After Torres’ goal in Europa League final, some of you probably started to think about keeping him in our squad for next season. But personally I think he should be in our transfer list this summer. I’ll give you my reasons why he doesn’t deserve to be a Blue next season :
1. Lack of goals
We don’t need to argue about this £50m striker capacity in front of the goals. He is horrible. From 42 games he started (only PL, EL, and CL games) he scored 17 goals. That means 0.4 goals per game, and it’s not good enough for a top club like Chelsea. His positioning, his finishing touch are awful. And from the stats Frank Lampard had best ratio of minutes per goal among all players in Premier League. Shame to know that Torres is our striker
When I say this, some people replied that Torres was there to link up. We have 5 players on midfield to link up, all we need is up front player who can score for fun. We have the service needed by a striker, and we need a striker with scoring ability, a striker who can convert all the services we have.
2. Wages
El Nino is currently paid about £175k per week. That’s second highest in Chelsea, after Eden Hazard (£185k per week) along side with Terry (£175k per week). It’s too high for bench player if we get another decent striker in this summer. Waste
3. Age
He is now 29 years old. For some of you who think he’ll get better next season, he has no future at Chelsea. He had his day, no one can deny he was once a phobia for any defender on this planet. He was Ballon d’Or finalist. But know, he’s just average Fernando Torres.
If we can sell him now, personally i think we can get about £15-25m from his fee. Some top italian clubs are rumoured wanting this spanish striker at heir clubs. AS Roma, Napoli, Inter Milan, and even his old team, Atletico Madrid are linked with him. If we keep him for one or two more seasons, with his remaining contract, we will lose big amounts of money, or even get nothing because he’s a free agent in 2 more seasons.
The only reason to keep him in our squad is because he sells shirt. But now we have Hazard and Mata, who both sold more shirts than Torres around the world.
Better options are available to us :
Demba Ba
He’s not been amazing with Chelsea. But he serves more purpose and threat than Torres. Better positioning, better finishing touch, better effort. And he has been just here for half season, need more adaptation with Chelsea style (different with Torres who has been two and half seasons here), we should give him more time as he was great for Newcastle United. Also he is paid far less than Torres (£80k per week)
Romelu Lukaku
This belgian talent is one of the best talents in this planet now. He had great days on his loan at WBA. Scored more goals than Torres in the league, and he’s not even first s quad there. Was a nominee of PFA Young Player o The Season award along with Bale, Hazard, and Benteke. He won WBA’s PoTY as well. What an amazing achievement for 20 years old. Though I think he needs more experience before playing in Chelsea blue kits, but as alternative option, he can give us at least 20 goals a season.
It’s not even a shocking anymore if Chelsea are linked to many top strikers for this transfer window. Falcao, Cavani, Lewandowski, Mario Gomez, Jackson Martinez, and many others have been rumoured wanted by Chelsea. Since Benitez said that Roman Abramovich set about £100m for this transfer window, it’s not impossible if we want to sign one or two of those decent strikers.
Without decent striker, Chelsea are the second team to score most goals this season (after Barcelona). Imagine what can we do with decent striker in our squad. We have incredible midfielders like Mata and Hazard, all we need is a decent striker to finish the ball from midfield, a striker who scores for fun, a striker who knows how to net the ball.
You can support him or any other players for your life, but when it comes to the team, team go first. Team are priority, and Chelsea are better team without Fernando Torres. -Crissandy

Nice article. Unfortunately we are realising this late. Torres is no longer a starter. The spanish manager realised this early enough and utilised him efficiently. Its such a shame we sold Sturridge when we were analysing the movements. But people said he could score but I knew the more space you can create for yourself, the better you chances of scoring more.

