I’m going to select 4 of our most promising youth talents (in my opinion) and say whether they should go on loan or stay at Chelsea and compete for first team football. Without a doubt, Chelsea has some amazing and incredible young talent at it’s disposal and when you really think about it, we have too much talent that can’t get into the squad.
Here are my 4 most promising talents (no particular order) :
- Thibaut Courtois
- Romelu Lukaku
- Josh McEachran
- Kevin de Bruyne
Let’s talk about whether or not they should be starting/competing or loaned out.
Thibaut Courtois :
Courtois has just won the Copa del Rey with Atletico Madrid, the third trophy that the club have collected during his two year loan spell. As the 2012-13 season comes to a close, Courtois has set a new La Liga record for the most clean sheets in a season, with 20 shutouts.
His remarkable form has led to speculation that he could return to Stamford Bridge a year earlier than expected in order to challenge Petr Cech for the number one spot. Whether this would be beneficial to his development remains to be seen, but he will certainly present Chelsea’s new manager with a pleasant headache if he is recalled.
We can all agree that Courtois is a great goalkeeper and that he could walk into most sides and play between the sticks. However, we have another great goalkeeper at our disposal and that’s Petr Cech.
Cech has been Chelsea’s number one goalkeeper since his arrival in 2004. He was brought in to act as Carlo Cudicini’s understudy, before an injury to the Italian saw Cech promoted to first choice. His full debut came in a 1-0 win over Manchester United, leading him to keep his place on the teamsheet.
Despite spending four months of the 2006-07 season sidelined after an horrific head injury, Cech still holds the record for the fewest appearances needed to reach 100 clean sheets, reaching that milestone after just 180 games. Having won the Premier League, League Cup, FA Cup, Community Shield, Champions League and Europa League during his nine years in West London, Cech is looking forward to a new period of success, with the younger players at the forefront of that movement.
That being said, I think Courtois could easily start at Chelsea next season and I’m sure Jose Mourinho is very impressed with the young Belgian especially after his performance against Real Madrid in the Copa Del Rey final where Courtois made 3 or 4 remarkable saves that most goalkeepers would struggle to make. However, I think Cech has another year or two left in him and we should loan Courtois back out for 1 more season then allow him to be the starting goalkeeper come 2014/15 season.
Next up is Romelu Lukaku :
Lukaku, 20, plundered 17 Premier League goals after he was lent to West Brom last season as his heroics for West Brom surely will earn him a crack at regular first team football with his parent club. He capped his impressive season on loan at West Brom (from Chelsea) with a hat-trick against Manchester United in what was probably his last appearance for the Baggies.
SunSport revealed the Blues have already snubbed a number of approaches — including from West Ham and Swansea — to take the powerhouse hitman on loan next term. Also, it’s said that Jose Mourinho is very interested in playing Romelu Lukaku next season and will reject any loan bids for the Belgian striker. However, Lukaku has expressed his interest in a loan to Borussia Dortmund.
I think that Lukaku has proved himself and that another loan would do him no good. With that in mind, keeping him is very important as he can be a key asset in achieving our high hopes for next season. I would suggest starting Torres and Lukaku together next season in a 4-2-2-2 formation.
Josh McEachran :
McEachran was an integral part of Middlesbrough’s first team when fit, and has said himself that he is hoping to fit in Chelsea’s first team plans in the near future.
Clearly Chelsea have an abundance of talented players throughout their squad, but given Lampard’s contract being extended, McEachran might be wondering if he was going for be considered for a senior role. McEachran is keen on establishing himself in Chelsea’s first team.
McEachran was asked about his loan move to Middlesbrough and he called it :
‘This has been the biggest step forward in my career’
He also talked about how he’s developed :
“The Championship is a lot more physical than the Premier League and, although I still have to get into the opposing penalty area and create chances, I’ve had to improve the defensive side of my game, especially as I’m usually playing as one of two central midfielders in a 4-4-2 formation.”
He will now likely head out on loan again next season, McEachran who is 20, will probably be content to do so in the hope of adding more weight to his claim for a senior place at Chelsea.
Kevin de Bruyne :
Werder coach Schaaf switched De Bruyne to his typical position in central midfield, given the freedom to break forward and join the attack as the most advanced midfielder. This was a far more conversant role for De Bruyne – similar to the one he had been deployed in at Racing Genk – and he immediately looked more comfortable, bursting forward to provide both incisive through balls and an additional goal-scoring threat, something which became apparent in just his second game for the club with his first goal in German football. His ability to prompt quick attacks on the break became handy for facilitating Werder Bremen’s counter-attacking game, as was his accurate long passing.
There is a remarkable thrill to watching De Bruyne play – there is this sense of urgency when he receives the ball, as if his brain is wired to incessantly attack. There is a speed to what he does: his passes are quick, his decision making is rapid – even just the way he dribbles and moves the ball forward is done with pace.
KdB has been linked with Borussia Dortmund on several occasions, this season.
When asked about being linked to Dortmund, he said :
“It suits me,” De Bruyne said of the attacking style of BVB.
However, he’s made it no secret that he would rather stay at Chelsea :
“If Chelsea says that I have a chance to play regularly, I of course would prefer London.”
His future remains unclear, but I’m not too sure he can fit into the squad considering Oscar, Mata, Hazard, etc. are all attacking midfielders available to us. I’d prefer him to get one more year of development and loan him out then bring him back in 14/15 and start to include him in the first team.
What do you think? Who should stay and who should go?

Courtois: I think he should go back out on loan to atletico madrid, let him get as much experience as possibel. Cech will do for atleast 1 more year, and I think he deserves the respect to be out 1st goal keeper as long as he’ll be capabel.
for the rest of them, let them come back, I’m sure mourinho would find a use for them
on my own opinion, I think Josh should be given the chance to play and prove himself till January and if he doesn’t key into the midfield, he should however be loaned out.
Could you guys make a article on every Chelsea loanee that we sent out this season and let us know how their season was. That would be very interesting to read
I think kelvin and lukaku can fight for a place in the team, curtiuos should continue to improve at athletic and josh i think is not of the standard we tend to portray him to be, better we sell him instead of wasting his time. I would like to also say that of the three amigos Oscar has not really impress me. Am of the opinion that dy bryno and the Marco van G guy we want to sign on can push him out of the first Team with a little twick in the formation, Cause these players r natural one touch players, Thanks.
Who’s Kelvin? And Josh is actually of our standard or he wouldn’t of been signed on when he was 8, when Ancelotti was around Josh was an understudy of Lampard, all he needs to do is bulk up a bit
