team (for bad reasons).

2. Without Terry, we struggle : It’s John Terry’s last game due to suspension and it is a blessing to have him back. Terry is a crucial part of our defense and trying to work without him is very, very hard. His physical presence in the box (ours and theirs) is something you can’t replace and his leadership is out of this world. We’ve conceded 10 goals in our last 4 games and with Terry we had the best defense in the league. Gary Cahill and David Luiz and Ivanovic just can’t seem to do what Terry does.

3. Gary Cahill is better than David Luiz : For me, Cahill is our new Terry. He is composed, calm, relaxed and makes quick decisions that don’t cost us. David Luiz is a very talented player and his personality is one of a kind and you just can’t hate him. However, Luiz’s recent performances have been poor and even though he was injured and not available v Swansea, Cahill still stole the spotlight in defense. His performances compared to Luiz this season have made it clear that he is our #2 center back. Here’s what Goal.com said about Cahill v Swansea :
“Covered well for Ivanovic on one occasion when Michu looked as if he might run through on goal. With Luiz injured and Terry suspended, he led the defence effectively and was a danger at set-pieces.”

4. Cesar Azpilicueta and Oriol Romeu are not yet ready to be starters : Dave and Oriol were very poor v Manchester United in the league cup and were a tad bit better v Swansea. Azpi is a bit closer to being a starter when compared to Romeu, but both are still not able to be relied on in their positions. Azpi didn’t show his dynamic attacking ways, but did defend well. However, he was caught out on a few occasions. Romeu was just very lazy v Swansea, he sat back and didn’t add support to the Chelsea attack where his passes could be used to pick out the runs of Torres or Hazard. This is a start to their beginnings as Chelsea players and playing them in League Cup fixtures and other PL games (v smaller clubs) will prove their chances for the XI.

5. Fernando Torres’ inconsistency continues : After a poor match v United last weekend, another poor performance came from El Nino and many fans have lost their patience with Torres, including me. Yes, I can’t take it any longer, Torres has proven to me that he doesn’t love this club and that this club isn’t for him. Nevertheless, Torres was terrible against Swansea, passed poor, shot poor, crossed poor, everything from Torres was poor and its frustrating to see that. Ashley Williams kept Torres in his pocket and as quiet as ever.

6. Victor Moses continues to impress : Our new signing from Wigan was fantastic v United (League Cup) and great v Swansea. He, like Oscar, ran forward and held the ball well and was there in our moment of the match when he scored to put us up 1-0. His speed and creativity is definitely a treat and he runs at defenders so calmly and easily that they have a tough time bringing him down and taking the ball away from him. Well played, Victor.

Other Points :
1. When will we see Marko Marin?
2. Romeu-Mikel is too defensive.
3. We’re still in the title race.

Thanks,
Ervin

Moses also provided cover for Dave while he was on. Don't know why RDM removed Dave's cover and then brought cover for Cole. Incredible stats; Mata scores on debut, Oscar grabs double on Champions league debut, Hazard and Marin scores in friendly debut, Mose scores in first League Cup and Premier league start, Sturidge scores in his first start as a striker, Torres???? One thing is for sure, the league is going to be won by a team with very good strikers. Respect to Sir Alex Fergusen.

  7. Dear Ervin, it is the first time I agree with a member of this website. 100% agree. Thanks a lot for this message.

For RDM, it was a shame to replace Moses by sturridge and Di Matteo is so arrogant to leave Torres on the pitch until for 90mn: any short from him, any concrete action from him. Torres is so disgusting!

We need a world class striker someone who will come in and start banging the goals in, not some kid with potential who will need time to settle down and get the hang of It we just dont have that KIND of TIME. IN SHORT WE NEED FALCAO!!

    SHAME ON TORRES!

Anyway RDM job is at risk here. If we lose the game v Shaktar, it is over for him. Play MOSES as a striker instead of Torres is the better choice. RDM will be clever to understand that? I REALLY DONT THINK SO. This guy is so arrogant to continue to play TORRES in front. If chelsea lose this game he will be sacked no matter what at the end of the season. period!

  9. WHAT is going WRONG??

    Chelsea Manager Di Matteo-
Di Matteo is a great manager no doubt given the success he has achieved in the club in short span but what i find lacking in him is lack of taking risks. We have a great bunch of talented players but our bench is not tested yet. Di Matteo according to me, doesnt rotates the player well. Swansea match i guess was played poorly due to drain of energy from excess play from many of our players like Cahill, Mata, Cech, Luiz, Moses, Oscar, Hazard, Sturridge, Azpilicueta, Mikel, Ramires and Romeu. Playing back to back high intensity match against a top side like Manchester United and then in span of two days play again…you will tend to perform poorly because we have all the players in the squad who are aged around 20 to 24 and these players cant handle so many matches. We have untested Marko Marin in bench. Some 1 or 2 reserve players can be given a chance for one of such matches(Malouda is wasting his time in reserve team). We have faced lot of suspensions, bans and injury problems and due to that some players are overplayed which is resulting in lacklustre performance. Di Matteo need to re-energize the team against Shakhtar and need to extract a win from the team.

With Pep lurking, RDM decides to play with his chances. The good thing is that he knows losing would never have giving him the job. Same goes for Torres and Falcao and at the end, one would surely go. For those who say Torres torments the opposition defence, think again. Defending against a player has never being easier. We are making the opposition defence look good.

Torres is class but inconsistency is something that we can't afford if we're strapped for goals. Maybe we can play a “false” nine with all the attacking midfielders we have but I'd rather play Studge or Moses up front if Torres isn't getting the job done

False 9 is a system used when the best finisher is a midfielder. Its uncommon to see extremely good midfield finishers compared to good strikers. It will be easier for us to just get a striker. But if you insist, we have Mata and Oscar.

So the Torres deal was a scam by Liverpool. A player who had been destroyed by injury was sold at his original value. It is not fair, we have to be compensated.

Chelsea fans, let us keep watching with patience as this season runs on with its suprises. One of it is RDM will be sacked and more heads of the playing staff to roll at the end of the season. Mark my word.