Completely disagree with you.. this article sounds like it was written two yrs ago.. and even then I wld not agree to it.. Team comes first and Torres is a team player (whether u like it or not). For me when a person says that a striker is only supposes to score goals and nothing else, that person knows nothing about team work.. Torres hardwork and movement across the pitch is what helps our midfield get space and score goals.. and pls Demba Ba is not better than Torres by any stretch of imaginationn. Although I do believe Ba needs to be given more time.. There were so many occasions this seson when our midfield was just not rrady to provide the killer ball and would rather pass it to other midfielders or score themselves.. Our overall team play is much better and fluid when Torres is playing.. So there is NO Reason to sell Torres.

Torres is coming into his own. He is not the Striker from Liverdrool. But he has adapted his game for Chelsea. He is Chelsea’s leading scorer this year. He has been less selfish and more of a team player. I say if we sell him now we are losing out on him hitting his true second wind after he know knows how to adjust to Chelsea’s style. This team will only get better the more they play together.

The goal in the europa league final was a world class goal and proves that he can come handy in big occasions with his experience and ability to win a game on his own. As far as his age is concerned, he is 29, he is a top athlete and he could easily carry on for next 6 years or so as there are heaps of players playing at the age of 35+.

Okay I’ll just make my argument. Torres must stay and I have my reasons.
If you look at this mixed season we all witnessed,you would have noticed different phases. In the beginning we were flying but I believe that was only because of morale after winning the UCL and FA Cup last season and the new players wanting to show what they can do which is individualism. We were never going to continue that in a transitional season.
Then we hit a slump. Some say it all started when Clattenburg wronged us at the Bridge against United but I disagree. The team lacked character to put that behind them and it’s a clear indication that chemistry was missing (transition). November and December was more like a haunting time for the squad with losses and draws being more than wins and during that time,I was always complaining that the striker barely gets the ball. I can remember when building an attack,the ball would end up mostly at the right back who had no other choice but to just cross in hopeful balls or pass back.
Then after this time came the up and down phase from January to mid March. We started seeing more cohesiveness but still struggled to stay consistant. By this time Torres hardly played league games because he had to spearhead the team in Europe and partially in the FA Cup.
The last couple of months looked much better. I can safely say I started to see a team playing football. The striker (Ba and Torres) had more chances during this period. Torres obviously took his chances by building up his tally of 22 goals. The team played good football only because character and chemistry started to show.
When Torres came to Chelsea,we played a different style of football. Back then,it was a huge error to buy him. Now he fits the current style. Chelsea made another error in January by buying Ba. He clearly does not fit this style. He would have been better off in the previous style which Torres was just thrown in and told to adapt.
Chemistry is clearly much better now and the players are going to rest and recharge their batteries. Now the board,manager,director or whoever will now try to complete this side in the coming transfer window. The core has been built already for the past 2 or 3 seasons with players like Luiz,Cahill,Mata,Hazard,Oscar and maybe Ramires. Torres is part of the core and by discarding him this coming transfer window would leave us with a confused striker in Ba and a new striker who has to adapt. Football isn’t just about fielding a strong team and expecting positive results. It goes much deeper than that.
Remember what Drogba said in his last interview for ChelseaTV? Torres is the future. I know now what he meant by that. If Torres does leave in this window,we’ll have to wait and see how the team performs.

Torres started looked dangerous again and his work rate off the ball always been excellent even without scoring he makes the team stronger. As much as I agree with this read I beg to differ. I understand he’s been way too bleak but as fans we have to side with our players more often, especially Torres. Look at where things are now, No show for half a season to 23 goals the previous season. I think things are on the up and up. I definitely think there’s more to come and I also strongly feel he can reach his former Liverpool glory , the threat he once was to defenders and goalkeepers alike.
I’m a Torres fan, but as i’ve been saying since last season “get rid of him”. He has shown more poise and better decisions, and seems to be trying to get his stock up. After the recent games i’ve seen him in, i’m undecided as far as selling him. We will see on Monday if he is truly “back to his old form” (or close) as he claims. If he shows more decisiveness with the ball and stays away from trying to be CR7 (as it seemed to me) then he can go do that somewhere else. If he stays true to his game then i’d rather see Ba leave then him. Ba has a different game, and since we got him it’s shown. not sure he can improve much under Mou’s management.
